Compared to Luo Qianwei and Zhou Binshui, who were busy starting fires, Lin Xiao was living a much more leisurely life.
She no longer had to arrive at the office by eight o'clock to check the leaders' schedules in advance or deal with the documents that came in that night. Lin Xiao's current job was relatively simple; she was responsible for answering external phone calls for the office, including telegrams from higher authorities and routine document submissions from lower-level agencies. After receiving directives from various county leaders, she would distribute correspondence to different units, and urgent matters would be communicated via phone.
Having worked as a secretary for a long time, Lin Xiao had developed a good habit of reviewing documents. For any items that needed to be reported to the leaders, she would prepare a brief summary on a separate page to attach to the front of the document. In just two weeks, both the county mayor and the Executive Deputy County Head received reports from their respective secretaries that included her concise summaries.
At first, everyone assumed it was their own secretaries who were responsible for these summaries, but later they realized it was Lin Xiao's work. A few familiar with Lin Xiao and the Executive Deputy County Head expressed regret that she was not serving as the county mayor's secretary anymore and had moved to the document room. Everyone knew how difficult Zhao Chenghua could be, yet Lin Xiao managed to work with him for over a year, which spoke volumes about her capabilities. It was puzzling why the county mayor did not want her as his secretary.
By the fourth week, Zhang Deputy County Head, who took over responsibilities from Zhao Chenghua regarding water and environmental protection, approached Luo Qianwei and Luo Ren. He suggested that Lin Xiao was underutilized in the document room and proposed having her serve as his secretary instead, noting that she was already familiar with this line of work and understood certain situations better than he did.
Luo Qianwei, ever cautious, immediately flattered Zhang Deputy County Head by saying, "County Head Zhang, you truly have an eye for talent. Our Lin Xiao's professional skills are undeniable; it's just that if you could wait a bit longer regarding Li County Chief..."
During this time, Luo Qianwei felt mentally exhausted. He not only had to coordinate all office work but also write drafts for Li County Chief. The task of preparing materials fell entirely on Lin Xiao; he only needed to review them since her writing was excellent and she grasped the leaders' intentions well enough that little modification was needed. In contrast, Zhou Bin's submissions were completely unusable. Meng Kai from the Organization Department could write some minor materials but lacked the necessary depth for county-level matters.
Li County Chief could not employ two secretaries simultaneously; that would reflect poorly on his office management. Luo Qianwei still held onto the hope of transferring Lin Xiao back to his team; having her around would certainly alleviate many of his worries.
While others struggled through their demanding lives, Lin Xiao enjoyed a relaxed month and even had weekends free to go shopping with Shang Juan. This was a lifestyle she had never experienced in nearly two years as a secretary.
Used to being busy since childhood, Lin Xiao found herself somewhat unaccustomed to this newfound leisure. She recalled an incident in Gulou District involving Geng Wei and thought it was just bullying because she was a girl. With nothing else to do, she decided to enroll in a Sanda class.
On her first weekend attending class, she found herself placed in a beginner's group with several children around ten years old. Feeling embarrassed, she approached the coach hoping to switch to an adult class; standing among a bunch of kids made her feel like a tree stump rather than standing out like a crane among chickens. The mischievous kids even teased her.
The coach, who looked about as young as some of the boys in class, felt somewhat friendly toward such a pretty girl. However, when she approached him lightly stepping over, he could tell right away that she lacked any foundational skills. "Why don't you warm up with them first?" he suggested.
Seeing the coach's firm attitude, Lin Xiao thought since she was already there, she might as well run with them. Following behind those little kids at first felt slow due to their short legs, but by the fourth lap around the field, she began to feel winded.
After completing ten laps, she collapsed onto the ground, gasping for breath and drenched in sweat, with streams of perspiration flowing down from her chest.
"Are you still going to switch to the adult class? Those kids have been training for over a year," the coach asked Lin Xiao deliberately.
Lin Xiao waved her hand in resignation. After one class, those little ones were energized as if they had been injected with adrenaline, while she felt as though she had been beaten up, her arms and limbs covered in bruises.
The coach advised her to find a place for a massage that evening and told her that she wouldn't be exercising the next day. If she wanted to improve quickly, she needed to practice running to increase her lung capacity.
