I was almost in the city. Li Hao wondered how it had come to this, with Lin Xiao causing a scene at the police station. He was more than willing to help her out, regardless of whether she was his girlfriend or not; after all, she had been a competent secretary for two years. 0

When Li Hao arrived at Yunquan Police Station, he saw Lin Xiao anxiously pacing back and forth at the entrance, constantly glancing towards the street. As soon as Lin Xiao spotted a black sedan pulling into the station, she hurried over. The bright headlights blinded her to the license plate, and it wasn't until she reached the car that she realized it was Li Hao. 0

For a moment, she felt flustered but quickly composed herself. Why was Li Hao here? Had Zheng Jie informed him? 0

As Li Hao got out of the car, a middle-aged man in police uniform walked out of the station's office building to greet him. The middle-aged police officer began explaining Lin Xiao's situation to Li Hao, while Lin Xiao silently followed along. The officer's recounting of the events was accurate, but the way he handled it was entirely different. 0

"That internet café owner is quite a piece of work. We should educate him a bit and make sure he deletes Lin Xiao's account," the officer said with a smile. "If you have any issues, just give us a call; there's no need for you to come down here personally." 0

It seemed that only then did Li Hao remember Lin Xiao and asked her how much money she had on her. 0

"Is Director Zhang's medical fee enough?" Li Hao looked at the middle-aged police officer and inquired. 0

"Of course it's enough," the officer replied with a forced smile, thinking to himself that even if Li Hao didn't provide any funds, he would still have to say it was sufficient. 0

Next, a young police officer brought Lin Xiao over to sign a settlement agreement. Frustrated, Lin Xiao stubbornly refused to sign. She tried to explain the stakes involved—signing meant she could go home, and the café owner had promised to delete her account. 0

Lin Xiao felt resentful towards herself; after all, that account represented more than half a month's salary for her sister, and she was adamant about not agreeing. 0

After tossing and turning all night, Lin Xiao lost her composure in anger and slapped herself across the face. "I'll ask you just once—are you going to sign or not?" 0

The sound of the slap echoed strangely in the night air. The tall Lin Xiao was stunned by the blow from her shorter counterpart. The last time she had been hit like this was in her second year of high school when she had skipped class to earn some money. Her sister had rushed home from university that night and slapped her without hesitation when they met at the construction site. 0

Reluctantly, Lin Xiao signed her name. 0

After that slap, Lin Xiao felt regret wash over her; she had poured all her humiliation and frustration into that one strike against herself. 0

Life had been merciless to her, and she vented all of that onto Lin Xiao. 0

"I'm sorry," Lin Xiao said as she stared blankly at the clear imprint left on her face, tears streaming down her cheeks. 0

That slap seemed to have jolted Lin Xiao awake. 0

Suddenly, Lin Mu pushed Lin Xiao hard. "What are you hitting him for? You heartless wretch!" 0

Still dazed from what had just happened, Lin Xiao stumbled backward from Du Mu's unexpected shove and fell onto the ground with a thud, her back colliding against a row of silver benches outside the police station. 0

Li Hao couldn't bear to watch any longer. He stepped forward and reached out to help Lin Xiao. 0

Perhaps she was still in shock from the collision; she sat on the ground for a moment, dazed, before brushing aside Li Hao's outstretched hand and pushing herself up with her own palm. 0

"Thank you, Li Secretary. I really didn't know what I would have done without you," Lin Xiao said, realizing her hand was scraped against the pavement. She truly didn't want to expose her embarrassment any further. 0

For the first time, Li Hao looked at her with such seriousness. Even in this situation, she remained composed, slightly lifting her head and blinking a few times to hold back her tears. 0

"I'll give you a ride," Li Hao said, feeling that there were already enough delays for one evening. 0

Lin Xiao glanced outside and saw that it was a car driven by Xiao Wang. "Thank you, but we live nearby. We can walk," she replied, struggling to maintain her composure and hoping Li Hao would leave quickly. 0

If Lin Xiao's situation had left her at a loss for words, then Lin Mu's earlier actions had filled her heart with a sense of grievance. 0

"You live at Xing Hong Yi Pin; it takes half an hour to walk there. It's so late, and we're in the suburbs—there's no public transport." Li Hao pierced through her lies and stubbornness. 0
