As the moonlight began to rise, it resembled a layer of silver frost, casting a cool touch as it gently fell from the night sky, draping the city streets in a dreamlike veil.
The cold wind of December cut through the streets like a sharp blade, mercilessly swirling up the weeds on the ground. The weeds danced helplessly in the wind, spinning slightly before falling quietly as if they had exhausted their strength.
The streetlights emitted a warm yellow glow, flickering slightly in the cold breeze, as if they were struggling to hold their ground, illuminating the path for late-night wanderers.
The shop signs flickered with colorful lights in the darkness, yet they could not dispel the chill of the winter night. Vehicles sped by on the road, leaving behind fleeting shadows of light.
“Hey? Nuan Nuan, what’s up with you today? Aren’t you going to say hi to Zhou Xingshu? I saw him looking for you in class,” Zhang Yuqing said casually, taking a sip of her Coke, her lips curling slightly as curiosity sparkled in her eyes.
The girl known as Nuan Nuan wore a frown as she walked alongside Zhang Yuqing on the street outside their school after class. Her brows knitted together, and there was a hint of confusion in her gaze. “Don’t mention it. I don’t even know why he’s looking for me; it was just a case of mistaken identity yesterday. What do you think he’s trying to do?”
Lu Xiaonuan ran her fingers through her hair in frustration, clearly troubled by this sudden situation.
Their footprints and shadows trailed behind them as Lu Xiaonuan stared at her toes, stepping forward one by one while her thoughts raced like wild horses.
Suddenly, an idea flashed through her mind, and her eyes lit up. “Do you think Zhou Xingshu might actually like me? Even though I confessed to the wrong person yesterday, him coming to find me at the classroom door today—could that mean he has feelings for me?”
Zhang Yuqing nearly choked on her Coke at this revelation, letting out a splutter as it spilled from the corner of her mouth. She quickly wiped away the soda stain with her hand, eyes wide with surprise as she looked at Lu Xiaonuan. Seeing the sincerity in Lu Xiaonuan's eyes made her realize she wasn’t joking.
“Are you serious? Nuan Nuan, Zhou Xingshu has had plenty of girlfriends—saying he’s had 100 would be an exaggeration, but 80 is definitely closer to reality. Do you really think someone like him would be interested in you?”
As Zhang Yuqing spoke, she couldn’t help but scrutinize her friend from head to toe. Though she was Lu Xiaonuan's friend, she felt compelled to deliver a reality check; after all, as a true friend who understood Lu Xiaonuan's personality and her rather scarce “charisma,” she couldn’t resist.
Hearing Zhang Yuqing's unrelenting critique, Lu Xiaonuan lowered her head in frustration, resembling a defeated little rooster.
She kicked a small stone that was passing by with force, watching it bounce and roll away. "Then what do you think Zhou Xingshu wants from me? Is it really just to deliver a bottle of drink? Or is he trying to repay me for the water I gave him yesterday?"
Zhang Yuqing shrugged her shoulders helplessly, adopting a defeated posture. "I don't know; who knows?"
After saying that, she tilted her head to gaze at the sky, where the stars twinkled as if silently observing the troubles of these two girls.
Just as they both sighed in lamentation, a sudden and violent explosion erupted from behind them.
With a deafening roar, the sound was like thunder striking the ground, overwhelming their senses.
It seemed as if flames burst forth, like a ferocious beast opening its massive jaws to devour everything. A wave of heat rolled in layers behind them, crashing forward like a surging tide, forcefully pushing Zhang Yuqing and Lu Xiaonuan to the ground.
In an instant of distraction, both girls were sent sprawling forward with a thud, their arms and knees making intimate contact with the ground, sending sharp pains coursing through them.
Ignoring the pain, Lu Xiaonuan and Zhang Yuqing hurriedly turned to look back. They saw several parked cars on the street suddenly igniting in flames. The fire raged fiercely, licking at the car bodies as it rampaged through the night sky, threatening to turn it crimson. Soon, the vehicles were reduced to charred skeletons, their appearance terrifying.
People on the nearby street were also jolted by the sudden explosion and scrambled to their feet. Their faces were etched with panic as they frantically gazed at the horrifying scene. Screams and shouts intertwined, shattering the tranquility of the night.
At that very moment, Yan Qing was lazily nestled on his couch at home, sitting side by side with Jiang Ming while watching television. The sound of a legal education program echoed in the quiet living room, and the warm light cast over them created a cozy and relaxed atmosphere.
Suddenly, Yan Qing's phone rang, breaking the serenity. He picked it up and saw it was a call from Lin Ran before answering.
"Hey, Yan Qing, are you busy? Hurry over to No. 13 Middle School, it's the closest to your place. Get there and look for clues," Lin Ran's voice crackled through the phone, chaotic and hurried, each word laced with urgency.
Yan Qing held the remote control, casually switching to another channel. The screen flashed to the colorful animations of CCTV10, but his mind was far from the television.
"What’s going on? Why the rush? Did you get a raise?" Yan Qing joked, knowing that Lin Ran wouldn’t be this frantic over something trivial.
"Yes, of course. My brother just called headquarters and said that the Mountain God has struck again. There's chaos erupting at No. 13 Middle School right now, and many students witnessed it. Last time it was at midnight, and we managed to handle it somewhat. But this time, a lot of vehicles were destroyed right when those high school students were leaving their evening classes. It’s a complete mess; we need to manage the situation quickly. Gather some personnel and stabilize the injured," Lin Ran's voice was hoarse, clearly overwhelmed by the sudden crisis.
Yan Qing furrowed his brow, a serious expression crossing his face. "The Mountain God has struck again?"
He instinctively glanced at Jiang Ming beside him.
Jiang Ming smiled gently at him, chewing on an apple picked with a toothpick, his relaxed demeanor starkly contrasting with the tense atmosphere.
Yan Qing paused for a moment but quickly regained his focus.
"Okay, I’ll head over right away with Jiang Ming," he replied with determination.
"Good, you two hurry up. You're the closest ones; get there first. The crowd is in chaos; over a hundred police officers are already on-site. You need to help out. I’ll call other departments to mobilize more personnel; they’ll be there soon," Lin Ran said before hastily hanging up the phone.
