Aunt Wang did not respond to my words but instead pulled out a talisman from her belongings and handed it to me. "Child, time is of the essence, so I'll be brief," she said. "Carry this talisman with you; it will ensure your safety for the time being." 0

"I need to go out and search for your sister's body to see if there's any way to quell her resentment," she continued. "Before I return, do not trust anyone." 0

At this point, Aunt Wang's gaze suddenly turned sharp. She locked her eyes onto mine and said each word deliberately, "Especially not your mother!" 0

My heart sank. "Aunt Wang, what do you mean by that?" 0

Aunt Wang seemed to want to say more but ultimately sighed instead. She reached out and gently touched my head. "Child, this matter is far more complicated than you think. Just remember my words; I will find a way to keep you safe." 0

I nodded, somewhat confused, as I accepted the talisman from Aunt Wang. 0

When I returned home, it was already deep into the night. Most of the people in the yard had dispersed, with only a few remaining to clean up the dead fish. I was so frightened that I trembled all over and hurried back to my room. Perhaps I was too exhausted; I collapsed onto my bed and quickly fell asleep. 0

The next morning, I was awakened by a series of piercing screams. I scrambled out of bed and rushed outside. By then, a large crowd had gathered in the yard. Their faces were pale, filled with terror as they exchanged worried glances and whispered among themselves. 0

As I looked closer, I noticed that everyone had fish scales appearing on their necks and arms. My heart raced in alarm as I dashed back to my room and rolled up my sleeves to check my own body. After confirming that there were no scales on me, I finally breathed a sigh of relief. 0

The commotion in the yard continued, and I listened closely to grasp what was happening. 0

They were all discussing the strange events that had occurred that morning, as well as the death of the village chief. 0
"Are we all going to die today?" 0
"The chief died so tragically. He was the most powerful charlatan in our village, and if he couldn't escape death, what are we supposed to do?" 0
"It's all that dead girl’s fault. If it weren't for her, we wouldn't be in this situation." 0
"With the chief gone, who can save us now?" 0
The chatter filled the courtyard, resembling a bustling market. 0
Finally, it was uncle Zhang who stepped forward to quiet everyone down. 0
uncle Zhang was the most respected person in the village aside from the chief. 0
"Everyone, please calm down. I've sent someone to the town to find a master. He will be back soon." 0
"I promise that everyone will be safe." 0
With uncle Zhang's assurance, the crowd began to settle down. 0
By evening, the person sent to find the master returned, accompanied by a young monk. 0
uncle Zhang gathered everyone together and pointed at the monk. "This is Master Hui Kong; he is a person of great ability, so you can all rest assured." 0
Hui Kong scanned the crowd with a furrowed brow. "What exactly have you done? Why do you all bear the Mermaid Curse?" 0
I opened my mouth to speak but was cut off by uncle Zhang. 0
"Master Hui Kong, it rained yesterday and caused the water level to rise. We caught some fish to eat, but who would have thought..." 0
At this point, uncle Zhang sighed deeply. "Please, Master Hui Kong, help us." 0
Hui Kong snorted coldly. "Is that so?" 0
"Of course," uncle Zhang nodded and turned to the crowd. "Isn't that right?" 0
"Yes, yes!" Everyone nodded in agreement. 0
I followed suit and nodded as well. 0

Hui Kong frowned as he scrutinized everyone in the village. After a long pause, he finally spoke, "You all have been afflicted by the Mermaid Curse." 0

"It seems that your ancestors' graves are filled with the Mermaid Curse; only in a place of extreme darkness can such a curse thrive." 0

The villagers' expressions changed in an instant. "What should we do?" 0

Hui Kong waved his hand dismissively. "It's nothing to worry about. Tomorrow at dawn, I will take you to dig up the graves and drive away the Mermaid Curse." 0

"When you return home, use ash mixed with water to cleanse your bodies." 0
