From childhood until now, he had heard many tales about fireflies but had never seen these lovely little spirits with his own eyes. Today, he finally witnessed them, and indeed, their reputation was well-deserved. It was no wonder the older generations always said that the most beautiful nights were adorned and illuminated by fireflies.
"Look, sir," he said, "those fireflies seem to be flying right towards us!" Beside him, Kuiradi stared curiously at the approaching swarm of fireflies, a hint of surprise on his face.
Hearing Kuiradi's words, John smiled slightly, feeling a sense of pride. After all, he had watched plenty of short videos on social media and had some understanding of such phenomena. Today was finally an opportunity to show off his knowledge in front of his subordinates.
"You don't understand; this is called phototaxis. Some insects are drawn to light sources—like moths to a flame."
"Oh," Kuiradi nodded, indicating that he had learned something new. "As expected of you, sir; you are so knowledgeable."
The soldiers on the outer edge were the first to notice something unusual. Their eyes were fixed on the group of fireflies that were slowly approaching.
As time passed, they gradually realized that these fireflies were flying unusually slowly, as if burdened by a heavy weight. Moreover, a strange rustling sound began to reach their ears, which felt particularly jarring and eerie in the stillness of the night.
One sharp-eyed soldier suddenly spoke up. "Wait a minute, sir! Look at those fireflies—they're all flying at the same height! And there's a strange noise coming from the forest; could there be some danger approaching?"
As soon as he finished speaking, the others immediately sensed that something was wrong. They quickly stood up, gripping their weapons tightly as they stared intently into the dark and deep woods.
In an instant, the entire scene fell silent; no one dared to break this tense quietude. Everyone held their breath, waiting silently for the unknown threat to reveal itself.
Aside from the rustling sounds coming from the forest, the only noise that could be heard was someone swallowing nervously due to overwhelming tension.
Just when everyone’s nerves were stretched to their limits, a low shout suddenly shattered the silence!
Moments later, a dozen pale skeletal figures emerged from the trees. They moved with stiff and mechanical steps, slowly advancing toward the soldiers. It was then that everyone realized that what they had thought were fireflies were actually faint glimmers emanating from the hollow eye sockets of these skeletons.
The soldiers were instantly terrified by such horrifying creatures; their faces turned pale as they stumbled backward in fear. Some even found their legs turning to jelly, making it difficult for them to stand.
"My God! These skeletons can move! What kind of monsters are these?"
Could they be the demons from legend? Fear enveloped everyone's hearts, robbing them of any courage to resist.
John also stared in horror at the skeletons. He hadn't expected such monsters existed on this island. He wanted to retreat but felt an instinctive reassurance from within as his Universal Qi Training Method flowed through him—these creatures weren't as terrifying as they seemed.
"Weapon Blessing!"
The Holy Light Aura enveloped his sword with a soft yellow glow. He gripped his shield tightly and charged at the nearest skeleton with all his strength. To his surprise, when he collided with it, it shattered into pieces.
With his sword plunged fiercely into what remained of its skull, the soul flame extinguished instantly, leaving only scattered bones behind without any reaction.
"Don't be afraid! These things aren't strong! Everyone grab your spears and counterattack! Their weakness is their heads!"
As their fear dissipated, everyone began to wield their spears—thrusting and stabbing in a flurry of attacks.
Tsk, tsk, tsk!
