"Dian Wei" whispered, "Shh, look over there. Is there anyone on the north side?"
They knew that the number of sentries on this first line of defense was limited, as the personnel in "Xiang Tang Mountain Stronghold" totaled only a little over a hundred, making it impossible to deploy them in large numbers.
Before long, "Dian Wei" and his companions discovered all the sentries within the first layer of defense at the foot of the mountain. There were two of them who were even more relaxed than "Ming Shao," sleeping on the hillside, completely unaware as "Dian Wei" and "Chu Yan" approached silently.
With a hand signal, both sides swiftly moved in, gripping their necks and gently twisting.
There was a faint crack, and the two sentries passed away quietly in their sleep, without any struggle or pain. Despite "Dian Wei's" overwhelming strength causing their necks to twist before returning to position, it did not significantly affect the completion of their mission.
Once the sentries were dealt with, "Gao Shun" also approached "Ming Shao," employing similar methods to effortlessly take a life. The three then moved forward with the bandits toward the next designated line of defense—two layers set at the mountainside and mountaintop—where the obvious guards would soon become their next targets.
Aside from five sentries hiding in obscure locations, everyone else had been discovered. When they were found, they were already in a state of meeting with the Duke of Zhou. Consequently, their fates were all the same.
"Dian Wei" and his companions handled these sentries by twisting their necks before proceeding into the "Mountain Bandit" lair. Under the guidance of an insider, they quickly located where the "Mountain Bandits" resided.
These houses were mostly makeshift structures, with each room potentially housing over ten "Mountain Bandits" for the night. "Dian Wei" and his team cautiously entered one of the rooms and drew their weapons. They began their decapitation operation efficiently and silently.
Just as they were about to eliminate the last enemy, a strong smell of blood startled him awake. However, before he could fully see who had come for him after opening his eyes, his throat was cut by a small knife drawn by "Dian Wei."
He clutched his neck as blood gushed out, opening his mouth as if to say something but ultimately uttered nothing before collapsing helplessly to the ground, bidding farewell to life amid painful convulsions.
About a quarter of an hour later, "Dian Wei," "Chu Yan," and "Gao Shun," covered in blood, emerged from the last house with relaxed expressions on their faces. As expected, all the "Mountain Bandits" in "Xiang Tang Mountain" had been eradicated by them.
Then, holding up the traitorous "Mountain Bandit," "Dian Wei" pointed at the deceased one by one and asked, "Is your leader inside?"
However, the answer received was a negative one.
Dian Wei asked again for confirmation, but the response remained the same: not here. Faced with this situation, Dian Wei sighed helplessly and said, "This guy is quite clever; he probably sensed we were coming to trouble him and escaped in advance."
Beside him, Chu Yan agreed, "That's right. It's a pity; I didn't expect him to be so sensitive."
After a brief discussion, they decided that since they couldn't find the leader, they might as well check if there were any valuables or treasures worth taking from the village. If they found anything, they would take it; if not, they would let the source of all this evil turn to ashes.
During their search, the three of them passed through the kitchen and the granary. The sight there sent chills down their spines.
Those places were littered with numerous victims; many innocent women and children lay on the ground, creating a scene reminiscent of a living hell. This sight made Dian Wei, Chu Yan, and Gao Shun feel a shiver run down their spines.
Despite their thorough search, they ultimately found only a few valuable items in the granary; it was almost completely empty. It was clear that the leader had taken everything he could carry before fleeing.
After ensuring that nothing of value was left behind, the three warriors piled all the Mountain Bandits in the hall of the Shanzhai and set them ablaze, letting all their evil vanish with the flames.
As the flickering firelight danced around them, the three once again faced betrayal.
Dian Wei said, "Remember what I told you: as long as you cooperate, I can spare your life." Now he had fulfilled his promise as he wished.
However, contrary to what that person expected, he had not managed to escape from this place.
Dian Wei continued, "But I am a man of my word; once I promise you a way out, I will not go back on it."
Upon hearing this, the betrayer's face showed signs of tension and confusion, followed by an overwhelming sense of disbelief and joy.
Just as he was about to express his gratitude to his benefactor and attempt to leave, Dian Wei quickly stepped forward and captured him once more.
"But that doesn’t mean you can walk away unscathed. You owe us for that robbery; you should find a way to repay it."
With that, Dian Wei made a decisive statement: "Then let your loss of both legs serve as compensation for us."
Dian Wei swung his short spear and directly severed the legs of the rebellious Bandit.
"Ouch!"
The Bandit let out a piercing cry. The excruciating pain nearly caused him to lose consciousness. Dian Wei approached him and said, "I have left you a way to survive; whether you can live or not depends on your fate."
As soon as the words left his mouth, he turned to leave with Chu Yan and Gao Shun, leaving the despairing eyes of the Bandit behind.
The fire in the mountain's hideout grew fiercer, smoke billowing thickly into the sky.
About ten miles away from Xiang Tang Mountain, Xu tightened his grip on Ma Zhao and turned back to look at the mountain. Though they were far apart, he could still faintly see the blinding flames atop the mountain, sending a chill of fear through him.
If I hadn't run fast, I might not have escaped this calamity either.
