In the evening, Lin Xiao drove Li Hao's private car, following him and Yu Rao to a local specialty restaurant. Lin Xiao suspected that this was not a business meeting, as such a unique little eatery would not typically be chosen for that purpose. She parked the car in front of the restaurant, intending to let Li Hao get out first.
However, Li Hao remained seated in the car, which puzzled Lin Xiao. She decided to follow his instructions and drove to a parking space in front of the restaurant. After parking, Lin Xiao got out and opened the trunk to grab some wine. Li Hao emerged from the back seat and lifted a box of wine from the trunk.
"Let me handle it," Lin Xiao quickly stepped forward, ready to take it from him, thinking that she couldn't let her superior do the work.
Li Hao glanced at her with a half-smile before carrying the wine towards the restaurant. Lin Xiao followed behind him, feeling awkward as she pursed her lips. This was probably why he didn't enjoy having her as his secretary.
When they entered the private room, the others had not yet arrived. "Boss, do you need me to order in advance?" Lin Xiao asked, careful not to address him as County Chief, fearing it might cause unnecessary trouble.
"Just see what Zhao likes; we’re all alumni from Xiangda tonight," Li Hao replied, knowing that Lin Xiao had been with Zhao Hua for over a year. Given Lin Xiao's personality, he was confident she understood Zhao Hua's preferences well.
In a restaurant like this that specialized in unique dishes, ordering was often based on what looked good. If there were any special pairings, they could be suggested too. They ordered six cold dishes—three meat and three vegetarian: spicy gourd strips, fresh chili beef tripe, sauced donkey meat, hamburger tofu patties, jellyfish with radish sprouts, and cold jellyfish salad—along with a plate of stir-fried vegetables and another of braised dishes.
Lin Xiao held the menu and briefly reported back to Li Hao about their selections. He had no objections; he trusted Lin Xiao’s judgment and instructed the waiter to prepare the dishes.
Before long, guests began to arrive one after another. Lin Xiao retreated to a corner of the private room; when guests came over to greet her, she timely poured them glasses of water. Although this was typically the waitstaff's job, she knew that Li Hao valued privacy and preferred not to have waiters hovering while he spoke with friends.
After two more guests arrived, Li Hao suggested playing cards. With three players short one person, Lin Xiao joined in to make up the numbers. At this point, the two guests realized that Lin Xiao was someone Li Hao had brought along.
Both were somewhat puzzled; judging by Li Hao's demeanor, she didn’t seem like a girlfriend. However, bringing her out in such a setting indicated she wasn't just an ordinary subordinate either. They were unsure how to interact with her.
In this remote county town, it was surprising to find such an exquisite-looking girl. Her clear and bright eyes sparkled with a gentle smile as she politely nodded in greeting. When she picked up two decks of cards from the table and lowered her head to shuffle them, a strand of hair slipped behind her ear and fell across her cheek.
Sitting beside her, Chen Liewei watched for a while in astonishment; he hadn’t noticed before but now saw that her profile was truly stunning.
He had initially intended to make a joke, but he quickly suppressed that thought, fully aware of Li Hao's temper.
Lin Xiao had just finished shuffling the cards when Zhao Hua and a few other guests arrived. Everyone was busy exchanging pleasantries, and Lin Xiao wisely stepped aside, becoming an invisible presence.
"Lin Xiao, is it easier to be Li Hao's secretary than to follow me around?" Zhao Hua remarked as he spotted Lin Xiao standing quietly in the corner, just as before.
When Lin Xiao looked at Zhao Hua again, a wave of warmth washed over him. It felt good to see an old friend, and the smile in his eyes grew more genuine. "Hello, Zhao."
"This is our junior sister. When I was on duty, Lin Xiao was my assistant secretary and often bore the brunt of my temper," Zhao Hua said sincerely, causing Lin Xiao to feel a bit embarrassed.
From Zhao Hua's friendly banter, Lin Xiao realized that it was Hua Jie who had asked Li Hao to call him over, which made him feel a little more at ease.
For some reason, being around Zhao Hua made Lin Xiao instinctively feel safe and less awkward. Unlike Hua Jie, who likely went unnoticed by most, Lin Xiao's role was simply that of a server, pouring tea and offering refreshments.
