At this moment, not far from the capital, a scholar was hurrying up the mountain, with Hei Jiao following closely behind. The scholar was one of the Jinshi candidates this time, though he ranked lower among them. He was one of those peculiar individuals connected to Destiny Energy.
Hei Jiao had initially planned to head to Black Mountain but unexpectedly discovered the scholar sneaking out of the city, so he decided to follow him. As the sky gradually darkened, the scholar finally reached the mountain's peak, panting heavily.
Hei Jiao glanced around and spotted a dilapidated temple, its purpose unclear. The scholar's face lit up with joy as he hurried inside. Hei Jiao's eyes flickered; he concealed his presence and followed him in.
As soon as the scholar entered, he knelt down and exclaimed, "Brother Lu, it’s done! I really made it onto the Golden List as a Jinshi! Haha!"
Above him stood a statue wrapped in red cloth, obscuring whatever deity it represented.
"Haha, Zhu Brother, congratulations!" A figure clad in a bright red Official Robe suddenly descended from a high platform.
The scholar quickly got to his feet. "Brother Lu, let’s go! I’ll treat you to drinks in the city."
The man in the Official Robe paused for a moment and shook his head with a wry smile. "Zhu Brother, I can’t enter the city. If you want to drink, you’ll have to take me outside."
"Is that so? Just wait here; I’ll go get it!" He turned and rushed back outside.
The man in the Official Robe watched the scholar's retreating figure and shook his head with a smile.
Suddenly, applause erupted. "Lu Pan really has impressive skills; he can actually swap heads!"
"Who?" Lu Pan snapped his head up and shouted sharply.
Hei Jiao revealed himself, his expression strange. He had felt that Lu Pan seemed familiar earlier, but only upon closer inspection of the scholar did he realize something was off. This was just like the tale from Liao Zhai about Lu Pan swapping heads! No wonder that scholar's Destiny Energy felt odd and was shrouded in dark mist—he was wearing someone else's head, filled with resentment.
Lu Pan stared intently at Hei Jiao. "Who are you?"
"Hehe," Hei Jiao smiled, "it seems we are neighbors."
"Neighbors?" Lu Pan was taken aback for a moment, then coldly retorted, "Nonsense! How could you be my neighbor?"
"Black Mountain, Wangsi City," Hei Jiao replied nonchalantly.
"What?" Lu Pan's expression changed drastically as he pointed at Qin Feng. "Are you really Er Da Wang from Black Mountain?"
He suddenly recalled the information he had gathered from Wangsi City. It was said that the Black Mountain Old Demon had found an Er Da Wang with formidable strength.
Hei Jiao looked at Lu Pan with a smile. "That's right, it's me. It seems my reputation has spread."
Lu Pan narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing Hei Jiao from head to toe, surprise flashing in his gaze. He couldn't see through his true form and sensed no demonic aura on him.
"Did you come specifically to find me?" Lu Pan asked in a low voice.
Hei Jiao shook his head. "Do you believe me if I say it was an accident? I just thought something was off with that book, so I followed it here. Who would have thought that the illustrious Lu Pan would dare to secretly swap heads for mortals?"
Lu Pan's face darkened. "So what? I advise you to mind your own business."
Hei Jiao's eyes glinted. "Are you really unable to ascend? Are you all just discarded waste?"
Lu Pan's face turned black at those words. "Little Demon, what do you know? We are merely avatars; our true selves will reclaim us sooner or later."
However, Hei Jiao seemed somewhat skeptical. Lu Pan was clearly in a state of despair; otherwise, he wouldn't dare to act against mortals. Weren't they afraid of retribution later? This was a violation of Difu's rules.
