Lin Xiao saw Li Hao smile, and her heart finally relaxed. She had been with him for two years, and her work principle was to ensure his satisfaction; she understood him deeply. The first time she turned to leave, she noticed he was upset, which gave her the courage to turn back. She even knew how to self-deprecate to lift his spirits. It was important to leave a little room for others; they might meet again in the future. Xiangtian Province was not that big, and she could not afford to let him dislike her, especially since he was such an important figure.
Time flowed like water, and Lin Xiao's days were busy yet fulfilling. The New Year had come again, and Lin Xiao managed to persuade Lin Mu to come over early. Every day after work, she returned home only to be nagged by Du Mu about the chickens and ducks at home. As a third-year graduate student on winter break, Lin Xiao spent her days writing code at home, working hard to earn money and lighten her sister's burden.
Looking at their small two-bedroom apartment in the suburban area, Lin Xiao felt that all her efforts were worthwhile. The down payment for the house was substantial. Lin Xiao sold a set of game code for ten thousand yuan and received a scholarship of three thousand yuan from the school, all of which went to Lin Mu. Having graduated over five years ago, Lin Xiao had saved up twenty thousand yuan for household expenses but still had monthly loan payments due to mortgage deductions.
After dinner, while Lin Mu washed the dishes, she continued her endless chatter about the chickens and ducks at home. "Mom, please stop nagging; my sister has worked hard all day. Can you say a little less?" Lin Xiao was annoyed by her mother's incessant complaints; it was impressive that her sister could tolerate it.
Lin Mu was a typical rural woman who favored sons over daughters; once her son spoke up, she naturally fell silent. "Sister, I'm going out for a bit," Lin Xiao called out from the living room around seven in the evening.
Lin Mu didn't hear what Lin Xiao said as she was in her room reading but heard their mother calling from behind about how cold it was outside. Sometimes Lin Xiao felt helpless; for instance, during the New Year when it was freezing cold back home with drafts everywhere in their old house. After begging her mother for a week to come celebrate the New Year in the city, it was only when Lin Xiao said she would stay behind to write code that Lin Mu agreed to come.
Around ten o'clock at night, when Lin Xiao still hadn't returned home, she was just about to make a phone call when her own phone rang.
"Hello, we are officers from Quanshan Police Station. Your brother is Lin Xiao, right? You need to come here," the voice on the other end was cold and unyielding.
"What's happened to my brother?" Lin Xiao asked anxiously.
"You'll find out when you get here. You know where Quanshan Police Station is, right?" The other person sounded impatient.
As Lin Xiao grabbed her clothes and headed out the door, she saw Lin Mu hurriedly trying to follow her.
"Mom, wait for me at home." Lin Xiao said as she hurriedly put on her shoes and grabbed her bag.
"No, I'm going with you," Du Mu insisted stubbornly.
Lin Xiao didn't have time to argue with her. She rushed out the door, ignoring the surge in taxi fares at night, and hailed a cab.
When they arrived at the police station, Lin Xiao had a bruise on her forehead. Lin Mu began to wail loudly, demanding to know who had done this.
Lin Xiao's eyes turned red with anger as she saw Lin Mu and felt a wave of shame wash over her.
The police officer at the station explained the situation in detail.
After dinner, Lin Xiao copied her completed code onto a USB drive and took it to an internet café to test it out. To her surprise, the café owner was quite knowledgeable and came over to offer suggestions for improvements.
Lin Xiao thought she had found a kindred spirit and engaged in a lively conversation with the owner. She had never been to such meetings before, so she was unaware of the darker side of human nature.
The owner directly accessed the café's network and hacked into Lin Xiao's code.
Lin Xiao quickly realized what was happening; there was no way she would let the café owner get away with this.
She had spent six months writing this code and had secured exclusive rights for it, planning to deliver it as a New Year's gift for her sister after the Spring Festival.
The two of them ended up in a physical altercation. Fueled by anger, Lin Xiao lost control of her strength and ended up breaking the owner's elbow.
