John wasn't sure if it was the goddess of luck or just a bad day, but he had opened several containers only to find either rotting animals or foul-smelling, slimy fish. Once again, after being deterred by a mouse that smelled worse than anything he had encountered, John decided he was done. Whoever continued to open these containers was a fool—he thought the word but didn't say it out loud.
"Hey, look!" Kuiradi shouted, pulling a set of armor from a burning spider web. It appeared to be Plate Armor.
"You've got some luck," John said enviously, watching Kuiradi. "Fools have their fortunes."
Turning his attention to the last spider silk cocoon nearby, John felt a surge of determination. He decided to give it one last shot. Drawing his sword, he lifted a strand of spider silk and ignited it with his torch. As the flames caught hold, he timed his move perfectly, bending down to slice through the cocoon with his One-Handed Sword.
The blade severed the cocoon and cut through the flames. With his sword returned to its sheath and his gaze sharp, John found what he had hoped for—something valuable.
A skeletal figure clutched a decayed wooden chest. Judging by its appearance, it seemed to be a victim from long ago. John used his spear to poke at the skull, ensuring that no undead would rise again. Then he reached into the skeleton's grasp and pulled forcefully; as he yanked on the wooden chest, the entire skeleton collapsed in an instant.
The sound of bones clattering echoed in the air.
Kuiradi, excited about his own find of Plate Armor, hurried over to John's side. "Open it quickly! I want to see what's inside!"
"Calm down," John replied, feigning nonchalance as he opened the chest. A wave of sour odor hit him hard, nearly causing him to drop it.
"Is this it?"
Inside the chest lay no treasures—only a piece of parchment that was covered in some sort of substance. The chest was coated in green mold, yet the paper itself remained intact.
As John examined the parchment more closely, it began to resemble another piece he had found previously; the material was identical, and the writing on the seal looked similar as well.
Kuiradi noticed this too. "This looks like that paper from the Stench Mud Monster's belly last time."
John replied thoughtfully, "I remember pulling that paper out; I completely forgot to look at it."
I pulled off the already decayed binding string and unfolded the parchment, relieved that I had learned to read the words through magic last time. Finally, I could see what it was.
Cobra Skin (dried) - 100 grams.
Mantis Shrimp (live) - 300 grams.
