"Why did you tell her that?"
I frowned immediately; I didn't like anyone knowing about such matters. If it weren't for needing Zheng Yu's help to find Linna, I wouldn't even tell Zheng Yu.
"She's a nice girl," Zheng Yu said, looking at me with a probing tone.
"I'm tired and want to sleep for a while."
I interrupted Zheng Yu. Lu Ying is indeed a good girl, but I can't give her anything; my heart belongs only to Linna.
"Is Dong Ge looking down on Lu Ying because of her illness?"
"Zheng Yu! I'm really tired!"
I frowned again, and Zheng Yu sighed helplessly, nodding before standing up and turning to leave. I sighed in resignation and said, "Lu Ying is a good girl in every way; it's just that I'm the one who doesn't understand. As her brother, you should advise her well."
"Okay, I understand. Dong Ge, don't blame me for meddling. If I don't help her fight for it, that girl might end up resenting me."
Zheng Yu smiled as he stood there. I smiled back and nodded, watching as he left my office.
After Zheng Yu left, I finally fell asleep after a night of tossing and turning. The day was about to begin with a trip to Jinshan Jiao, and I needed to ensure I was well-rested.
In my dream, it wasn't the usual one of running on the police academy's playground; instead, I found myself back home, watching cartoons with Linna.
When I woke up, it was already night. To my surprise, I saw Lu Ying sitting in my office chair.
"What are you doing here?"
I sat up and asked Lu Ying, who smiled at me and said, "I came to see you off."
I chuckled softly.
"What's wrong? Don't want to see me? Is it because of your girlfriend that you're upset? How did your girlfriend even find out about me? I really have no idea."
Lu Ying immediately explained, her eyes showing some sincerity, but deep down I could sense a hint of panic. I knew that Lu Ying had always lacked confidence around me; she felt she couldn't compare to Linna.
But really, what differences were there among the three of us?
I smiled at her and said, "It's not your fault; it's mine for keeping it from her."
"But you did it for her own good," Lu Ying replied.
"That's true; I really did it for her sake—didn't want her to be angry or worried. But I'm also selfish; I'm afraid she'll make a scene."
Regardless of the reasons, hiding it from her was my mistake; otherwise, there wouldn't have been any misunderstandings.
I smiled and said, "Lu Ying laughed after hearing that; it was a smile of appreciation. You really are a good man. You can understand others from their perspective."
I smiled again and looked at Lu Ying, saying, "How about this? I'll tell you a secret that no one else knows."
"What secret?" Lu Ying asked me.
I replied slowly, "Actually, like you, I am also an orphan."
"What?" Lu Ying was taken aback.
No one knows that I am an orphan. I was adopted by my current parents, who have no biological children of their own. They have kept this a secret from me all along.
I had never mentioned this to anyone before, but I had known for a long time. When I was in my teens, my adoptive father intended to tell me about my origins, but I overheard him being stopped by my sister, Xi Qinqin.
My adoptive father has always been strict with me. During my childhood, I worked hard in school to earn his praise. When I learned that I was not his biological child, I felt even more grateful to them for raising me and not letting me grow up in an orphanage. This made me want their approval even more; I longed to see their satisfied smiles.
That was the only way I could repay them.
Finally, as my adoptive father wished, I got accepted into the police academy. He always taught me to be just and righteous. At first, I thought he was a righteous man who wanted me to be like him.
But later, when I became an undercover agent and got to know the gang leader, I casually looked into my origins.
To my shock, my biological father had died at the hands of my adoptive father! My adoptive father killed him in the name of justice.
According to my investigation, my biological father was a fallen man who used to own a small factory but lost everything due to gambling. My sister Xi Qinqin left shortly after giving birth to me, leaving me with a degenerate drunkard.
My biological father drank heavily every day and eventually turned to robbery when he ran out of money. He committed several crimes and even took a life. One day during a robbery, he crossed paths with my adoptive father. They fought, and in the struggle, my biological father was killed by him.
My biological father was a murderer who was accidentally killed by my adoptive father while committing a crime. My adoptive father was acquitted, but deep down, I knew he felt guilty. He didn’t want to kill anyone; he knew that this murderer had an infant son left behind—an orphan. For some reason, he had no children of his own and decided to adopt me.
Thus, my adoptive father raised me with the values of justice and goodness. He wanted me to understand his actions back then by becoming a police officer.
"Do you hate him?" Lu Ying asked after I finished speaking.
I smiled. "Why would I hate him? My adoptive father is a good man. Though he was strict with me, he never did anything wrong."
I continued with a smile, "A man like my biological father wouldn’t have lived long anyway; sooner or later, he would have been caught by the police and sentenced to death. I have no feelings for that faceless man; rationally speaking, his death was entirely his own doing."
"Then we should congratulate him for raising you into someone who understands right from wrong," Lu Ying said with a smile.
Hearing this made me smile helplessly as well. I didn’t say anything more. So when I learned about Lu Ying's background, it pained me deeply; I couldn’t bear the thought of her putting herself in danger because her story mirrored mine so closely.
You are no different.
I smiled, and Lu Ying smiled back. We chatted a lot, and in that moment, it felt like we had more in common than ever. I could no longer see a hint of insecurity in Lu Ying's eyes because we were alike in many ways.
If Lu Ying were the child of a happy family, she wouldn’t have encountered Zheng Yu, wouldn’t have aspired to be a police officer, and wouldn’t have met me.
If Linna’s father hadn’t died and remained the lofty chairman of Tian Ye Group, then Linna wouldn’t have crossed paths with me either.
And if I didn’t have my own background and experiences, perhaps my father wouldn’t have raised me with the ideals of justice, nor would he have encouraged me to become a police officer. I wouldn’t have gone undercover, wouldn’t have come to Kyoto to struggle, and wouldn’t have met all the people I know now.
Perhaps this is fate.
That night, I talked a lot with Lu Ying. She seemed more lively and optimistic than before, but this experience had also aged her. I loved Linna; she said that as she was leaving.
“Xiang Dong, I hope we can be good friends for life. Also, thank you for sharing your story with me.”
“Don’t mention it,” I replied with a smile. After she left, I found a hotel to spend the night. I didn’t want to go home because every time I did, I couldn’t help but think of Linna.
I still had things to do and endless challenges waiting for me to conquer!
The next day, after sleeping well both during the day and at night, I felt fully energized. Liu Zi had also chosen his subordinates, and we were ready to set off.
Before departing, I went to visit Wan Fei at the hospital. I didn’t visit Liu Sen; his situation had stirred quite a bit of trouble. With over ten men involved along with one woman, and some people deliberately stirring the pot, it had made headlines and he wouldn’t be getting out anytime soon.
“Dong Ge, don’t worry about it. I’ll take care of your sister-in-law’s situation. Once there’s news about her, I’ll make sure to explain everything clearly.”
Before I left, Zheng Yu whispered to me, “Others still don’t know that Linna has already run away.”
“Okay.”
I smiled and patted Zheng Yu on the shoulder as we set off for the airport! Wan Fei couldn’t come to see me off due to his rib injury; instead, it was Zheng Yu, Fang Ying, and Northwest Tiger who came.
I wasn’t surprised that Northwest Tiger showed up; after all, Fang Ying would definitely return. He leaned toward me during this time to show that we had a good relationship.
“Haha! Brother Xiang! Wishing you great success!” Northwest Tiger laughed heartily outside the airport.
I chuckled but didn’t respond directly. Instead, I turned to Fang Ying and said, “Don’t worry, Fang Zhu Master; I will handle this matter well.”
“Hmm, I believe you. Have a safe trip.”
Fang Ying smiled beautifully and coolly without any unnecessary words.
I nodded and turned around to lead Liu Zi and our group into the airport.
