"Fengyi, where have you been? I've been waiting for you all morning!" Cheng Ruoyao looked at Lin Fengyi as he carried me inside, a clear displeasure flashing in her eyes. She pouted slightly, her face full of dissatisfaction.
"What are you doing here?" He gently set me down on the sofa, his movements careful as if afraid of hurting me.
Turning to Cheng Ruoyao, his expression changed. He supported his forehead with the thumb and index finger of his right hand, his tone slightly impatient, clearly resistant to her presence.
"Hey! I know it's your birthday today, so I specially came over to give you a gift. Is this how you thank me?"
Cheng Ruoyao complained with a pout, unbothered by anyone else as she linked her arm with Lin Fengyi's. When she glanced at me from the corner of her eye, her face was smug, as if declaring her claim over Lin Fengyi. That show-off demeanor stirred an uncomfortable feeling in my heart.
"Not needed! Mother Wu, see her out!" Lin Fengyi had no intention of indulging her any longer. The air around us instantly turned icy, his voice cold and resolute.
I watched everything unfold with a detached gaze, suddenly feeling a sense of schadenfreude. Seeing her taken down a notch brought me an inexplicable sense of satisfaction.
"Lin Fengyi, you'll regret this! One day, you'll beg me to stay here!" Tears glimmered in Cheng Ruoyao's red-rimmed eyes, but she stubbornly held them back.
In her gaze, I saw an emotion that spoke of determination, and it sent a fleeting panic through me, as if I sensed she would bring greater trouble between Lin Fengyi and me.
After Cheng Ruoyao left, Lin Fengyi tossed her gift and the cake into the trash bin without a second glance.
Cheng Ruoyao's attempt to curry favor had clearly missed the mark; ever since three years ago, he hadn't celebrated his birthday. That painful memory seemed to have filled him with aversion toward birthdays altogether.
"Treating a girl so coldly is truly heartless. Besides, she's President Cheng's daughter. Why not fulfill her wish? It could pave the way for your future," someone remarked.
I sat down on the sofa, leisurely making small talk, and when I saw Lin Fengyi frown for a moment, a slight smile crept onto my lips. I took pride in my ability to control his emotions, but beneath that pride lay a deep bitterness.
"Enough! Chang Huan!" He turned his face away, accompanied by a few coughs, and strode upstairs with hurried steps, as if he were escaping something.
"Feeling guilty? You haven't celebrated your birthday in years. Are you afraid of remembering your sister? Is it her that weighs on your conscience?"
I shouted at his retreating figure, causing the busy servants to freeze in place, heads bowed, not daring to breathe.
However, Lin Fengyi ignored me. At that moment, the study door slammed shut with a loud bang, the sound echoing like a heavy blow to my heart.
I felt dizzy and closed my eyes as unwanted memories surged forth like a tidal wave, leaving me nowhere to hide.
Three years ago, my sister told me she had fallen in love with a man. He was poor but talented; his name was Lin Fengyi, a recent graduate.
At that time, I heard many good things about him from my sister. Just like that, this stranger, Lin Fengyi, took root in my heart like a tiny seedling that gradually grew into a towering tree.
Later on, I met him a few times at my sister's apartment. Our conversations were sparse, yet I felt as if he were the lost love of my past life, crashing into my heart recklessly and becoming unbreakable.
I both looked forward to him and my sister tying the knot while secretly harboring a small sense of reluctance and affection. I struggled with these conflicting emotions until the day my sister "left."
