Because they lived nearby, Lin Xiao only got up at seven o'clock. When she came out, Li Hao was already in the living room having breakfast.
Seeing Lin Xiao awake, Li Hao poured her a glass of milk, took two slices of toast, spread a bit of jam on them, and pushed the plate toward Lin Xiao. "Is this what you eat in the morning?" Lin Xiao asked, looking at the cold breakfast.
"It's simple this way," Li Hao replied lazily, dressed in his home clothes, looking completely different from his usual suit.
"You really know how to keep things easy," Lin Xiao muttered. Spending time together had subtly changed her perspective.
"If you want something else, you can make it yourself," Li Hao said with a smile, noticing Lin Xiao's disdain for the breakfast. "But there’s nothing else to eat at home."
Lin Xiao turned to open the fridge, which was nearly empty—just some beer, drinks, and water.
After finishing her breakfast and preparing to go to school, she asked, "What time do you have today?"
"I have a meeting tomorrow afternoon," Li Hao replied. He had come back for the weekend because of a meeting on Monday.
Lin Xiao felt a mix of emotions—happy that he was still around but also unsure about what to do in the evening.
"What time do you finish school? I'll pick you up," Li Hao offered, noticing that she hadn't eaten much for breakfast and thinking about calling the housekeeper to come over and cook.
"I won’t be back for lunch; it's too short. I’ll just eat at school. I’ll come over myself in the evening," Lin Xiao explained. She had stood up Li Hao last night and had plans to have lunch with two friends today.
After discussing their plans, Lin Xiao went off to class.
At noon, the siblings were having lunch in the cafeteria. Lin Xiao ordered extra for her sister, feeling a bit uncomfortable from overeating herself.
After finishing their meal, Lin Xiao mysteriously handed her sister a card.
"Did you get the money?" Lin Xiao asked excitedly.
Feigning calmness, her sister nodded.
"How much?" Lin Xiao couldn't help but raise her voice.
Her sister held up two fingers.
"One hundred thousand?" Lin Xiao jumped up in excitement and playfully nudged her sister. "You’re impressive!"
"One hundred ten thousand, plus my scholarship of ten thousand," her sister added proudly.
"Really?!" Lin Xiao felt overwhelmed with joy; hard work truly pays off.
"Sis, let’s go shopping! I want to buy you a necklace. Look at how you don’t have any accessories!" Lin Xiao had planned to take her sister shopping yesterday.
"I still have class this afternoon," Lin Xiao refused, not needing those accessories.
"It's fine, just have a classmate mark you present. Skipping one class won't hurt," Lin Xiao encouraged.
Not wanting to dampen his enthusiasm and feeling too happy herself, Lin Xiao thought that life should be enjoyed to the fullest, so she decided to skip class.
Lin Xiao took Lin Xiao to a luxury shopping mall, Kid Plaza. It was her first time visiting such a place.
Although her colleagues had invited her before, she always made excuses to decline, knowing she couldn't afford anything and not wanting to waste time.
As soon as she saw the prices, she grabbed Lin Xiao's arm. "It's too expensive! I don't want it."
"Lin Xiao, I know what you're thinking. You've given so much for your family over the years. Let me give you a valuable gift, okay?"
Lin Xiao, cornered by Lin Xiao, pleaded earnestly. "Every late night I spend coding is supported by this belief."
Lin Xiao had a female classmate whose father was a government official. She specifically asked her about it, and the girl said that all the girls in her parents' workplace liked these things.
When Lin Xiao heard her brother call her name, she knew he was upset. Taking a deep breath, she decided to choose for herself.
"I'm happy," she said. "Then you should pick what you like; don't go for the cheap stuff."
Lin Xiao playfully flicked his forehead and said, "Got it."
