I am a Ferryman of the River Styx, responsible for ferrying the Undead across the River Styx.
Any Undead arriving at the River Styx who wishes to board the boat must pay a gold coin as ferry fare; this is an unwritten rule.
Every day, I shuttle back and forth in the gloomy River Styx, and it's quite boring to be honest. After all, I do the same repetitive things day after day, without any change.
Although I have seen all kinds of Undead, I have become so accustomed to it that I can handle almost any situation with ease.
However, if we were to talk about an impressive special case, it would make me unable to resist thinking of a recent encounter with someone—
That day, I docked the ferry boat by the riverside as usual, waiting for the deceased who needed to cross the river to arrive.
Before long, a deceased person approached the riverbank, looking around in confusion.
When the other person saw me, they first paused for a moment, then pointed at me with a puzzled expression and said:
"Are you... Charon? The one from Greek mythology? Why are you here? This shouldn't be the Western underworld, right?"
"This is the River Styx, just a relay station, with no specific area boundaries. I am the Ferryman of the River Styx, with no specific name, but it doesn't matter if you want to call me that." I replied as usual.
There are often deceased who ask such questions, I think it's probably due to different regional beliefs.
It is said that in some places we are referred to as "Charon," but we are simply the Ferryman of the River Styx, nothing more.
Upon hearing my response, the deceased indeed showed an awkward smile.
"Um...sorry, after all, the traditional customs in my impression did not mention such a scene, so I feel a bit confused, wondering if I went to the wrong place..."
"Don't worry, it's your first time crossing the river, so it's understandable that you don't know." I didn't mind, just extended my hand to him in a formal manner. "ferry boat fare, one gold coin."
"Eh?" The deceased was indeed taken aback for a moment and quickly reached into his pockets. However, even after searching his entire body, he still found nothing.
"Um... I'm sorry, it seems I don't have any money on me..." He maintained an awkward smile, looking somewhat flustered as he scratched his head.
"It's okay, you'll have it when your relatives provide for you." I withdrew my hand and comforted softly, "Perhaps you arrived too early, after all, there is a certain time gap for the transition of relatives' support. Before that, you can wait here first."
Some souls do not deliberately linger in the world after death, but choose to go directly to the River Styx, which is when this kind of situation occurs. This is a normal phenomenon, so I am not surprised.
"Is that so..." For some reason, a hint of indescribable expression appeared on the face of the deceased, but then he smiled. "Well then, I'll take a rest for now."
After saying that, he chose a pile of rocks near the beach, leaned against it, and sat down to rest.
Before long, another person named deceased came to take the boat, so I took them away first.
