Xiao Shaojin stepped into the room, immediately feeling an unusual chill in the air. Had Fei Liuli always lived in such a cold atmosphere?
Fei Liuli lay quietly asleep on the bed. Xiao Shaojin treaded lightly as he approached her.
He bent slightly, gently brushing away the tear stains at the corners of her eyes that had yet to dry. He stared at her, his gaze filled with a complex mix of emotions.
Recalling his recent encounter with Ma Tianshu, it was Fei Liuli who occupied his thoughts completely.
When he saw Xu Jincheng hurriedly embracing Tian Shu, flaunting his claim over her, the hatred and jealousy in his heart had surprisingly diminished.
Xiao Shaojin remembered those first few days after Ma Tianshu returned, when he would coax Fei Liuli to sleep and then habitually find himself in her room.
He would gently hold Fei Liuli as they drifted off together, only to wake up in the early hours and quietly leave her side to return to Ma Tianshu.
He recalled the moment he embraced Ma Tianshu, catching a glimpse of the deep sorrow etched on Fei Liuli's face. To his surprise, he felt a small surge of excitement and a childish urge to show off in front of her. Yet when he heard Fei Liuli hurriedly clarifying their relationship to others, a wave of anger surged within him.
And when he first laid eyes on Xu Jincheng, he felt as if he was about to entrust his most treasured possession, Tian Shu, to someone else.
All these emotional fluctuations stemmed from one person: Fei Liuli.
Xiao Shaojin finally realized that the one he truly loved had always been her.
Suddenly, he pulled Fei Liuli tightly into his embrace.
Her eyelashes fluttered slightly in response, and he murmured softly, "Sleep now, I'm right here beside you."
At that moment, Fei Liuli was having an incredible dream. In her dream, Xiao Shaojin held her gently, a soft smile playing on his lips as he accompanied her into slumber.
How wonderful it would be if it could end like this. Xiao Shaojin thought to himself, finally coming to terms with his feelings. All he wanted at that moment was to make up for past mistakes and bring happiness to Fei Liuli.
However, fate seemed unwilling to grant him his wish.
Before he could express his feelings to Fei Liuli upon her awakening, another cruel choice struck him like a bolt from the blue.
Early in the morning, Xiao Shaojin was hurriedly dragged out of his room by Xu Jincheng, who looked grave and tense as if facing a formidable enemy. "Ma Tianshu is missing," he announced.
"Weren't you the one who said everything would be fine with you around? What’s going on now?"
Xiao Shaojin was furious, nearly fuming with anger. He had thought Xu Jincheng was someone he could trust completely, but it turned out he was sorely mistaken.
"I have no idea. When I woke up this morning, Tianshu was already gone. I've searched everywhere she might have gone. Shaojin, the fact that someone could abduct Tianshu without me noticing means they are not to be underestimated."
Xu Jincheng remained relatively calm; after all, panicking wouldn’t help the situation.
"Jincheng is right." Just as Xiao Shaojin was feeling overwhelmed, he suddenly noticed that Fei Liuli had appeared by his side without him realizing it.
"Shao Jin, we need to stay calm to come up with a plan. Think carefully—have you offended anyone recently?"
Xiao Shaojin felt a wave of dread wash over him. He couldn’t deny it; aside from the stern Chairman, he had probably offended nearly everyone in the city.
It was clear that Fei Liuli recognized this as well. She stopped questioning him and began to recall anyone who might have had a motive to kidnap Ma Tianshu. Suddenly, she remembered something the burly thug had said when they were out strolling that day.
"Who doesn’t know that this is a big shot at Director Xiao's residence? Our master has specifically instructed us to treat her well."
"Master has suffered quite a bit from that guy, Xiao Shaojin."
A lewd face gradually emerged in her mind. Fei Liuli patted the dazed Xiao Shaojin and Xu Jincheng, saying, "Do you remember what happened a couple of days ago when Tian Shu and I ran into something on the street? Someone mentioned that it was a recent grudge we had formed. I wonder if it could be..."
"Watch out!" Fei Liuli felt a sudden rush of arrows slicing through the air behind her. Before she could react to defend herself, Xiao Shaojin tightly embraced her and spun them around.
"You..."
"Are you okay?" Xiao Shaojin anxiously checked her from head to toe, his face filled with concern, completely ignoring the mixed emotions of confusion and gratitude in Fei Liuli's eyes.
"I'm fine, really." Fei Liuli lowered her head, unable to hide the warmth blooming in her heart.
On the side, Xu Jincheng couldn't hold back any longer. He pulled out an arrow and walked over, taking down the note attached to it. After reading it, he handed it to Xiao Shaojin.
"With that clever mind of yours, I don't think I need to introduce myself. Xiao Shaojin, if you want to meet your beauty, come tonight at midnight to the alley behind South Street. No bringing an army, okay? Haha!"
The note was stained with blood.
Fei Liuli stared into Xiao Shaojin's eyes, filled with complicated emotions, and felt an inexplicable pain in her chest.
It seemed like something bad was about to happen.
