"Can you check when the dishes will be served?" Lin Yue asked Jiang Han, who seemed momentarily confused.
"Huh?" Jiang Han replied, not quite catching on.
Lu Jingzhi understood that Lin Yue didn't want others to know, which only deepened his curiosity. "You should take a breather," he suggested to Jiang Han.
"Oh, I get it," Jiang Han said, realizing that they wanted him to step away so they could talk privately. He decided to be considerate and left the room.
Once Jiang Han was out of earshot, Lin Yue began, "To be honest, this is something personal about Sang Yu that I shouldn’t be sharing. If she were to tell you herself, I doubt she would."
"Therefore, as her closest friend, I think it's better that I tell you—not for your sake, but for Sang Yu's. I hope she can find happiness in the future, and you must not let her down."
"You should know how much Sang Yu liked you back in the day." After saying this, Lin Yue looked at Lu Jingzhi, her gaze carrying a meaning he found hard to decipher.
Lu Jingzhi was taken aback; memories of high school and all the things Sang Yu had done for him flooded back.
Before he could respond, Lin Yue continued, "Did you know that Sang Yu once took a year off from school?"
Lu Jingzhi's expression turned puzzled. "Took a year off? When did that happen?"
"I knew you wouldn’t know," Lin Yue said as she took a sip of her juice. "Of course Sang Yu wouldn’t tell you. If she had, you wouldn’t have come to me today."
"Why did she take a year off? Was it because of me?" Lu Jingzhi asked in shock.
Lin Yue didn’t answer his question directly but continued, "Actually, after the college entrance exams back then, Sang Yu was in a really bad state."
They talked for nearly an hour, with Lin Yue doing most of the talking while Lu Jingzhi listened intently, unsure of what to say.
After hearing Lin Yue’s words, Lu Jingzhi sat in silence for a long time. No wonder she didn’t want her sister to know; no wonder she changed the subject whenever her parents were mentioned. It must all be because of him. Her parents probably despised him by now. Feeling somewhat defeated, he rubbed his face and said to Lin Yue, "You and Jiang Han can eat together. I’ll head out now. Thank you for everything and for always being there for her."
Just as Lu Jingzhi was about to leave, Lin Yue’s voice called out from behind him. "Lu Jingzhi! This time, I hope you won’t let Sang Yu down again! She can’t take any more hurt. You don’t know what would happen if it happened again."
Lu Jingzhi halted in his tracks and turned to look into Lin Yue’s eyes. With determination in his voice, he replied, "I won’t! I won’t let her down again!"
"Let’s hope you mean it," Lin Yue said.
Without saying anything more, Lu Jingzhi walked away with firm steps. He promised himself he would never abandon her again.
Watching him leave, Lin Yue felt a sense of relief and smiled softly. "Sang Xiaoyu, this time you shouldn’t be disappointed."
Meanwhile, Jiang Han sat in the hall and noticed Lu Jingzhi hurriedly exiting. "Hey! Lu Ge hadn’t finished talking!" he exclaimed as Lu Jingzhi disappeared from view.
"What’s going on? Why is he in such a rush?"
Jiang Han returned to the private room and found Lin Yue eating alone. What happened? Where did Lu Ge go?
"You’re here? Sit down and have something to eat," Lin Yue said, gesturing to the untouched dishes on the table. "Well, it’s a bit cold, but it tastes really good. We should come back here again."
