Meng Xin and Dian Zhen, despite their confusion over the unfolding events and the inexplicable behavior of one of their own, did not lower their guard. Instead, they kept a close watch on Chen Zeng and the group of servants, fearing that more unpredictable situations might arise.
Chen Zeng furrowed his brows, equally puzzled by this sudden turn of events. What was happening? Had he lost his mind? There was no time to delve into these questions; he waved his hand decisively. "Forget it, no matter what’s going on with him. Everyone, follow my lead! If we succeed, each of you will receive thirty pounds of grain."
The high bounty instantly ignited the fighting spirit of the hungry and desperate crowd; the value of food in these harsh times was undeniable. Upon hearing Chen Zeng's added reward, the group could no longer afford to dwell on their companion's odd behavior. They raised their fists and charged forward.
However, just as they were about to launch their attack, a furious roar erupted from behind them, reminiscent of a volcanic eruption: "You dare?!"
Everyone halted abruptly at the sound, including Chen Zeng, who turned to see what had caused such a commotion. In that sunlit moment, they beheld two figures. One was an unfamiliar face, while the other was someone they all knew too well—a name that haunted their dreams.
It was Dian Wei! Dian Wei had finally returned!
In that instant, they were transported back to days long past when an unrefined Dian Wei had already displayed terrifying strength, often taking on multiple opponents single-handedly with ease. As time passed, Dian Wei's martial skills had only advanced further, meaning that dealing with him now would be even more challenging than before.
At this moment, Dian Wei stood at the entrance wielding dual tridents, his eyes radiating a cold and merciless light as if an oppressive atmosphere filled the air around him.
Those who had intended to strike just moments ago immediately changed their demeanor upon seeing him, retreating quickly with forced smiles plastered on their faces.
Realizing Dian Wei's arrival, Chen Zeng quickly sought to defend himself. "Dian Wei, I didn’t mean—"
But before he could finish his sentence, Dian Wei appeared before him in a flash. With a swift motion, his trident effortlessly sliced through Chen Zeng's carotid artery.
With a soft thud, a head fell to the ground as blood gushed forth like the scorching sun in summer—bright and blinding.
Dian Wei's gaze swept across the crowd like a hawk surveying its prey. His voice was cold and unyielding: "Weren't you quite arrogant just now? Dare to threaten my parents? This is your fate."
He then turned his ruthless gaze towards the others who still stood trembling in place. "Bullying the weak comes at a price."
"Get lost," he commanded. "I refuse to stain my hands because of you."
You better remember what I said, so that when I see you again, I won't hold back.
After this statement, those servants who had initially hoped to take advantage seemed to find a glimmer of hope for survival. They rushed out of the house as if fleeing for their lives, regretting that they didn't have longer legs to escape faster.
Dian Wei cast a cold glance at the headless body beneath his feet, a slight smirk playing on his lips as he muttered, "What a hassle."
He then picked up Chen Zeng's body along with its head and discarded them outside the courtyard before turning back into the house.
Meng Xin looked at the still-fresh bloodstains on Dian Wei's clothes and felt no disgust; instead, she was filled with immense admiration. She knew that everything she had witnessed was a profound emotional experience for her, more moving than any traditional hero saving a damsel in distress. If it weren't for the inappropriate circumstances, she would have expressed her gratitude in her own way.
Meanwhile, Dian Zhen had recovered from his initial shock and grabbed Dian Wei, demanding sternly, "Rebellious son, why did you do such a thing?"
In front of Dian Zhen, the seemingly fierce Dian Wei appeared like a child. He lowered his head and replied, "Father, he was trying to bully you and Sister Meng Xin. I heard it all clearly and couldn't stand it, so I killed him."
Dian Zhen sighed deeply and began pacing back and forth in the room. "You killed Chen Zeng; the situation is now beyond repair. Not to mention that Chen Zeng has close ties with the county magistrate. You were too reckless."
