In another corner of Zhao Mansion, Xiu Er and Cui Er whispered to each other. “The master and mistress haven’t left their room for several days now. Could something be troubling them?”
Xiu Er frowned with concern and said, “Cui Er, we need to find a way to figure out what’s going on. The master and mistress have always been affectionate; it’s unusual for them to have meals sent to their room.”
Cui Er nodded in agreement. “Yes, I heard that the master has been practicing an Advanced Cultivation Technique recently. Could there be an issue with his Gongfa? We need to find an opportunity to check on them.”
After pondering for a moment, Xiu Er suggested, “Let’s do this: tonight while they are resting, we’ll quietly eavesdrop outside their room. But we must be careful not to let them notice us.”
Cui Er agreed with a nod, and the two began preparing for their nighttime investigation of Zhao Mansion. They tiptoed through the courtyard until they reached the door of the master and mistress's room. Through the window, they faintly heard some voices.
Xiu Er and Cui Er held their breath and listened intently. They heard the master asking about the mistress's progress in her cultivation. The mistress replied, “I feel some changes occurring but still need more time to fully grasp it.”
Exchanging glances filled with confusion, they decided to continue eavesdropping in hopes of gathering more clues. Just as they were focused intently on listening, they suddenly heard a noise that startled them into hiding.
It turned out that one of the guards patrolling had discovered them. The guard asked why they were there, and Xiu Er cleverly replied, “We were worried about the master and mistress, so we came to check.” Seeing they were just maids from the household, the guard didn’t ask further questions and let them return inside.
