As they were preparing to continue their conversation, a chaotic noise erupted outside the door: "Old man Dian, is Meng Xin hiding in your house?"
Hearing Chen Zeng's voice, both of them showed signs of panic. Dian Zhen gently reassured her, "Miss, you stay inside and don't move. I'll go deal with him."
Meng Xin hesitated for a moment before nodding. Dian Zhen took a deep breath and stepped out of the house. "Village Chief Chen, what brings you here?"
Upon seeing Dian Zhen, Chen Zeng's face was filled with anger. "Old man, don't play dumb. Is Meng Xin hiding here?"
"Village Chief, you must be mistaken. How could a young lady like Meng Xin come to my place? It's just me and my wife here; there’s no one else."
Chen Zeng coldly stared at Dian Zhen and retorted, "Old man, do you want to go against me? With that attitude, it seems you don’t want to earn this month's money."
Dian Zhen pretended not to hear and sincerely said, "Village Chief, I assure you that Meng Xin is not here. Why don’t you check somewhere else?"
Chen Zeng let out a laugh. "If she’s not here, then checking will prove it, won’t it?" He waved his hand to signal his men to prepare for a search of the house.
At that moment, Dian Zhen stood in front of the door. "Village Chief, this is my home."
Chen Zeng's gaze was sharp. "Do you dare block me?"
Dian Zhen stood firm in place. The tension in the air grew thicker as Meng Xin decided to step forward and stand beside Dian Zhen. "Dian Shu, let me handle this."
Dian Zhen looked at her, trying to speak but ultimately falling silent with a heavy sigh. "Child, this is all because of your Dian Shu's incompetence."
Meng Xin gently shook her head. "Don't say that, Dian Shu; it's not your fault."
Turning to glare at Chen Zeng, she declared, "So you've finally shown yourself? You still talk about hiding—debts must be repaid. You need to understand that even though my father is no longer here, it doesn’t mean your debts can be erased."
Chen Zeng looked at Meng Xin with a cold smile and said, "A son must repay his father's debts; this is only right. As his daughter, you have an obligation to repay the debts your father owes me."
Clearly, he had little interest in Meng Xin herself. After all, as the wealthiest landlord in the village, he could have any woman he desired. His true motive was the ten acres of fertile land that Meng Xin possessed.
When she realized that her true intentions had been exposed, Meng Xin angrily questioned him, "If it weren't for your misleading my father, he wouldn't have fallen into such a predicament!"
"This is due to his own weakness," Chen Zeng replied dismissively, adding, "Our contract clearly states everything; there has been no concealment."
This only fueled Meng Xin's fury further. "You clearly took advantage of my father's illiteracy."
Recently, due to a prolonged drought, their once-thriving family farm had seen a decline in production, though it had not completely failed. The situation this year was far from what it used to be.
What worried them most was that Meng Xin had a large appetite and consumed a great deal of food. Unfortunately, their stored grain was insufficient to meet their needs.
With no other options available and considering his daughter’s well-being, Meng Xin's father ultimately used their ten acres of prime farmland as collateral to borrow some grain from Chen Zeng, promising to repay it during the autumn harvest.
Unfortunately, Meng Xin's father was illiterate. Thus, they verbally agreed on an annual interest rate of five percent. Although this interest rate was relatively high, it was still manageable for a small loan. After the autumn harvest, even if they had to tighten their belts, they would barely be able to repay the debt.
