Dian Wei's eyes showed no sign of wavering. "What I want is simple. Just tell the truth, and I will let you go. If you lie, well, you’ve seen the consequences."
Upon hearing there was a chance of survival, a flicker of hope ignited in the eyes of the bandits. "Sir, we will definitely tell you everything! We won’t hide a single detail!"
Dian Wei nodded and turned to one of the bandits. "Tell me, which faction do you belong to? Why did you attack us?"
The bandit hesitated for a moment, but Dian Wei's expression left no room for doubt. Suddenly, the bandit drew his short blade and, in one swift motion, severed the head of his companion. Blood sprayed forth, splattering Dian Wei's body.
Under the moonlight, the scene was even more gruesome and terrifying. "Do you think I can’t see what you’re thinking? Do you think you can deceive me?"
The remaining bandits watched in horror as their fear of Dian Wei deepened. The kindness he had shown moments ago vanished without a trace.
The interrogation continued seamlessly. Under Dian Wei's merciless questioning, the second and third bandits confessed one after another. They admitted that their intentions were not only to plunder but also to kill everyone for food. Due to the drought, they had gone days without eating and could not conquer the wealthy in the city; even the impoverished refugees they encountered had nothing to offer.
The last prisoner trembled as he shouted in response to Dian Wei's final question, "It’s true! We were driven by hunger! We wanted to eat people! Please, spare my life!"
Thus, their leader led them away. The excess could serve as reserve food supplies.
Usually, they would first send scouts to lurk nearby and search for targets. They typically preyed on the elderly and weak, as they were the easiest to bully. Especially under the cover of night, they launched their attacks; aside from this incident, they had never failed.
At these words, those around them displayed expressions of disgust. Such actions were utterly inhumane.
Though survival often drove people to desperate measures—many only acted after others had died or exchanged children for food—this blatant robbery by bandits was unheard of!
It was truly a loss of humanity; it was far too cruel!
An elderly man, upon hearing this, furiously approached with his cane and struck the bandit on the head with great force.
With a sudden sound, the bandit immediately fainted. Dian Wei did not intervene; after all, there was still one survivor left.
As Dian Wei approached slowly, the last bandit trembled uncontrollably, repeatedly saying, "I was wrong, I truly was wrong. I promise to turn over a new leaf and become a better person."
Dian Wei sneered and leaned down to ask, "My words remain unchanged. If your performance is satisfactory, I might consider giving you a chance to live."
The bandit quickly agreed, "I will speak honestly and leave nothing out. So far, how many people have you killed?"
Dian Wei pressed on.
The bandit hesitated before answering, "More than five hundred!"
Gasp! Everyone present inhaled sharply. More than five hundred lives! This was not just about five hundred chickens; it was terrifying beyond measure! Their actions had completely betrayed the basic tenets of humanity.
Dian Wei's anger flared, his gaze sharp as he demanded, "How many people are in your gang? Who is the leader? Answer my questions in detail!"
The bandit nodded repeatedly, saying, "Our group has two leaders and more than a hundred members, along with over fifty warhorses. It was our scouts who first discovered you all. They found that most of you were women and children, thinking it would be easy to take advantage of you. So the Grand Chief personally led half of our men and all our horses to launch a night raid against you."
The other leader stayed behind with the remaining members at the camp in the mountains.
As he spoke, he glanced at the Gao Clan members, realizing that the Gao Family was clearly the target of this bandit attack. If they hadn't encountered Dian Wei at that moment and received those rations, everyone would likely have ended up as bones beneath the desolate earth.
"Oh, no wait,"
Given the brutality of this group of bandits, they would leave no bones behind, turning their victims into mere food for their bellies.
"Hero Dian Wei," the gratitude expressed need not be excessive; in the future, should there be a need, our Gao Family will surely dedicate ourselves wholeheartedly and loyally serve by your side.
In response to these words, Dian Wei waved his hand and replied, "It is nothing to speak of. Helping those in need is the duty of a hero, especially when facing such heartless criminals."
Then, Dian Wei pressed the captured bandit further, "Where did you acquire those dozens of horses?"
The horses ridden by these bandits were rare Hequ Horses, each capable of being exchanged for dozens of acres of farmland. How could a group of Mountain Bandits possess such wealth? Furthermore, judging by their earlier performance, it was clear that they had not been riding for long and their skills appeared quite unrefined.
The last captive hurriedly explained, "Those horses were obtained through persuasion by our mountain's Second Leader."
"Persuasion?" The crowd looked on with skepticism.
Gao stepped forward and addressed Dian Wei, "Hero Dian Wei, may I ask a few more questions?"
Dian Wei nodded in agreement, "Of course, please go ahead."
Gao leaned on his cane and slowly bent down to inquire, "You mentioned you have two leaders; can you tell me their names?"
The bandit replied, "The name of the Big Boss is Wang Yue. As for the Second Leader's name, we truly do not know."
Seeing Dian Wei's brow furrowed and his gaze intense, the bandit quickly added, "We genuinely do not know his real name; we simply refer to him as Second Leader."
Then Gao asked again:
