John had no need for mercenaries, but he definitely needed to purchase some serfs, especially since the recent orc raid had left Salty Fish Village in a precarious situation with an uncertain number of survivors. As for the chef, he preferred to cultivate his own talent; after all, with his new status as a lord, he couldn't afford to compromise on his culinary standards.
"Let's see," he said thoughtfully. "Bring me a selection of strong and healthy light serfs, with a gender ratio according to the standard." John issued his orders methodically. After mentioning the serfs, he paused for a moment, seemingly recalling other necessities. "Oh, and don't forget to prepare a batch of high-quality seeds and various practical farming tools."
Upon hearing John's requests, Audile's face lit up with a broad smile as he enthusiastically replied, "Of course, my lord! Just give me your orders, and I will ensure everything is taken care of. After all, it's not every day we get a generous client like you; even sending a few extra items would be worthwhile."
At that moment, Audile's eyes sparkled as if he had just thought of a brilliant idea. He continued excitedly, "My esteemed lord, I also plan to prepare two experienced fishermen for you! If there happens to be a river flowing near your territory, you'll be able to enjoy fresh fish at any time! Rest assured, these fishermen will be our little gift to you."
John was quite pleased with Audile's thoughtful suggestion and nodded in agreement. "Yes, that's excellent! Please arrange everything as soon as possible and make sure those serfs are ready; I’ll be taking them with me shortly."
After concluding their discussion, John quickly stood up and hurriedly made his way out. The courtyard was filled with an unpleasant odor that had become unbearable over time. Initially, sitting near the incense burner had masked some of the stench, but now even his specially enhanced body struggled against the pungent smell.
In Binhai Town's Salty Fish Village, today marked the arrival of their new lord. Contrary to what John had imagined, this village was not like those clustered northern settlements from his past life; instead, it was scattered across three farming plots with the lord's residence centrally located. A small river flowed in front of his home, while to the southwest lay a beach that led directly to the sea.
Ding ding ding! Ding ding ding!
An elder in the village struck a gong hanging from a large tree at the center of the village, prompting all the villagers to rush over.
The villagers anxiously watched the approaching troops, their minds racing with thoughts about why these people were here and fervently hoping they weren't there to collect taxes.
John stood on a hillside observing the sparse crowd before him with some confusion. Was this really it? There were indeed too few people—only slightly over a hundred—many of whom were young children. The memories from his past life reminded him that very few serfs or commoners lived long enough to grow old.
The only elder remaining in the village, Mai Dao, cautiously knelt at John's feet. "Noble lord," he said reverently, "everyone from Salty Fish Village is here; those who survived the orc raid are gathered before you."
John quickly helped the elder up; regardless of his noble status, his upbringing made it difficult for him to accept such deference from an elder.
Mai Dao stumbled slightly as he stood but was too proud to allow John to assist him further. "I can manage on my own, my lord."
