She needed to act quickly. After realizing that Yun Zhi Yue had yet to visit her in-laws, Lan Ying twisted her ear in frustration. The two families lived close to each other and often interacted, so she thought that with the children growing up, her daughter would surely be considerate.
Who would have thought that the girl seemed a bit slow on the uptake? She hurriedly told her to take a gift and visit them to make a good impression.
Yun Zhi Yue had grown up in the Nan Family and didn’t care much about formalities; she assumed that Yun Zhi Yue was simply hesitant due to the change in their relationship. Nan Jing was different from her mother; he was gentle and elegant, much like his name suggested, Chen Yan.
Chen Yan was warm and affectionate, pulling her close and teasing, “You silly girl, why bring gifts? Just coming over is enough. With this change in status, has our little Yun Zhi Yue become so polite?”
Yun Zhi Yue’s face turned slightly red. “Aunt Yan, please don’t say that. It’s a bit embarrassing.”
Chen Yan covered her mouth with a laugh. “Alright, I won’t say anything more. I’ve watched you grow up, and I hope you can feel as comfortable here in the Nan Family as you did before.”
“If that little rascal Nan Jing bullies you, don’t hold back—just hit him! If you can’t manage it, tell Aunt Yan, and I’ll let your Uncle Nan deal with him.”
Yun Zhi Yue’s eyelids twitched, and she nodded repeatedly. The fear of their wives was well-founded; some elegance was merely surface-level. The adults in her family also exuded an air of nobility.
While they were chatting, Nan Jing returned home from work. Seeing everyone gathered, Yun Zhi Yue obediently greeted him. Although his expression remained neutral, he responded immediately.
Nan Jing was used to being taciturn, but from his brief reply, it was evident that he was quite pleased with her as his future daughter-in-law.
Chen Yan said with mock annoyance, “Is that all you’re going to say? If it weren’t for Yun Zhi Yue being accustomed to your silence since childhood, I’d think you had something against her. She brought you a gift—can’t you be a bit warmer as an elder?”
Nan Jing sighed and instructed the kitchen to prepare more of Yun Zhi Yue’s favorite dishes but didn’t elaborate further.
Nan Jing glanced at the somewhat shy girl and smiled as he changed his shoes before wrapping an arm around her waist and leading her to the sofa.
The family chatted about everyday matters, creating a warm atmosphere. However, at the dinner table, Chen Yan piled a mountain of food onto Yun Zhi Yue’s plate until she felt stuffed.
After dinner, Nan Jing took Yun Zhi Yue’s hand and strolled along a small path to help with digestion. Suddenly he said, “I thought you wouldn’t come to my house.”
Yun Zhi Yue replied curiously, “Why do you say that? I used to come here often; it doesn’t make sense not to visit now that we’re closer.”
Nan Jing looked at her with a dazed expression for the first time. Regarding this relationship, she felt a sense of reality, yet there was an underlying feeling of illusion, as if they were moving forward but trapped in a dream.
At that moment, both Reincarnation Stone and Yun Zhi Yue felt a jolt. The illusion was evident, for from the very beginning, it was merely a façade woven by Yun Zhi Yue. The truth was that Yun Zhi Yue did not love Nan Jing.
For a fleeting second, Yun Zhi Yue felt a pang of guilt, but it quickly faded away. She reminded herself that she was pursuing him to save him. With that thought, she leaned in confidently.
After a brief kiss, Yun Zhi Yue smiled and asked, "Do you still feel like it's an illusion? Surely you aren't kissing a fake person?"
Nan Jing returned to her usual elegant demeanor, wrapping her arms around Yun Zhi Yue's soft waist and pulling her into an embrace.
"Not enough," she said. "Let's continue."
