Lin Lin's mother had stayed with her for a long time, only going to rest late at night.
Lin Lin lay on her side in bed, her legs slightly bent, staring blankly at the light. Her flowing long hair cascaded over the embroidered pillow. Her graceful figure rose and fell rhythmically with each breath, while the soft white curtains danced gently in the breeze from the fan.
The night felt long and endless. When it was bright, Lin Lin rubbed her reddened eyes, got dressed, and tidied herself up a bit. She stepped out of her room and headed to the fields early to work. The morning breeze was refreshing. Lin Lin looked around helplessly, lightly brushing her long hair.
She found herself thinking about Changqing, comparing him to that boy. She always felt that Changqing was far better than him. She had little motivation to work!
How could she convince her family to call off the engagement? Lin Lin's mind was in a chaotic state.
“Lin Lin!” Hua Shan greeted her as she passed by. “Why are you up so early to work in the fields?”
“Yeah! Good morning, Hua Shan!” Lin Lin forced a smile.
“Your aunt arranged that engagement for you, right? That boy is so unattractive! How could he possibly be worthy of our Lin Lin?” Hua Shan laughed.
Lin Lin smiled faintly and shook her head, not knowing what to say.
“What about your mom?” Hua Shan continued to ask.
“My mom wants me to agree!” Lin Lin replied with a bitter smile.
“Why?” Hua Shan asked, puzzled.
“I’m not sure either!” Lin Lin said, feeling a bit wronged.
"That's not necessarily a bad thing! They have money! They have things!" Hua Shan thought to herself.
Lin Lin smiled slightly, lowering her head and remaining silent.
"Well, I’ll head over now! You keep busy!" Hua Shan said with a smile.
"Uh-huh! Uh-huh!" Lin Lin replied absentmindedly.
Once Hua Shan had walked away, Lin Lin felt a pang of discomfort in her heart, a sense of grievance that made her shed two tears.
The sunlight illuminated Lin Lin's fair face, while the gentle breeze danced through the lush green crops in the field. Birds flew by, chirping intermittently, and the insects in the ground buzzed softly. Nature appeared beautiful.
Lin Lin found it hard to concentrate on her work. By the time breakfast was due, she hadn’t accomplished much at all. She looked up at the sun; it was getting hot. She gathered her hair and wiped the sweat from her face with her arm. Walking out of the field, she went to the riverbank to wash her face. The cool water felt refreshing!
As she gazed at her reflection in the water, she let out a long sigh. She wouldn’t agree to that! Lin Lin thought as she stood up. Letting the cool river water wash away the mud from her feet felt nice as she stood barefoot on the grassy bank. Suddenly, she felt a bit scared about going home! She stared blankly into the distance.
Eventually, Lin Lin returned home. She suddenly felt that this place was somewhat unfamiliar; even her parents seemed a bit strange to her. For a moment, Lin Lin didn’t know how to react.
"I'm back!" she forced a smile.
"Time to eat," Lin Lin's mom said softly.
"Uh-huh," Lin Lin replied.
Lin Lin lowered her head as she ate, her mind in disarray. She desperately wanted to express to her father that she did not agree with the marriage proposal, but she didn't know how to start.
After finishing their meal, her two brothers left for school, making silly faces at her as they went. Lin Lin couldn't help but smile slightly and nodded in response.
"Lin Lin! When that boy arrives later with a gift for you, just accept it! That will mean the engagement is settled!" Lin Lin's mother turned her face away, avoiding looking at her.
"Why? I don’t want to! I don’t agree!" Lin Lin exclaimed, her voice tinged with a hint of grievance.
"What do you mean you can act according to your own whims? What am I supposed to be?" Lin Lin's father stood up angrily.
"Then! Then!" Lin Lin looked at her father, feeling a bit scared and unable to speak. She cast a pleading glance at her mother, who turned away, unable to meet her eyes.
"I'm not eating anymore!" Lin Lin declared angrily.
"Whether you eat or not, you have to agree!" Lin Lin's father commanded.
Lin Lin sat there in silence, staring blankly at her father. The kind man she had always known now seemed so unfamiliar, leaving her feeling lost.
After a moment, her mother pleaded softly, "Can you let our daughter think about it?"
"Think? I’ve already agreed! What do you want me to do with my face?" Lin Lin's father shouted. "You have to agree whether you like it or not!"
"Aren't you just forcing our daughter?" Lin Lin's mother said helplessly.
“I’m doing this for her own good!”
There was no need for further words. Lin Lin sat at home on her bed, waiting. A sense of unshakeable fear lingered in her heart. It wasn’t until nearly ten o’clock in the morning that she heard her father greeting someone outside. The boy followed him inside!
“Sir!” The boy politely offered a cigarette to Lin Lin’s father.
Lin Lin’s father took it, placing it between his lips, and the boy respectfully lit it for him. He took a long drag.
“Let the two kids talk, brother!” said the middle-aged man accompanying the boy.
“Uncle!” The boy shyly tugged at the middle-aged man’s sleeve.
“You’re all grown up now! Heh heh!” The middle-aged man laughed, ruffling the boy’s hair. “Be nice to your sister, okay?”
“Mm!” The boy nodded and approached Lin Lin’s room, reaching out to push the door open.
