He did not immediately engage in conversation with Audile, but instead walked over to a nearby chair and sat down leisurely. Once settled, he spoke calmly and unhurriedly.
"Are you the person in charge here? I wonder what fine goods you have available?"
Upon hearing this, Audile couldn't help but ponder internally. He scrutinized the man before him, John, but found it difficult to ascertain his background based solely on his attire. If he were a noble, his clothing seemed somewhat off; yet if he were a wealthy merchant, the fabric was rather ordinary. However, John exuded a faint but chilling aura of menace—could he be an officer from the military? Damn it, the recently departed Madelu hadn’t revealed anything about John's identity.
At a loss, Audile cautiously replied, "My lord, may I ask what type of slaves you are specifically looking for? While I cannot boast that we have everything, we do possess some common varieties."
John slowly articulated his request. "Oh, I see you are part of the Chamber of Commerce. I would like to acquire some skilled individuals, such as blacksmiths."
Blacksmiths posed a challenge for Audile. Do not underestimate the profession; blacksmiths are skilled artisans who are highly valued in any territory. If one were to exist in a domain, they would be treated like treasure. Not only did human nobles lack blacksmiths, but even the orc tribes had few.
In ancient Western beliefs, blacksmiths were often associated with dark sorcery; they were thought to possess divine powers capable of extracting Wu Lan from minerals.
"My lord is joking," Audile said. "If we had blacksmiths, they would have long been purchased by the nobles."
John was merely probing for information and asked casually, "What about carpenters or stonemasons?"
"Yes, yes! We definitely have those!" Audile exclaimed with a broad smile. "We have not only skilled stonemasons and carpenters but even female slaves available. Would you like to take a look?" He was secretly speculating about the identity of this guest. Although he couldn't determine who John was exactly, he believed that men's desires were generally similar.
Coughing lightly upon hearing "female slaves," John felt a bit embarrassed and quickly waved his hand. "Oh dear, what kind of joke is that! I'm a perfectly decent person." In truth, had it been another time, he might have been curious enough to take a glance—after all, arriving in this new world filled him with fascination for various things and an urge to critique them. However, given that Redman had mentioned plans to bring his sister back home, John felt it best not to complicate matters.
"Well then, let’s skip the introduction of female slaves for now. Instead, I’ll need four carpenters—experienced and skilled ones; then two masons; we can’t build houses without them; next two grooms who can take good care of horses; and two cobblers since my subordinates’ shoes are wearing out badly. Additionally, I’ll need four leatherworkers to handle all leather goods; finally, a weaver to ensure everyone has comfortable clothing. Oh right! Don’t forget a brewer as well—fine wine is one of life’s great pleasures." John methodically listed the types and quantities of personnel he required.
Audile listened attentively while nodding repeatedly, realizing that this customer was likely sent by some newly appointed lord to procure manpower. With this understanding, he felt emboldened to promote other goods.
"My lord," he suggested eagerly, "would you consider hiring some cooks and bakers? This way, your lord's household could enjoy delicious meals and freshly baked bread every day."
"We also have plenty of serfs available if you wish to increase your labor force—they're quite good options! Furthermore, if you're concerned about security in your territory, you might want to hire some strong mercenaries; they would certainly ensure safety."
