About a week ago, there was a high school student who reportedly didn’t do well on the college entrance exam and, in a moment of despair, jumped off. It’s really tough for students these days. My younger brother is going into his senior year this year, and the pressure is immense. A nearby armed police officer shook his head helplessly.
But I remember a guy whose wife had just given birth to a son; they were preparing for the baby's full-month celebration when he suddenly jumped off the Cheqiao Bridge for some unknown reason.
“Let’s go down and take a look!”
“What’s there to see?”
The river was calm now; it seemed like something was about to happen, and we needed to resolve it before anyone jumped in.
“Right, right, the Seventeen Bridges! I’ll go notify the other teams and tell them to stay alert.” The armed police officer turned and ran toward the patrol car.
Notifying them is fine, but it won’t make much difference. Those who truly want to die can’t be stopped, and those who don’t want to die have already been targeted by the water ghosts; the problem can only be solved at its source.
In truth, they knew that despite hundreds of armed police guarding the bridge every day, some people still managed to jump off. It wasn’t that they weren’t vigilant; it was just that those targeted by the water ghosts couldn’t escape.
The armed police officer who went to notify the others also reported on Yan Kongyue and their superior's identities.
A few armed police led them toward the other side of the bridge. One tall young man asked, “If there really are water ghosts, why don’t we see them while we’re on duty every day?”
Yan Kongyue tilted his head to look at him, his rosy lips curling into a smile. “Because you are embodiments of justice. Your uniforms, your police badges, and your authority have a deterrent effect on those monsters. The water ghosts can’t confuse you.”
“Oh, I see!”

“Yeah, it makes me even prouder!”

As they spoke, they had already reached the stairs at the end of the bridge.
"Hey, Lin Lang, why don't we wait a bit before heading down? Our leader has sent two teams over to support us; they should be arriving soon."
Lin Lang looked at Yan Kongyue.
