It was merely her own infatuation that blurred her sense of self, leading her to have unrealistic expectations of him. The thought that she might not hold much significance in his heart was daunting, especially since she had once entered his heart. It felt somewhat absurd to even entertain such thoughts. Once she came to terms with it, she felt a sense of relief.
"County Chief, my public service period is over. I’ll report to the Provincial Government next week. Please take care." Lin Xiao knocked on the door and entered, not sitting down, planning to say what she needed and leave.
"Please, have a seat." Li Hao noticed she was standing and realized she had finished speaking. He thought to himself that it seemed county officials were not as effective as those currently in charge.
He understood that it would be impossible for them to meet privately in the future, and parting so hastily left him with a sense of regret. "You’ve done well these past two years; I’m satisfied with your work. I wish you continued success in your new position," Li Hao sincerely praised her again, making Lin Xiao feel a bit embarrassed.
"I won’t attend the farewell banquet arranged by Luo Ren for you. This is a gift for you." Li Hao took out an unopened mobile phone from his drawer.
"County Chief, this gift is too valuable. I can’t accept it," Lin Xiao quickly declined.
This phone was newly distributed by the government office to various county leaders, and she had even helped procure it. However, Li Hao had high standards for electronic products and didn’t find it suitable.
"Just take it; it’s of no use to me. You’ll be at the Provincial Government soon, and Yurou County will still need your support," Li Hao said, implying that he was just being polite.
Lin Xiao understood that he didn’t want to continue the conversation with her. She picked up the phone, thanked him, and left.
That evening, Luo Qianwei organized a small farewell gathering for Lin Xiao with a few young people.
After handling matters related to Yu Rao, Lin Xiao arrived at the Provincial Organization Department's Organization Division. The main responsibility of the Organization Division was to oversee promotions and transfers of provincial-level cadres.
Currently, there was one Director, two Deputy Directors, and four staff members in the division. The Director was responsible for overall operations while the two Deputy Directors specifically handled Xiang Tianbei and Xiang Tian Nan.
Since Lin Xiao had come from the Xiang Tian Nan area, she worked alongside Deputy Director Lv in that division. Compared to the cumbersome tasks at the county level, the workload in the Organization Division was considerably lighter; however, the precision required was exceptionally high—there could be no mistakes whatsoever.
With some free time on her hands, Lin Xiao spent her weekends familiarizing herself with her work at the office. The rent in the provincial capital was exorbitant; she borrowed a place to stay from a university where she had pursued her doctorate for a few days before securing her own rental.
She shared an apartment with two unfamiliar girls near a subway station outside the city center. Due to their differing schedules, she found herself missing the camaraderie she had shared with Li Hui and their other roommates.
The two girls were surprised that Lin Xiao, a provincial civil servant, lived in such a humble room, especially considering her job. Lin Xiao smiled and explained that her financial situation was modest.
In the outskirts of the provincial city, she rented the smallest room in a two-bedroom apartment for a month. The two girls shared a room together. Upon arriving in the provincial city, Lin Xiao set a savings goal for herself; she wanted to buy a small house of her own, even if it was in the suburbs.
With this goal in mind, Lin Xiao nearly always ate in the cafeteria, which offered subsidized meals. Three meals a day only cost her a few dollars. She was determined to settle down in this city.
