Hearing the word "Transcendent," John could only feign ignorance, shaking his head frantically.
Seeing John's confusion, Lai Gen had no choice but to change his approach. "Let me put it this way: the guests we have this time are extremely valuable."
"Then I’ll keep it simple. As usual, four dishes and a soup; I’ll start cooking now." John turned to grab a knife, ready to prepare the meal.
Lai Gen quickly stopped him. "What do you mean four dishes and a soup? I told you, we have distinguished guests. It should be ten dishes and two soups, no less!"
"If you say so, then I’ll make it ten. These guests are indeed precious."
Still feeling uneasy, Lai Gen reminded him once more before leaving, "Make sure to put your heart into it. The guests will arrive in the evening. If anything goes wrong, your life won't be enough to pay for it."
"Don't worry, Lai Gen. I’ve never messed up when cooking."
Watching Lai Gen leave, John suppressed his inner turmoil. Even if he wanted to inquire about "Transcendent," he had to focus on the task at hand; otherwise, he could really lose his life.
"This dish is braised pork, this one is seaweed egg drop soup, this is fish-flavored shredded pork, and this is candied sweet potatoes."
After introducing the dishes, Captain Poland waved his left hand lightly. "Alright, Little John, this jug of wine is for you. You can leave now; we don’t need you here anymore."
"Yes, Captain."
Taking the wine jug, John stepped backward out of the tent. He felt a sense of relief; he had finally passed this hurdle.
Glancing sideways, he saw Lai Gen chatting and drinking with the soldiers brought by James outside the tent. Remembering what had been said about "Transcendent" at noon, he approached with the fine wine in hand.
"Lai Gen Ge, what are you eating? Let me join!"
Initially displeased that John was coming over to take some meat, Lai Gen's expression brightened when he saw the wine jug in John's hand. His eyes turned into slits as he smiled.
"Come sit down, Little John! We just roasted a leg of lamb; eat with us!"
"Haha, then I’ll gladly accept your invitation."
Handing the wine jug over to Lai Gen's embrace, John used a small knife to cut a piece of meat and popped it into his mouth.
After three rounds of drinks, John began to steer the conversation toward more specific inquiries about "Transcendent."
"Lai Gen Ge, why aren’t you all in the tent? I only saw Captain and Brother Macario along with two strangers inside. With so many dishes, you have enough to eat!"
Lai Gen grabbed a handful of peanuts, popping them into his mouth one by one, savoring each bite as he spoke.
"You, truly, are just a small-town person with no experience. Only the Transcendent can eat in a tent like this; we’re lucky to have lamb legs to eat."
Finally hearing what he wanted to know, he quickly pressed on. "Transcendent, Lai Gen Ge, you’ve mentioned this term several times. What exactly is a Transcendent?"
With the effects of the wine kicking in and feeling buoyed by John's praise, Lai Gen didn't hesitate to elaborate. "Take our Captain for example; that’s a Transcendent. He belongs to the knight lineage."
"Knight?"
"Yes, they practice a special technique called the Knight Breathing Technique. Once they achieve a minor success in this breathing method, they can awaken their Knight Seed. At that point, they become a quasi-knight, also known as a Half-Step Transcendent. When they ignite the Knight's Flame, they can step into the realm of the Transcendent. Once someone becomes a Transcendent, their lifespan extends by decades compared to ordinary people."
Lai Gen looked enviously at the tent across from him. Who wouldn’t want to be a Transcendent? They understood all too well what being a Transcendent represented for mercenaries like them.
