Upon hearing the system task update, Ling Xue felt a surge of strong determination within her. She understood the significance of this mission; it was not only to help Pan Mei completely escape her predicament but also to prevent more people from falling victim to the Naked Loan Company.
Ling Xue turned to Pan Mei, her gaze filled with resolve and encouragement. "Pan Mei, don't worry. I will handle this. All you need to do is rest and believe that we will succeed." Tears shimmered in Pan Mei's eyes as she nodded gently.
The next day, sunlight streamed through the clouds, illuminating the earth, yet it could not dispel the tension and gravity in Ling Xue's heart. Dressed in simple student attire and carrying an old-fashioned backpack, she arrived early at the designated meeting spot with the Naked Loan Company personnel.
It was a secluded café, its worn sign swaying slightly in the wind, creaking ominously. Inside, the lighting was dim, and a musty atmosphere lingered. Ling Xue chose a corner seat, gripping her backpack straps tightly as her eyes frequently darted toward the entrance, her heart pounding like a drum.
As time passed, the café door creaked open slowly, revealing a thin man with a cunning glint in his eyes. He wore an ill-fitting suit, his greasy hair slicked back against his scalp, and an unsettling smile plastered on his face. The man scanned the café before finally settling his gaze on Ling Xue.
He sauntered over to sit across from her, crossing his legs casually as he lit a cigarette. The smoke curled upwards, obscuring his features slightly. He squinted at Ling Xue like a sly fox eyeing its prey.
His gaze lingered for a moment on Ling Xue's youthful face, revealing a hint of skepticism and calculation. He noticed her cheeks flushed with nervousness and her tightly pressed lips; the corners of his mouth lifted slightly, as if mocking her innocence. Then his eyes roamed over her student outfit—worn and simple—which led him to conclude that she came from an ordinary background.
A flicker of smugness crossed his face as he envisioned yet another easy target to manipulate. His gaze shifted back to Ling Xue’s hands gripping her backpack straps tightly; he noticed her fingers trembling slightly, betraying her inner turmoil. Raising an eyebrow, he felt even more assured of his assessment. Finally, he locked eyes with Ling Xue, attempting to extract more information from her expression. His gaze sharpened and focused as if trying to penetrate her very soul.
"You’re the student looking for a loan?" His voice was hoarse and low, laced with an almost imperceptible threat.
Ling Xue trembled slightly but quickly steadied herself. She forced her voice to sound calm yet firm: "Yes, I urgently need money."
The man chuckled coldly and exhaled a puff of smoke. "What collateral do you have?"
Feigning nervousness, Ling Xue lowered her head and replied, "I... I don’t have any collateral; I really need the money."
A greedy smile spread across his face. "You can still get a loan without collateral; however, the interest will be quite high. Can you accept that?"
Ling Xue hesitated for a moment before nodding slowly. The man produced a contract and slid it across the table toward her. "Sign this contract, and you’ll receive your money."
With trembling hands, Ling Xue picked up the contract and examined it closely. It was riddled with traps and unfair clauses; she knew this was crucial evidence she needed to gather. Pretending to be resigned, she signed it and then asked, "When will I receive the money?"
The man’s smile widened in satisfaction. "Soon enough; first, you need to take some photos as collateral."
Ling Xue's heart tightened; she knew this was a necessary step. She followed him into a dimly lit room equipped with a camera and various backdrops. The man instructed Ling Xue to stand in front of one of the backdrops before starting to take pictures. She tried to remain calm and appear composed while secretly observing her surroundings for anything that could serve as evidence.
