He would never forget how he had appeared just in time and spoken up for her in front of everyone. Xu felt a lingering guilt towards Lin Xiao; for a long time, he often thought that if he had been braver back then, perhaps Lin Xiao would not have ended up in Yurou County. Ultimately, he had not let go of everything; it was merely a lack of courage to confront reality.
However, now he had a wife and children, and seeing Lin Xiao doing well brought him some peace of mind. They had never been in love, yet they had shared their youthful days together. Those innocent and beautiful memories would always serve as a kind foundation for their journey ahead.
Lin Xiao entered her room and lay on the bed, feeling an unprecedented sense of relaxation. Ji Quan You had finally been caught, and saying goodbye to Xu felt like closure.
At ten o'clock that night, Lin Xiao texted Li Hao to ask if he was home. There was no reply. After finishing her shower, she noticed three missed calls on her phone and hurriedly called back.
"What were you doing just now?" Li Hao's tone was somewhat displeased.
"I was taking a shower. You just got here too," Lin Xiao thought to herself, still irritated by his reluctance to answer calls.
"Come in," she said cheerfully, her spirits soaring; they hadn't seen each other in a month, and she missed him a bit.
Although they communicated daily, it was mostly just casual inquiries about each other's day. When Li Hao opened the door for Lin Xiao, he pulled her into an embrace, having missed her after such a long time.
"Can I kiss you?" Li Hao asked, not wanting to get slapped.
Lin Xiao smiled and leaned in to give him a quick peck before saying no. Li Hao wasn’t foolish; he understood what she meant and continued to hold her close for another kiss. The minty taste of toothpaste lingered in his mouth, refreshing and cool.
Worried that she might not remember to breathe, Li Hao kept kissing her one after another, shifting positions as they went.
"I’ve watched tutorials; I know how to breathe now," Lin Xiao said breathlessly.
Li Hao chuckled at her words and replied that only practice could lead to true knowledge. He pulled her into his arms again for another kiss, and before they knew it, they found themselves on the bed, lost in each other’s embrace.
Lin Xiao found herself pressed beneath him, and he merely kissed her, not daring to make any unnecessary movements. She could clearly feel the evidence of Li Hao's desire against her.
"Why don't we give it a try? I know what the problem is," Lin Xiao said shyly, wrapping her arms around his neck and whispering in his ear.
Li Hao felt an unusual excitement as her breath brushed against his ear. Did she know just how sensitive that spot was?
"Have you been watching something? What the hell?" Li Hao chuckled, finding her adorably cute.
"No, I've been seeing a psychologist," Lin Xiao replied, feeling a bit embarrassed by his laughter.
Li Hao sat up at this revelation. "When did you start? Why didn't you tell me? I could have gone with you."
"You don't have the time. It's once a week, and I've been three times already." Lin Xiao felt indifferent about it; he hardly had time for himself, let alone to accompany her.
Li Hao had chosen Lin Xiao initially because of her independence and self-sufficiency. Now, seeing her like this made him feel somewhat defeated. At that moment, he realized he wanted more from her; he wanted her to rely on him.
"Do you really want to try?" Lin Xiao nudged him playfully.
"I'll go with you after your next session. I don’t want to hurt you right now," Li Hao said, losing interest in his earlier thoughts.
Lin Xiao sighed in relief; not trying was probably for the best. However, she liked being held by Li Hao while sleeping. When he wasn't around, she even found herself missing his warm and broad embrace, which gave her a sense of security.
She nestled into him for a while, finding the most comfortable position as she adjusted Li Hao's arms around her. Holding his hand, she began to drift off to sleep when she remembered Wu Juan's words.
Lin Xiao wanted to share the good news with Li Hao: that scoundrel had been taken down.
"Yes, the law is relentless," Li Hao gently patted her back.
Breathing in the familiar scent of him, Lin Xiao felt at peace and fell asleep.
Li Hao, however, was wide awake. He couldn't overlook what Ji Quan You had done to Lin Xiao; still, Ji Quan You deserved everything that was coming to him.
He knew Lin Xiao would inevitably learn about Ji Quan You's situation upon arriving in Gulou District and worried about how it might affect her emotions. He hurried over as soon as he finished his tasks at hand.
With thoughts swirling in his mind, he felt Lin Xiao snuggled closely against him again, reigniting the fire within him. Watching her sleep peacefully made him feel helpless; she still seemed oblivious to the complexities of relationships between men and women.
