Li Hao opened his phone and checked the WeChat messages from Bai Xue. Soon, a flood of images came through, showing Bai Xue lying in a hospital bed, sitting in a wheelchair, and even one of her with a shaved head.
He called her back. "Come to the second floor; I'll wait for you there."
In the small reception room on the second floor, they sat side by side. Bai Xue recounted her experiences abroad. It was Li Hao's third year at work, just after he had taken office as the Organization Minister of Gulou District. During Bai Xue's third year of graduate studies abroad, she called Li Hao to break up with him, sending along a photo of herself kissing a foreign man.
That year, Bai Xue was diagnosed with a rare type of bone cancer. She knew that if she told Li Hao, he would face a difficult choice: to continue pursuing his budding career or to go abroad to be with her. The chances of survival for her illness were slim. Bai Xue understood that Li Hao's ideal was to use what he had learned to serve the public—a belief he had held since childhood.
Back then, she had accompanied Li Hao to conduct practical research in Yurou County. He had pointed at those dilapidated homes and vowed that he would help them escape poverty one day. She didn't want her illness to hinder his dreams; besides, it was uncertain whether she would survive. She also didn’t want him to see her in such a pitiful state. If possible, she would rather he remember her at her most beautiful.
She knew that someone as proud as Li Hao would never tolerate betrayal, which was why she had made such a decision.
"Why didn’t you tell me?" Li Hao finally found his voice after a long pause.
"I asked you if you could come see me," Bai Xue replied with a sad smile. "You said your passports were confiscated and you couldn’t travel abroad freely."
Li Hao remembered that moment; it wasn’t long after that she had suggested breaking up. "How is your health now?"
"I'm doing well," she replied. "The foreign man in those photos is my doctor. He connected me with a research institution where I participated as a clinical trial subject for their new drug. I just completed the first six-month evaluation before the Spring Festival, and they said I’m basically cured." Bai Xue smiled happily, just like she used to—carefree and bright.
Li Hao's mind was now in disarray; he had once hated her so much. But now, his thoughts were filled with beautiful memories of her. He remembered the first day she arrived at university as a freshman; he spotted her immediately from the bustling crowd.
It was right after National Day, and the afternoon sun was shining brightly as he read in the library when she approached him playfully and asked, "Senior, how about I be your girlfriend?"
When Li Hao looked up and saw her, Bai Xue was bathed in dappled sunlight filtering through the trees, her charming smile landing softly on his heart. Without any hesitation, he replied affirmatively. Bai Xue turned around and ran out joyfully, telling her classmates that he had agreed to date her.
Li Hao, known for his cold and handsome demeanor, was unexpectedly captured by a freshman girl. He admired her sincerity and bravery, along with her proud and self-assured attitude.
If his feelings for Lin Xiao were built over time, then his affection for Bai Xue was love at first sight.
"Bai Xue, can we still be together?" She stood up, walked in front of him, crouched down, and took Li Hao's hand, looking at him with tear-filled eyes.
" Bai Xue, I have a girlfriend now. She's really..." Li Hao pushed her hand away.
"I know, Li Hao. You've been with her for two years. But we’ve only been together for a year; does that mean our time together is worth less than your two years?"
Bai Xue was familiar with all of Li Hao's friends from school and had even called his buddy before coming here.
"Bai Xue, you should go back and rest," Li Hao said, feeling flustered inside. He escorted her to the elevator before walking away himself.
Li Hao felt as if he were on the verge of splitting apart.
