Sang Yu looked at the photo of the perfectly matched couple and felt genuinely happy for her cousin. Now, Grandpa and Grandma, along with Uncle San, could finally rest easy. Every time they returned home, Grandpa and Grandma would nag a bit about her cousin.
Sang Wenqing leaned in front of Sister Sang and asked, "Mom, are you satisfied with the daughter-in-law I found for you?"
"Very satisfied! Haha, beautiful things are always pleasing to the eye," Sister Sang replied. Sang Wenqing's girlfriend had a lovely appearance, which made Sister Sang's fondness for her soar to new heights. At last, she found her son somewhat agreeable; he had finally done something right.
However, she added, "When did you even find this girl? Why didn’t you tell us? You made us worry for nothing. Now that you have a girlfriend, you still keep it a secret. You have no idea how much your father and I have been losing sleep over this!"
"Mom, that's unfair! I just started dating her; it's only been a month. I wanted to give you a surprise, so I didn’t mention it," Sang Wenqing defended himself.
Then the adults surrounded him with questions about his girlfriend: Where is she from? What does she do? A whole list of inquiries followed.
Sang Yu, Sang Xia, and Sang Wenjie sat quietly on the bench, munching on sunflower seeds while enjoying the gossip. It was true; other people's lives were always more interesting.
However, as they chatted, the topic suddenly shifted to Sang Yu, urging her to find someone soon. They warned her that once she turned thirty, it would be too late. Feeling overwhelmed, Sang Yu made a hasty retreat.
Ah, during school they asked about grades; after graduation, they inquired about jobs; once settled in a career, they pushed for relationships; after finding someone, they pressed for marriage; and once married, they urged her to have children. After the first child came along, they would start asking about the second.
She realized that parents always had endless expectations for their children. Complete one stage and immediately be pushed into the next—when would it ever end?
Suddenly, a firecracker went off at Sang Yu's feet, startling her. Hearing laughter nearby confirmed that it was those mischievous kids trying to scare her again by throwing firecrackers at her.
These kids always seemed to have an endless supply of firecrackers. If you ran into those troublemakers, you could only consider yourself unlucky.
Sang Yu glared at the group of children from the doorway. When they scattered in all directions, she sighed in relief; she was terrified of firecrackers going off near her and always kept her distance whenever possible.
At seven-thirty in the evening, dinner was served on time. They set up a large round table in the living room facing the television, which was broadcasting the Central Television Station.
For dinner, they prepared ten dishes—a table full of food that included chicken, duck, fish, and meat—along with dumplings that were sure to be left over. There was simply too much food to finish.
"Cheers to Grandpa and Grandma! Wishing you happiness and good health! May every year bring joy!"
"Happiness!"
"Happiness!"
"Cheers!"
"Cheers!"
At eight o'clock sharp, the Spring Festival Gala began. Everyone ate while watching and discussing it. Although this year's gala couldn't compare to those of the past, it had become a tradition to watch it on New Year's Eve.
The women didn't drink; after finishing their meals early, they sat snacking on sunflower seeds and fruits while watching television and occasionally chiming in with comments.
The men drank and played games, celebrating their cousin's newfound girlfriend. Everyone was particularly happy, enjoying the lively atmosphere of the family gathering.
