"Ah, I think I'll pass on that. I have a few things to take care of later."
I smiled and declined Northwest Tiger's invitation. He looked momentarily surprised but quickly laughed and said, "Well, let's do it another day! Brother Xiang, you must make time for me next time! Haha!"
Northwest Tiger chuckled heartily, patting me on the shoulder as if he didn't mind my refusal at all. I smiled back, bid him farewell, and left with my little brother.
"Brother Dong, Northwest Tiger seems to be quite interested in you. Why did you turn him down? Won't they team up against us?"
Once we got into the car, Liuzi asked me. I chuckled and replied, "Have you ever heard the saying? It's not the god-like opponent you should fear, but the pig-like teammate. Northwest Tiger is definitely a pitfall."
"Are you saying Northwest Tiger is too foolish? How can you tell?" Liuzi looked puzzled after hearing my words. Before I could respond, Zheng Yu spoke up.
"Northwest Tiger is definitely not foolish; in fact, it's quite the opposite. I sense he’s both rough and meticulous—otherwise, how could Chen Ming have failed to eliminate him until now? I think Brother Dong doesn’t want to ally with Northwest Tiger because he feels it’s unnecessary. And it’s not that Brother Dong thinks of him as a pig; rather, Northwest Tiger is a two-faced smiling tiger. Having such a teammate is even more dangerous than having a pig teammate."
Zheng Yu smiled at me, and I nodded in agreement. "Exactly! But it's not entirely comprehensive."
"Northwest Tiger may be rough yet meticulous; calling him a two-faced smiling tiger isn’t far off either. If I have to constantly guard against his schemes while collaborating with him, then I don’t need such a teammate at all. Right now, it’s not about forming alliances."
There’s only one main factor in play here.
That is Miss Fang!
Miss Fang has just taken office and despises internal strife the most! If those three families had the guts to unite against me, would Miss Fang just stand by and watch?
Clearly not!
Miss Fang would fully support me! Moreover, she would take action to eliminate them. In that case, I would be the biggest winner. So even if there’s going to be internal conflict, I must strike back first! If I align myself with Northwest Tiger and present a united front against others, I would lose Miss Fang's favor and become her target for suppression!
So why should I do that?
Miss Fang has clearly shown her support for me; all I need to do is wait and see how things unfold.
"That makes sense. And isn’t it true that now with Miss Fang in charge, she will definitely support her own people? So we should just observe the situation and protect ourselves, right?" Liuzi continued to inquire; he seemed to be learning quite a bit during this time.
"Exactly! This can also be seen as self-preservation. Miss Fang will certainly want to support her own people, but have you seen anyone she considers her own yet?"
I asked Liuzi with a smile. He paused for a moment before realizing the truth: "Not really!"
Miss Fang doesn’t have any loyalists or confidants within Tian Ye Gang! While she does want to build her own power base, it doesn’t rule out the possibility of converting her current subordinates into her trusted aides and loyalists! Until more suitable candidates appear, Miss Fang may not remove anyone from their position.
"Right! There isn’t anyone! From Miss Fang's attitude towards Brother Dong, it seems she intends to cultivate you as her confidant!"
Liuzai suddenly realized and said, "I understand now." I smiled and replied, "So now that they are fighting among themselves, I won't get involved. I'll just wait and see who dares to cause me trouble!"
After the meeting, I arrived at the South District Security Company. The North District Security Company was still in operation, but they could only pick up some minor tasks that I was unwilling to do; they simply couldn't compete with me. Although I was now nominally the leader of Tiger Hall, I was still the boss of the South District in practice. Liuzai continued to manage Tiger Hall, and I still wandered around the Security Company every day.
Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, a week had passed since Fang Ying became the Kyoto Master. During this week, Northwest Tiger had called me several times inviting me to dinner, trying to curry favor with me. But I had declined each time. Northwest Tiger wasn't angry; he understood my value. In the Kyoto Headquarters, I was considered one of Fang Ying's closest allies. He couldn't afford to offend me; he could only try to win me over.
Meanwhile, the East District and North District were relatively peaceful. Liu Haoran and I had quarreled, but he wasn't foolish enough to seek trouble with me or start a conflict. The first reason was that I was favored by Fang Ying; the second was that I was unpredictable! He knew that if he provoked me, I would escalate things beyond control, and he wouldn't be able to handle it.
I hadn't been officially promoted yet, but Fang Ying had visited my company a few times and told me that sooner or later, I would become the South District Boss. However, she noted that I hadn't done anything noteworthy yet since it had only been a week since the last incident. It was clear to me what she meant: Fang Ying wanted me to show some initiative so she could reward me appropriately and let me take charge of the Southern District.
But what did it matter whether I was officially recognized as the South District Boss? Who regarded me as Hu Tang Zhu? In the Southern District, I was still the one calling the shots!
A week later.
Dong Ge and Qian Cun Jin had remained silent; what could they possibly be plotting? In the Security Company office, Zheng Yu looked at me and asked. After hearing his question, I smiled and replied, "Can they? Of course not!" I knew Qian Cun Jin's son Qian Peng had been diagnosed with a comminuted fracture of his right knee! It truly made me furious—he had become crippled because of a single incident!
He only had this one son! Now he must hate me so much that he grinds his teeth in anger! He probably spends his days at home making voodoo dolls of me! He would certainly want nothing more than for me to be dead. However, not long ago, Chen Ming's incident had also splattered mud on him. Although it didn't stick, I suspected Fang Ying had warned Qian Cun Jin that if I died now, he would be the prime suspect. For now, he wouldn't dare make a move against me.
I laughed and said that even if he dared to act against me, he wouldn't stand a chance. He couldn't outsmart me; his only option would be to hire someone to assassinate me. But ever since Liu Sen arrived, his thirty trained subordinates had been secretly protecting me. What could he possibly do?
I actually hoped he would send an assassin who would then be caught by my thirty subordinates! That way, I'd have a chance to take him down too!
Indeed, with Miss Fang backing Dong Ge now, he could rest easy. But this situation had its pros and cons; now that Miss Fang had become the Kyoto Master, it would be very difficult for him to climb up to that position himself.
Zheng Yu laughed as I fell silent after hearing this. This was indeed one of my biggest worries lately. With Miss Fang taking such good care of me, morally and rationally speaking, I couldn't betray her like I did with Chen Ming; that would weigh heavily on my conscience.
Even if I could overcome myself, it would be impossible to bring down the Fang Ying faction from its favored position under Helmsman, unless Fang Ying were to die unexpectedly!
"What do you mean?" I asked.
I looked at Zheng Yu, who smiled after hearing my question and said, "I don't mean anything in particular. I just want to remind you, Dong Ge, that sometimes loyalty is just an illusion. She only treats you well because she lacks trusted subordinates. After all, they are the ones who killed Linna's father. I don’t want you to be swayed by loyalty and lose your judgment."
I fell silent after hearing this.
"You’re right. Thank you for the reminder, but that’s a matter for the future. At least for now, Fang Ying poses no threat to us."
I replied to Zheng Yu, "Even if Fang Ying were to fall from power, I still wouldn’t become the Kyoto Master. As long as she remains in power, she can protect me. If she loses her position, how can I know if the next Helmsman will look out for me?"
"Well, Dong Ge, you’re a leader. I thought you’d get angry at what I said," Zheng Yu chuckled. He knew I was a man of loyalty, but it was undeniable that he was right. If Fang Ying had her own trusted subordinates, she wouldn’t be looking out for me; then what would a little appreciation mean?
I laughed as well and joked, "So if I don’t listen to you, does that mean I’m not a leader anymore? What would you do then?"
"What else can I do? If you don’t listen, I’ll just report it to your sister-in-law," he replied with a grin.
I frowned immediately! Report to Linna? That would be disastrous!
I didn’t know what was going on, but ever since Linna came from my hometown, she seemed very unhappy and often took her frustrations out on me. I even suspected that she might have discovered something about Lu Ying.
For the past few days, I had been trying to cheer her up. I also tested her mood, but Linna just brushed me off with some excuse and didn’t tell me why she was feeling down.
At first, I believed her; after all, Linna was straightforward. If she had found out something, she would definitely confront me and give me a hard time. It didn’t make sense for her to stay at my place while just giving me the cold shoulder.
"You’re quite cunning!"
I scoffed and said that naturally, I wouldn’t share my issues with Zheng Yu. If he were to run off and report me now, I’d be in deep trouble.
"Not too bad, just a little," Zheng Yu chuckled. Then we discussed many upcoming matters. For now, it was best not to act while waiting for an opportunity. My position as the South District Boss wasn’t too big or too small; it allowed me some time to observe the situation and strengthen my own power. No matter when it was, building up strength was never a mistake.
After finishing our discussion with Zheng Yu, it was already late. I bought a big bag of snacks on my way home. Over the past few days, I had bought quite a few gifts for Linna, but she seemed uninterested in them all; the only thing she would eat were the snacks.
