The Snail Woman

In the village, a faceless female corpse covered in Apple Snails was discovered. I bravely stepped forward to move the body, ensuring she would be laid to rest. Soon after, the village was plagued by a snail infestation. The villagers asked if I was willing to offer a sacrifice to Snail Immortal to protect the village. I agreed, but I insisted that it wasn't just me; everyone must also make a sacrifice to Snail Immortal.
Our village has a river with crystal-clear water. However, one day, the entire river suddenly became infested with Apple Snails, emitting a nauseating stench. The foul odor permeated the village, making it unbearable for everyone. The villagers found it strange and wanted to investigate the source of the smell. They followed the riverbank, searching everywhere until they stumbled upon a cave.
The first few villagers hesitated at the entrance of the cave. After a moment, they trembled and stepped back. A few young men rushed forward but were also frightened enough to retreat a few steps at the sight before them. Inside the cave lay a naked female corpse, completely covered in Apple Snails. These snails were not of ordinary size; each one was as big as a fist and seemed to snarl at us.
The corpse's face was clean, devoid of any snails, but there was no skin on her face! Her long tongue protruded outward, and her eyes glared with resentment at each villager, as if cursing us all. Standing beside me, the Village Chief trembled with fear, his hands shaking as he struggled to speak. After what felt like an eternity, he finally managed to utter a request for someone to fetch the village's Mourning Matron.
Soon, the Mourning Matron was summoned, leading the villagers toward the cave. With each step closer, the stench grew more intense.
"What kind of hatred and resentment must this be?"
The Mourning Matron's gaze darkened as she surveyed the scene. She pulled three incense sticks from her robe, lit them, and placed them on the ground. Bowing three times with great reverence towards the female corpse, she spoke solemnly, " Snail Immortal above, and Mourning Matron below, I beseech you to grant your presence. The deceased is of utmost importance; let us first retrieve this young lady's body and lay her to rest."
As her words fell, the Apple Snails on the corpse remained unmoving. The Mourning Matron turned to the crowd and commanded, "Everyone kneel and bow!"
The villagers, frightened, quickly dropped to their knees. One by one, they struck their heads against the ground until blood flowed, causing the swarm of Apple Snails to gradually disperse. Once they were gone, the Mourning Matron covered the female corpse with a garment and let out a sigh of relief, which was echoed by the villagers.
At that moment, the Mourning Matron suddenly turned around and asked loudly, "Is there a strong-bodied Child Male among you?"
"Only a Child Male with strong yang energy can avoid being disturbed by this resentment and can safely move this young lady's body!"
The villagers exchanged glances but dared not speak. The Mourning Matron's cane struck the ground with a resounding thud. "What’s wrong? Is there no one?"
"If no one steps forward, this young lady's body cannot be buried properly. Our earlier agreement will be voided, and Snail Immortal will return once more!"
"By then, it won't just be one river; our entire village will be doomed!"
Xiao Hu gritted his teeth and stepped forward boldly. "I'll do it!"
"I'll go too!"
With Xiao Hu leading the way, others gradually began to stand up as well. I glanced at the corpse in the cave and then at the elderly Mourning Matron before stepping forward myself.
The Mourning Matron looked at us and selected four individuals before pulling out some talisman papers from her robe, handing one to each of us. "This young lady carries heavy resentment; be careful not to harm yourselves."
