On the hillside, just as John had expected, there were more than a dozen backpacks, each about half a person tall, lying on the ground.
Looking at so many backpacks, John quickly called one of the Militia members to go back and fetch more people. "Hurry up and bring some folks over," he instructed.
After quite a bit of effort, John finally managed to transport all these items back.
"Back already?"
"Yeah."
"Let’s go."
Redman didn’t look back at Lyd’s grave as they headed to their temporary encampment. The so-called encampment was merely a few unburned houses.
"Boss, the rewards from the Militia have been distributed. This is our haul," John said, pointing to a pile of items.
Redman walked around to take a look, getting a rough idea of what was there. "Let’s hear the details."
"We took down seventeen dead Wolf Mounts, one Kodo Beast, ten Orc Warriors, seventeen Wolf Riders, and also the corpse of that Transcendent you killed." John flipped through the papers in his hand and continued, "There are thirteen sets of armor that are somewhat usable, but as for weapons, there’s hardly anything left; most of them are destroyed."
"That’s to be expected. After the fire and another tough battle, not much would remain," Redman thought it was better than he had anticipated.
John didn’t place much importance on those items; for him, the biggest prize was those backpacks. "I found these backpacks that the Orcs had hidden on the hillside. There are three full backpacks of Silver Coins—estimated to be around twelve or thirteen thousand Silver Coins—and a small pouch of gold coins, which I’m quite familiar with—there are seven of them. The pouch also contains quite a few gemstones and pearls. The rest of the backpacks are filled with jerky."
"Oh, and there’s also a blackened stone wrapped separately in cloth."
He took out the stone from his backpack.
"Magic Crystal?" John questioned, puzzled by Redman's words. Although he knew that knights existed in this world, it was his first time hearing the concept of a Magic Crystal. It was rare enough that this world also had magical beasts and sorcerers. (He truly had no idea, considering his low status; the original owner was merely a Serf who later joined a Mercenary group. What could a Bear Mercenary Group possibly know?)
"What is that?"
The former Redman would not have explained, but ever since he acknowledged John as his brother, he had become more open.
"The Magic Crystal comes from magical beasts. Wild creatures in nature may mutate due to magical energy or consume rare treasures, which can turn them into magical beasts. Becoming a magical beast means achieving Transcendence."
"Then this must be worth a lot?" John instinctively measured the value of the Magic Crystal in terms of money.
"Usually, this one is just an ordinary Magic Crystal, probably worth about four gold coins."
"How much! Goodness." John exclaimed. "A soldier would take three or four years of saving without eating or drinking to accumulate that much. It's too valuable!"
"What use does it have?" John asked curiously.
Redman took it and examined it closely. "I’m not too sure either; I just know that every region's Magic Tower collects these things. If you hand them over, you not only get gold coins but also various potion rewards."
"Magic Tower? Do sorcerers really exist?"
John had heard rumors about sorcerers in taverns, often dismissing them as jokes since there were no signs of any sorcerers in his previous small town.
"Boss, do you know what sorcerers are like?"
Redman felt a bit speechless. Did John really think he was all-knowing? He wasn't aware of everything; after all, he was just the youngest son of the White Family, and many family secrets were not disclosed to him.
