As Yan Qing saw the familiar sender's name on the message, he couldn't help but furrow his brow slightly; this meant he would have to go on another business trip.
It was no wonder that the cat wasn't particularly close to him; he was often away from home and frequently had to leave it at the pet store.
Glancing at the time, Yan Qing greeted Jiang Ming and asked him to take care of his cat for a few days.
Jiang Ming, with his easygoing nature, smiled and agreed.
Yan Qing's latest assessment of his roommate was that Jiang Ming was very accommodating.
By the time Yan Qing and Jiang Ming returned home, it was already past four in the afternoon. After briefing Jiang Ming about their Cat Master, Yan Qing set down his bags and turned to head out again.
"Where are you going?"
Having changed his shoes and just as he was about to open the front door, Yan Qing was caught off guard by Jiang Ming's sudden question.
Yan Qing looked up and replied, "Just going to pick something up. I'll be back soon."
Jiang Ming's voice was soft. "Oh. Then come back early..."
After responding, Yan Qing turned around and closed the door with a sharp "bang," cutting off whatever else Jiang Ming had intended to say.
Jiang Ming rubbed his nose, lowering his head as he carried the groceries into the kitchen.
Arriving at the research institute, Yan Qing pushed open a heavy door. Inside, rows of firearms and ammunition were neatly arranged, creating an orderly and pleasing sight.
As usual, Yan Qing selected a standard silver handgun and tucked it into his waistband.
Yan Qing had entered this company with the help of a friend before completing her doctoral studies, and she had been working there for three years now. Just as her friend had described, this company was indeed one of the top 500 enterprises in the world, and it likely ranked within the top ten in the biopharmaceutical sector.
The company where Yan Qing worked was the headquarters for Z Country.
Beneath the surface facade of the company, it was essentially a biological research base.
In this world, psychic abilities had long since evolved into biological transformations. Simply put, it meant that the forms of humans and plants or animals could interchange. Those who possessed such abilities were defined as New-Type Superhumans.
One could imagine them as the fairies from ancient texts taking human form; however, unlike those mythical beings, their true forms were human, yet they possessed extraordinary powers.
Due to the awakening of genetic abilities similar to those found in plants and animals, they could also undergo mimicry transformations. Their conventional capabilities—strength, speed, and lifespan—had already far surpassed human limits.
Their existence posed a threat to society, and coupled with the malicious influence of certain malevolent superhuman entities, various countries had established organizations to eradicate them.
At this time, some Multinational Corporations emerged, beginning collaborations with governments. In just a few decades, they had set up over three thousand divisions across more than two hundred countries and established headquarters in six nations. This Biopharmaceutical Company’s Experimental Base was one such headquarters created through collaboration.
The Multinational Corporations worked hand in hand with governments to capture those superhuman entities deemed dangerous to society and conducted assessments to eliminate threats within specified timeframes. For confidentiality reasons, most operations were handled jointly by personnel from both sides.
Unbeknownst to her, Yan Qing had already reached the ground floor.
Perhaps it was because there was an extra person in the house; she hadn’t noticed last night. Now standing downstairs and looking up, she noticed that the lights in her room were still on.
In the chilly October night breeze, the soft glow emanating from within seemed to bring an unusual warmth.
A slight smile crept onto Yan Qing's lips as she exhaled a puff of cold air and stepped into the building.
"Did you make all of this?" As soon as she stepped inside, Yan Qing stared at the table full of dishes, momentarily taken aback. She turned to Jiang Ming, who was still busy in the kitchen.
Jiang Ming placed the last soup dish gently in front of Yan Qing. "Yes, this is my first time sharing a place with someone else. I hope you don't mind my cooking."
Jiang Ming handed Yan Qing a pair of chopsticks. "You should try this; I just made it."
Holding the bowl in her hands, Yan Qing followed Jiang Ming's instructions and picked up a few dishes to taste. She chewed slowly, her cheeks puffing out.
Seeing the hopeful look in Jiang Ming's eyes, Yan Qing offered an objective assessment. "It's not bad, but the salt is a bit heavy."
Jiang Ming smiled shyly upon hearing this. "Really?"
After saying that, she took a bite herself. "You're right; I did put in too much salt. I'll be more careful next time."
Yan Qing didn't want to dampen her new roommate's enthusiasm, so she forced herself to finish half a bowl of rice. Once they were both full, Yan Qing felt it necessary to clarify something with her new roommate. "I have a flight at nine tomorrow morning, so I’ll need you to take care of Dudu for the next couple of days."
Jiang Ming readily replied, "No problem! I happen to have some free time these days, so you can go without worry."
Seeing Jiang Ming's easygoing nature made Yan Qing feel a bit embarrassed. After all, asking someone she had just met to take care of her cat felt somewhat rude. However, with all the nearby pet shops having blacklisted her, she truly didn't know what else to do.
Fortunately, Jiang Ming did not refuse.
