Jiang Ming's eyes widened in disbelief as he stared directly at Yan Qing, as if trying to read the secrets hidden in his face.
At that moment, a gentle evening breeze swept by, like a messenger from nature announcing the arrival of night.
By the coast, waves crashed one after another, resembling tireless children at play. Each impact against the sandy shore produced a crisp sound, intertwining to create a unique symphony by the sea.
Accompanying the waves was a faint scent of sea salt, lingering at the tip of everyone's noses, carrying with it the mysterious and ancient essence of the deep ocean. It quietly seeped into their hearts, as if an invisible force was causing long-hidden shackles within to shatter like thin ice under the warm sun.
Jiang Ming seemed to be influenced by this enchanting atmosphere. He initially lowered his head silently, his tousled hair obscuring his eyes, making it difficult to discern his expression.
After a moment, as if he had made a decision, he slowly raised his head. A complex emotion flickered in his gaze as he looked at Yan Qing and said, "I didn't expect you would speak up for me."
His voice was soft, almost as if afraid to disturb the tranquility of the seaside.
Yan Qing raised an eyebrow slightly, a hint of a smile playing on his lips that carried an air of nonchalance. "What do you mean? I merely stated the facts as I know them; you don't have any suspicion of committing a second crime."
"Second crime?"
Jiang Ming tilted his head in confusion, as if hearing a completely unfamiliar term. His expression resembled that of a bewildered fawn.
Seeing Jiang Ming's reaction, Yan Qing couldn't help but laugh. The sound was bright and carried far in the evening breeze.
He turned gracefully, his trench coat fluttering in the wind. As he walked away, his shadow stretched long in the sunset's glow, resembling a solitary giant.
The evening clouds were painted like brocade, transforming the sky into a vibrant canvas. Against this picturesque backdrop, he walked with measured steps towards the vehicles parked along the road.
Drui Feng had been standing nearby, observing their interaction with keen interest. His bright eyes darted around before he leaned closer to Jiang Ming with an inquisitive expression. "Jiang Ge, what’s going on between you two? I feel like there's something off about the atmosphere here."
Curiosity sparkled in Drui Feng's eyes as he awaited Jiang Ming's explanation.
Hearing Drui Feng's puzzled remark, Jiang Ming's lips curled into a knowing smile. His gaze scanned Drui Feng from top to bottom like a scanner assessing its subject.
He slipped his hands into his pockets, leisurely stepping over the sand pits left by Yan Qing, inching closer to Drui Feng. With each step he took, the sand whispered softly beneath him, providing a gentle accompaniment to his movements.
Jiang Wenyu stood still, her gaze lingering on Yan Qing for a moment before casually glancing at Jiang Ming, who was walking toward Drui Feng in the distance. She frowned slightly and spoke with a hint of speculation in her voice, "Let me guess, did someone let him slip away again this time?"
Yan Qing shook his head gently, his expression serious. "It wasn't him who let them go. This time it was also an S-level Ability User; they are evenly matched and neither has the upper hand. Moreover, that person is Hei Yu."
"Hei Yu?" Jiang Wenyu's elegant brows furrowed slightly, resembling two willow leaves swaying in the breeze. She uncrossed her arms from her chest and leaned back against the front of the car.
The soft light of dusk bathed her in warmth, accentuating her curvaceous figure like a stunning oil painting.
"Are you talking about the Hei Yu who is one of the four criminals wanted by the Pacific Ability Federation alongside Mountain God?"
Surprise tinged Jiang Wenyu's tone, and a flicker of alertness crossed her eyes.
Yan Qing nodded solemnly and replied with conviction, "That's him."
An hour later, night had completely enveloped the earth, and stars twinkled in the sky. The silhouettes of four individuals appeared before the imposing gates of Z District Military Base before they entered the office of the research institute.
As soon as Drui Feng stepped into the office, he darted like a whirlwind toward the adjacent archive room, weaving between rows of file shelves. Before long, he emerged with an armful of documents that threatened to tumble from his grasp.
Drui Feng quickly approached the table and slammed the documents down with a loud thud, scattering papers everywhere in disarray.
He plopped down into a chair with a loud creak. Furrowing his brow in confusion, he exclaimed, "Who exactly is this Hei Yu? Why have I never heard of him before? Or am I just out of touch? How is he on par with Mountain God—no, Brother Jiang—as one of the top wanted criminals?"
As he spoke, Drui Feng scratched his head and flipped through the files with curiosity gleaming in his eyes.
Yan Qing ignored Drui Feng's exclamations and walked to the table, calmly sifting through the topmost documents.
He began to speak slowly, "This person is very dangerous. According to the information, he operates very discreetly but rarely fails in what he sets out to do. He has assisted several of the world's most dangerous criminal organizations and has even killed important government officials from other countries; that's why he is listed as one of the top wanted criminals."
Yan Qing's gaze remained fixed on the documents, as if she were trying to uncover Hei Yu's whereabouts from the lines of text.
Jiang Wenyu also approached the table, reaching out to flip open a file. Her expression was focused, her brow slightly furrowed.
"We can discuss his situation later, but Jiang Ming mentioned that he encountered three accomplices. These three individuals were hindered by signal interference in their communication, which is why he gave up tracking them. Can you remember what those three looked like?"
Jiang Wenyu looked at Jiang Ming, her eyes filled with inquiry. After speaking, she pulled out a few sheets of paper and a pen from a stack of white sheets and placed them in front of Jiang Ming, her gaze hopeful. "Why don't you try to sketch them?"
Jiang Ming glanced at the paper and pen before nodding. He replied in a steady tone, "I'll give it a try."
He picked up the pen, a flicker of contemplation crossing his eyes as he seemed to recall the appearances of the three individuals.
After a while, Yan Qing, Jiang Wenyu, and Drui Feng stood in a fan shape behind Jiang Ming, arms crossed and eyes fixed intently on him.
Jiang Ming sat in the chair, his pen gliding gently across the paper. His serious demeanor suggested he was crafting a masterpiece.
However, as the image gradually took shape on the paper, the three of them first stared in surprise before shaking their heads in unison.
"What is this supposed to be? Is it abstract or impressionist? I can't make sense of it at all!"
Drui Feng's eyes widened like two brass bells, filled with disbelief.
