The school bell rang, and the office workers who had spent the entire day in class were eager to pack their bags and leave. Lin Xiao, however, had no plans to leave just yet; she intended to finish the homework assigned by the teacher before heading out.
Li Hao noticed Lin Xiao deeply engrossed in her work, showing no signs of leaving. He waited until everyone else had left, wanting to surprise her, and quietly took a seat beside her.
When Lin Xiao looked up, thinking her desk mate had dropped something, she was surprised to find it was him. Li Hao was taken aback by Lin Xiao's appearance; she had lost so much weight.
Lin Xiao didn’t expect to see Li Hao and stared blankly for thirty seconds before realizing who he was. Pretending not to notice him, she continued writing in her notebook.
“Don’t you recognize me?” Li Hao thought, surprised by Lin Xiao's reaction. Blaming himself for not paying attention to her lately, he reached out and gently touched her hair.
The pent-up anger and resentment within her overwhelmed her rationality. Suddenly, she stood up and with all her strength, slapped Li Hao across the face.
The sound of the slap echoed in the empty classroom. After delivering the blow, Lin Xiao felt an exhilarating sense of relief; she had been wronged, and this slap was what he deserved.
Then, Lin Xiao began to shove her books and stationery into her bag haphazardly. Li Hao, still stunned by the unexpected slap, grabbed her wrist. “Lin Xiao, have you lost your mind?”
Clearly not enough madness had taken hold of her. Lin Xiao raised her other hand, which he hadn’t caught, and swung it at him again.
This time, Li Hao didn’t let her succeed; he caught her swinging wrist. He held both of her wrists at her sides and simply stared at her.
Lin Xiao glared back defiantly, filled with hatred. “Do you even know what you’re doing?” Li Hao asked, shocked by the fury on her face.
“Shouldn’t that be my question for you?” Lin Xiao replied. After two attempts to strike him with all her might, she felt drained; sweat broke out on her back as dizziness washed over her. “Let go of me.”
Noticing the sweat on Lin Xiao’s forehead and the pallor of her face, Li Hao released her hands. “What’s wrong with you?”
Lin Xiao pulled a piece of candy from her pocket, unwrapped it, and popped it into her mouth. Her appetite had been poor lately; she often suffered from low blood sugar and always carried candy with her.
After a moment, she regained some composure. The anger from earlier subsided; after all, they had shared years of feelings together. Even in dire situations, Bai Xue remained kind-hearted enough to sacrifice herself for someone else's dreams.
"Snow White, I truly wish you all the best. Let's consider that slap evened out. Please, don't come looking for me again; let's pretend we never knew each other." Lin Xiao said, shouldering his backpack and preparing to leave.
"How do you know?" Li Hao's throat felt dry, as if a lie had been exposed. He reached out to grab Lin Xiao's hand.
"Li Hao, don't make me look down on you." Lin Xiao glanced at him holding her hand and shook it off.
"Lin Xiao, let me explain." Li Hao called after her as she turned to run.
"Don't follow me!" Lin Xiao shouted before sprinting out of the classroom.
Li Hao watched Lin Xiao's emotional retreat and hesitated to chase after her. Instead, he pulled out his phone and called Meng Kai. "Did you tell Lin Xiao about Bai Zong?"
Meng Kai was startled by the question. "Secretary, I didn't... I—"
Before Meng Kai could explain further, Li Hao interrupted him. "How did Lin Xiao know that Snow White came?"
Li Hao ruled out Meng Kai as the source of information; it must have been Lao.
"Snow White asked me what your girlfriend's name is; that's all I know." Lao always answered Snow White's questions without hesitation. He understood how painful it was for Li Hao after the breakup, having seen him drown his sorrows countless nights.
Lao genuinely hoped that Li Hao and Snow White could reconcile.
