"Is it okay to say that? Isn't it something only couples do?" Xiao Lei insisted on clarifying.
Hu Xiuying, feeling cornered by the question, blushed and shyly replied, "Mm."
"No wonder," Xiao Lei remarked.
"What do you mean, 'no wonder'?" Hu Xiuying asked.
"When we were... you called me 'husband,'" Xiao Lei said earnestly.
"What are you talking about? I didn't call you that," Hu Xiuying exclaimed, her embarrassment intensifying as she recalled her passionate state earlier. The thought made her blush even more.
"You really did call me that," Xiao Lei insisted seriously.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed? Stop saying that!" Hu Xiuying's face turned bright red as she playfully hit Xiao Lei, looking like a little girl.
Seeing his mother like this was incredibly adorable to Xiao Lei. He couldn't help but grab her hand and pull her into his embrace again.
"Let go!" Hu Xiuying protested, struggling. "It's almost dark; we need to go! Let me go!"
Xiao Lei held on tighter. "Then call me something sweet, and I'll let you go, okay?"
"What should I call you?" Hu Xiuying was at a loss for words.
"Think about it," Xiao Lei said.
"Good son," Hu Xiuying called out.
"That doesn't sound good," Xiao Lei tightened his embrace a little more.
Hu Xiuying thought for a moment and exclaimed, "Precious son!"
"No way," Xiao Lei shook his head.
Hu Xiuying was at a loss and anxiously asked, "What do you want me to call you?"
"Call me husband," Xiao Lei whispered softly in her ear.
"Are you trying to get yourself killed? You're my son!" Hu Xiuying exclaimed, feeling utterly embarrassed.
"But you just called me that, didn't you? If you don't call me, I won't let go," Xiao Lei tightened his hold on her again.
Hu Xiuying's face turned bright red. She thought to herself that since they had already done those things together, calling him that wasn't such a big deal. Blushing, she shyly said, "Husband." After saying it, her ears turned even redder.
"Honey," Xiao Lei exclaimed excitedly upon hearing his mother call him that.
"You’re killing me with embarrassment! Let me go; I need to go back first," Hu Xiuying said, her face still flushed.
"Xiao Lei, let her go," Hu Xiuying said as she turned and walked away from the group, not looking back. Perhaps it was out of embarrassment that she hurried home, her heart racing with a mix of excitement and shame. How could Xiao Lei be so unreasonable? It was mortifying to have called her own son 'husband.' Yet, she had done it too, and the thought made her blush even more. The more she thought about it, the more embarrassed she felt. As she walked, her face grew hot and her heart raced.
When she reached her yard, she took a deep breath to calm herself. She touched her face, still feeling a bit warm, and patted her chest to steady her nerves. Acting as if nothing had happened, she walked into the house. Inside, the family was gathered around the dinner table; it was getting dark, nearly six o'clock.
"Mom, you're back! Come eat!" Xiaogang called out to her.
"Mm," Hu Xiuying replied as she sat down at the table and began to eat.
"Mom, where's Er Ge? Why hasn't he come home yet? If you don't keep an eye on him, he's only going to get more reckless," Xiao Cai said angrily.
Hu Xiuying felt her face flush involuntarily but retorted, "You were just saying good things about him this morning, you little brat."
"Mom, you're just defending Er Ge! You really need to talk to him. Look at me—I'm so well-behaved! Unlike Er Ge, who is never around," fifteen-year-old Xiao Zhi chimed in.
Hearing this, Hu Xiuying reached out and ruffled her younger son's hair with a smile. "Yes, you're the most well-behaved one. Now eat your dinner."
"Xiuying, I'm not trying to criticize you, but look at Xiao Lei—he hardly speaks. Every time he goes out to play, he doesn't even let us know where he is. We worry about him! You really need to have a serious talk with him this time," Grandma added from the side.
"That's right, Xiuying. Xiao Lei never listens to me; you have a way with him," Li Kehu chimed in.
Seeing that the whole family was discussing Xiao Lei, Hu Xiuying could only agree. "Mm, I will definitely talk to him when he gets back." But deep down, she wondered what she could say to him. After all, he had only been playing in the woods for too long; it wasn't like he had done anything wrong. Yet, she couldn't express that either—she could only say what everyone expected.
