Three men exchanged glances, a deep meaning flashing in their eyes.
One of them, a burly man, stepped forward. With each step he took, the ground seemed to tremble slightly beneath him. He grinned, revealing a set of teeth stained yellow from smoke, and said, “Well, Lao Hei, I didn’t expect you to handle things so efficiently. But the higher-ups said we must wait for the others to show up before we can pay you this time. How about waiting another couple of days? Or we can settle the payment right here.”
Though his tone appeared gentle, it carried an undeniable firmness as he fixed his gaze on Lao Hei, scrutinizing his reaction.
The man known as Lao Hei chuckled derisively, “Ha! This is the first time I’ve seen a buyer like you. What’s the deal? You don’t trust me to do my job? Then why hire me at all? Are you planning something sinister like killing me and taking my goods or burning bridges?”
As he spoke, the mysterious man's eyes sharpened, a glint of coldness flashing within them. His hand instinctively moved toward the weapon at his waist, emanating a dangerous aura.
The three men laughed sinisterly, their eerie chuckles echoing harshly in the empty, dilapidated building.
The burly man replied, “Come on now, what are you saying? We just want to ensure this mission goes off without a hitch.”
He spread his hands in a gesture of innocence, but the slight unease in his eyes did not escape Lao Hei’s notice.
Turning away, Lao Hei took another drag from his cigarette and gazed into the distance towards School 13. His eyes held a profound significance, as if he could see through the secrets hidden behind that institution.
“Alright then,” he said slowly. “I’ll trust you one more time. At this time the day after tomorrow, just place the payment here.”
The three men nodded eagerly, with the tall and thin one wearing a broad smile as he said, “Don’t worry, Lao Hei, we’ll make sure everything goes smoothly this time.”
His smile was somewhat obsequious, but a flash of malice crossed his eyes just as Lao Hei turned away.
They watched Lao Hei’s retreating figure, each harboring their own ulterior motives. The conspiracy behind this transaction loomed like shadows in the broken building.
Jiang Ming’s gaze was fixed intently on Lao Hei’s gradually disappearing silhouette, which appeared increasingly mysterious in the dim light.
Furrowing his brow slightly, Jiang Ming’s expression turned resolute as he quickly activated the tracking device on his wrist and sent a message to Yan Qing.
His fingers danced over the virtual keyboard with precision: “I’ll continue tracking Lao Hei. You three send someone else to follow.”
After sending the message, just as Jiang Ming was about to step forward to follow, he suddenly realized that the synchronization feed from his wrist device had been disconnected without him noticing.
He stared at the wrist screen, where only a small circle spun continuously, like a merciless vortex swallowing his hopes.
Jiang Ming furrowed his brow, a wave of unease rising within him.
"What’s going on?" he murmured to himself, various possibilities flashing through his mind.
Everything had seemed normal when he entered the building with that mysterious man. Could it really be that the three individuals had brought a signal jamming device? He felt a twinge of regret for not considering such a scenario beforehand.
Jiang Ming glanced again in the direction of Lao Hei. The figure was already somewhat blurred, but he could still make it out. At that moment, he turned back to look at the three people; they had turned and were heading in the opposite direction, their silhouettes gradually disappearing into the shadows of the corridor.
Meanwhile, ten minutes earlier, in the office, Yan Qing, Drui Feng, and Jiang Wenyu were intently watching the footage transmitted by Jiang Ming.
Suddenly, the screen went black; the signal was lost.
"What’s happening? Brother Yan, why did Jiang Ge's signal suddenly cut off? I remember he just applied for this device today," Drui Feng said, confusion written all over his youthful and vibrant face. He turned to Yan Qing while pointing at the black screen.
Yan Qing sat in his chair with his fingers interlaced under his chin, his brow slightly furrowed and his gaze deep and calm.
After a moment of silence, Yan Qing spoke slowly, "I don’t know what’s going on. It could be a signal jammer brought by someone else, or perhaps that location has inherent signal interference. Let’s not panic; we’ll wait for Jiang Ming’s next instruction."
Jiang Wenyu glanced at both of them and then at her computer screen showing the black display. She pressed her lips together tightly, her eyes revealing a hint of anxiety. She didn’t speak but sat quietly, her thoughts drifting towards Jiang Ming, wondering if he was safe now.
Jiang Ming followed Lao Hei and unknowingly arrived at a seaside area in this coastal city. It appeared to be an undeveloped scenic spot, eerily quiet except for the gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore.
There were few signs of human presence on the beach—only some scattered footprints of seabirds. As dusk approached, the sky gradually darkened, and the distant sunset resembled a magnificent painting, casting dazzling light from the sea.
The purple-red clouds stretched across the sky in patches, so brilliant that it evoked a sense of wonder as if the entire world had been painted with a layer of mysterious colors.
Lao Hei stood quietly at the coast, his broad back appearing somewhat lonely under the glow of the sunset. Unhurriedly, he pulled out a cigarette from his pocket, placed it between his lips, and skillfully lit it.
"Are you not planning to come out and meet me?"
Suddenly, two footprints appeared on the sandy beach behind him, leaving deep impressions in the sand. As the footprints slowly approached him, a mysterious figure gradually emerged from below.
Jiang Ming released his invisibility, feeling a surge of power emanating from his body, as if breaking through an invisible barrier. He materialized from his feet to his head, every inch of his skin re-exposed to the air.
When Jiang Ming stood beside Lao Hei, he cast a slight glance at him, a flicker of surprise flashing in his eyes.
Although he had discovered at the Military District Base research institute that he was a double S-level Ability User, Jiang Ming had never delved deeply into the limits of his Psychic Ability. He always viewed Psychic Ability merely as a tool for completing tasks and protecting people; he had never tested how much Psychic Ability he truly possessed.
However, the fact that this person could sense his presence indicated only one possibility: either their Psychic Ability level was higher than his, or they were of equal rank.
There were only a few dozen double S-level Ability Users in the world; could it be that such high-level Ability Users existed in a small place like Z City?
Jiang Ming appeared beside Lao Hei without any warning, like a ghost. Yet Lao Hei seemed to have anticipated this, showing no signs of surprise. He slowly turned his head, his deep-set eyes revealing an elusive expression as he scrutinized Jiang Ming from head to toe.
Lao Hei's gaze slid over Jiang Ming's face down to his toes and back to his eyes. Then, he lightly shook his fingers holding the cigarette, causing ash to fall like black snow.
Taking a deep drag from the cigarette, Lao Hei exhaled a smoke ring. The ring took on an eerie hue under the glow of the evening sky as he leisurely spoke, "You must be the Mountain God. I didn't expect you to be younger than I imagined."
His voice was hoarse, like sandpaper scraping against rough wood, carrying a hint of disdain.
