Luo Qianwei felt that both the Li County Chief and Lin Xiao had a fire within them that could light up others. He believed he could not find anyone more suitable to be the secretary for the Li County Chief.
If it weren't for Miao Shizhang, Lin Xiao might have hesitated. She had been a civil servant for over four years, and her peers had already begun to transition to deputy positions. If all went well, she would soon follow suit. However, she did not want to remain in Yurou County just for a deputy position.
Had it not been for the lack of suitable candidates in the government office, she would never have had the chance to serve as a male county chief's secretary. She would forever be relegated to being a female Executive Deputy County Head's secretary, and in the future, she could only aspire to be a female Deputy Town Head or a deputy director.
She had memorized the contact numbers of all county-level officials and found that there were very few women in leadership roles. As a single woman, she felt particularly disadvantaged. In her first year on the job, incidents of harassment had only recently begun to fade. After one such incident, the town mayor was laughed at for his drunken behavior. Everyone knew she was innocent, yet they said that flies do not buzz around an egg without cracks.
She thought she could become strong enough to ignore others' opinions, but Miao Shizhang's harassment and Li Hao's reactions left her feeling lost. In such circumstances, she couldn't even find someone to confide in.
Most importantly, she didn't know how to face Li Hao again. She longed to be a mature professional woman, but whenever she saw him, memories of that night flooded back. She once respected him greatly, but now she held nothing but disdain for him; he was nothing more than a hypocrite.
She knew that the approval for her application was beyond Luo Qianwei's control. When Lin Xiao delivered documents to Li Hao, she also brought along her application consent form. After he signed the documents, she said, "Li County Chief, I want to participate in this year's provincial civil servant selection."
Li Hao put down his pen and looked at her seriously. "That incident has been dealt with; it won't happen again." Since that event, he could sense that Lin Xiao had reverted to the cautiousness and restraint she had when she first became his secretary, as if their familiarity from the past two years had vanished.
"No," she replied. "I've learned so much from you over these two years; I'm very grateful for your guidance." However, internally she thought, you’ve shown me that there is no kindness in this world.
"Lin Xiao," he said firmly, "if you decide to apply, regardless of whether you pass or not, I will no longer have you as my secretary. I won't keep a secretary who might leave at any moment." It was rare for Li Hao to talk so much about anything outside of work.
"I will stand by until the very end and will never cause you any trouble," Lin Xiao humbly declared.
She realized then that regardless of whether she succeeded or not in her application, she no longer wanted to be his secretary.
After Lin Xiao left, Li Hao set down his pen. He could sense that Miao Shizhang had changed significantly since their incident; while her work performance remained impeccable, her demeanor had shifted considerably. She spoke even less than before and lacked the warm smile that used to radiate from within when delivering documents.
Li Hao was surprised to find himself noticing the emotional changes in a subordinate.
As they say, forcing something that doesn’t want to happen will yield no sweetness; if she's going to leave, then let her go.
He pressed the intercom button, and soon Luo Qianwei arrived.
Hearing Li Hao's words, Luo Qianwei suppressed her surprise, struggling with whether to say something or not, but in the end, she chose to hold back. Neither Luo Qianwei nor Lin Xiao had anticipated that Li Hao would present her with such a grand gift as she approached.
