Ling Xiaoxiao was not someone to be underestimated. Even if the so-called "Doghead Strategist" was just a title, she was still a national master, and her position carried weight. Therefore, unraveling the mystery of the Imperial Edict was not a daunting task.
However, was the the Shu Emperor getting a bit too excited?
Just look at that insatiable gaze of his, more eager than the the Yan Emperor peeking at the female historian bathing. It made her want to say—don't get too infatuated with me; I might just make you cough up blood.
But just as the words were on her lips, she decisively changed her tone: “Your Majesty… Your Majesty? The fan… the fan is going to break.”
As she spoke, she feigned panic, trying to break free from Shu Zhao Han's grip.
Shu Zhao Han looked down at the two feathers in his hand, his enthusiasm still evident: “If you are willing to stay by my side, I will give you any fan you desire. Paper fans, iron fans, feather fans, round fans—choose whichever you like.”
Ling Xiaoxiao felt a bit bewildered. She understood that "the emperor's heart is as deep as the ocean," but there was no need for such dramatic declarations. If it weren't for her thick skin, she would have turned beet red by now.
“Uh… Your Majesty, about the generous reward you mentioned earlier, is it… um, ah, hehe.”
She truly had no time to guess his thoughts; it was best to divert the topic and complete her task.
Shu Zhao Han slowly exhaled, calming his eager heart, and smiled: “Speak up. What do you want? Gold and silver? A title?”
It was clear he was in a good mood. After pondering for a moment, Ling Xiaoxiao decided to play along: “Your Majesty, we commoners are not greedy for wealth or power; what we seek is not something difficult for you.”
Shu Zhao Han raised an eyebrow: “A woman?”
Ling Xiaoxiao's lips twitched as she raised her hand to rub her forehead: “It's like this. We commoners have traveled through various countries and heard that the Shu Kingdom possesses a National Treasure…”
Upon hearing this, Shu Zhao Han's expression changed instantly, flipping faster than turning pages in a book. He perfectly portrayed an emperor with a capricious temperament.
His face gradually grew stern as he scoffed sarcastically: “What a claim of being ungreedy for wealth and power.”
Ling Xiaoxiao touched her feather fan and smiled innocently: “Your Majesty, please don’t misunderstand. How could someone like me possess a National Treasure? We merely wish to broaden our horizons and witness it.”
Shu Zhao Han's expression gradually softened, though it still held a hint of suspicion and vigilance. "Is that all?"
"Of course," Ling Xiaoxiao replied.
Shu Zhao Han fell silent for a moment. "Why should I show you?"
"You are the Emperor..." A sovereign's words carry weight interjected.
"Can the Emperor not change his mind?" He smiled, throwing out a challenge, then turned and returned to the dragon throne.
Ling Xiaoxiao was speechless; it was the first time she had heard an emperor say such a thing.
"However... I can give you a chance. If you answer my question, I will grant your request," Shu Zhao Han said, his gaze from above filled with scrutiny and expectation.
Ling Xiaoxiao's eyes brightened: this was her forte.
"Please, Your Majesty, pose your question." She had always excelled at answering questions, a skill honed from her mother's insistence on her studies.
"My consort Li has been in low spirits lately and wishes to see flowers bloom overnight. However, the number of blooms must be both odd and even. Do you have any good ideas?" Shu Zhao Han inquired.
Ling Xiaoxiao almost wanted to say: Isn't your consort just being difficult?
Instead, she elegantly shook her fan and replied with an air of mystery, "This is not difficult at all."
Shu Zhao Han raised an almost imperceptible smile but cautioned, "Do not speak too grandly."
Ling Xiaoxiao felt fortunate for her extensive reading; although it had been forced upon her by her mother since childhood, it proved that knowledge could indeed conquer all fears.
"Why not plant a Twin Lotus? A single plant can bloom with two flowers, serving both as single and double."
She spoke with great confidence, even lifting her chin in self-assurance.
Shu Zhao Han slowly narrowed his eyes, clearly pleased with his answer.
Ling Xiaoxiao, feeling proud, seemed to have an epiphany; he was merely testing her. Could it be that he had taken a liking to her talents and wanted... But a woman cannot serve two husbands; no, it is loyal subjects who do not serve two masters.
"Alright! I shall fulfill your request!" Shu Zhao Han declared.
Ling Xiaoxiao's heart skipped a beat. While expressing her gratitude, she subtly glanced at the bystander Scholar’s Page, who had accompanied her but had been overlooked. In an instant, the three exchanged glances in silent communication.
At that moment, Shu Zhao Han had already instructed someone to fetch the National Treasure. Ling Xiaoxiao felt a sense of relief settle in her heart, though there was still some uncertainty lingering. She thought for a moment and said, "Your Majesty, I have something else to say."
"Speak," Shu Zhao Han replied, looking quite pleased.
"Aside from wanting to catch a glimpse of the National Treasure, I would also like to ask for one more thing from Your Majesty."
"What is it?"
"A kiss from Your Majesty."
