Wang Lijuan stopped in her tracks, looking at him, at the man standing before her. She didn’t know what she should do at that moment, but the man remained silent, merely gazing at her coldly, as if trying to see right through her.
Wang Lijuan stared at him, taking in his gaunt face and his cold, wicked smile. Breaking the silence, she shouted at him, “You bastard! What the hell is wrong with you, Chen Wensheng? You’re still smiling; you nearly scared me to death!” With that, she lunged at him and wrapped her arms around him, bursting into tears.
Zhao Wensheng didn’t say anything because he didn’t know what to say. Besides, he didn’t want to talk; after all, having a beautiful woman in his arms felt great, and he certainly wanted to hold her a little longer. He thought that speaking now would ruin the mood. He decided to just embrace Wang Lijuan tightly, letting her lean on his shoulder as she cried. It wasn’t his fault; he was young after all!
Anyone who has seen "Dongfang Bubai: The Rise of the Storm" should remember the scene where Dongfang Bubai held Xue Qianxun's lifeless body and wept, saying, “Xue Qianxun! Let’s start anew.” If even Dongfang could think about a fresh start with a beauty after such a tragedy, how much more could Zhao Wensheng?
After a while, Zhao Wensheng uneasily asked Wang Lijuan, “What exactly happened?” as if he were completely unaware of the situation.
He was putting on quite an act! Wang Lijuan thought to herself as she pressed him further. “Don’t ask me first! What about you? Why did you call me? Where did you go afterward? And how did you end up here? If I don’t get a clear answer that satisfies me, we’re not done here!” Wang Lijuan wiped her tears fiercely.
Zhao Wensheng continued to hold Wang Lijuan and smiled again. This time his smile was genuine and warm rather than cold. He replied calmly, “Alright then, let me answer one question first. I really did have something to discuss when I called you. I felt a bit sad when you didn’t come out at first. But then I thought maybe you were really busy, so I stopped being angry.”
At that moment, Wang Lijuan pushed Zhao Wensheng away and glared at him with wide eyes. “Where did you go afterward?” She always felt that Zhao Wensheng’s hands were a bit too familiar. She pushed him away and stood up straight.
“I went over to that stall to grab a few baked buns and had a bowl of dumplings. Then I went to the billiards hall to watch some games. I planned to call you later; if you still weren’t out by then, I would have gone home. When I left the billiards hall, I saw from a distance that Gao Ming was riding with you and Uncle Heng heading north. Knowing you would come back, I started waiting for you here!” Zhao Wensheng said earnestly.
“It’s really that simple?” Wang Lijuan seemed skeptical. “Do you know everyone thought you were dead? Why didn’t you just die?” She complained while playfully hitting Zhao Wensheng.
“How could I die? Gao Ming knows that! Unless something unexpected happens, I’m not going anywhere!” For some reason, Zhao Wensheng had taken to calling himself ‘old man’ since he was young.
“Damn your ‘old man’ nonsense! Don’t keep calling yourself that in front of me. What did you call me for?” Wang Lijuan looked at Zhao Wensheng and couldn’t help but smirk as she tucked her hair behind her ear. “If your answer doesn’t satisfy me or isn’t clear enough, I’ll have Gao Ming beat the hell out of you!”
Wen Sheng lowered his head to think for a moment, then raised it with a surge of courage. "I want to give you this necklace!" He took out a delicate box from his pocket, held it in his palm, and opened it to reveal a necklace that sparkled with a greenish light. "Please accept it!" Wen Sheng's face turned bright red; he was afraid that Wang Lijuan would refuse.
Seeing the necklace, Wang Lijuan's eyes became misty. This boy, this impoverished boy, remembered that she once liked this necklace. He even spent over a hundred yuan to buy it for her. But she had already bought one herself. If she accepted it, what would that mean? Yet, she couldn't bear to hurt this boy. She knew that despite how steady he seemed now, a rejection could deeply wound him. He might collapse the moment she walked away. She seemed to understand his vulnerability. But did she really like him? Wang Lijuan pondered carefully.
Wen Sheng watched Wang Lijuan in silence, unsure of what she was thinking. He didn’t know if she would accept the gift. Looking into her eyes, which were so bright and clear, he noticed the tears glistening on her long eyelashes, yet her fair face showed no signs of joy.
The wind tousled Wang Lijuan's flowing hair and her light yellow dress. Under the dim glow of the streetlight, her figure trembled slightly, while the asphalt road appeared dark beneath the illumination. There weren’t many people on the road now; it was quiet enough to hear their own breathing. In the distance, the road seemed endless and long. Nearby, several shops and restaurants had their signs lit up, and the neon lights of an internet café flickered. The sky was somewhat dark despite the not-so-bright moon overhead.
She gazed at Wen Sheng's face; his expression was resolute—indeed very resolute. But what lay behind that determination? She couldn't be sure! Her eyes fell on the necklace in Wen Sheng's hand, which shimmered with a green glow under the light. It was beautiful—truly beautiful. She had one just like it, but upon reflection, hers didn’t compare; it didn’t look as appealing as this one. As she stared at the necklace, tears streamed down her cheeks, falling onto it. The droplets rolled on the necklace’s surface, sparkling with a captivating brilliance.
Looking at this boy who had secretly loved her yet dared not express it, Wang Lijuan felt a whirlwind of emotions inside her heart. However, she couldn’t bear to let him suffer emotionally. Slowly lowering her head, she said softly, "Could you help me put it on?"
Wen Sheng could hardly believe his ears; just accepting it was already beyond his expectations. Now she wanted him to help her wear it! He hesitated for a moment before softly replying, "Okay!"
Wen Sheng felt both excited and nervous; he could clearly hear his own breathing. His hand trembled slightly as he reached for Wang Lijuan's delicate neck. His heart raced faster as he touched her smooth skin. A faint scent of girlhood wafted through the air, making Wen Sheng feel dizzy as a smile involuntarily spread across his face.
At that moment, Wang Lijuan happened to look up at Wen Sheng and saw his smile. She felt something strange about it—different from before. There was something off about his smile that she couldn’t quite pinpoint.
"Will you walk me home?" Wang Lijuan gently asked Wen Sheng. Perhaps this would help him gain some confidence at least; that’s what she thought.
This was the busiest street in town, even though it was quite late. Both sides of the road were lined with brightly lit shops. They had only 500 meters to go but had been walking for half an hour without Wen Sheng saying a word.
Wang Lijuan noticed Wen Sheng glancing back occasionally and wondered why he did so?
They stopped in front of Wang Lijuan's house. Wang Lijuan smirked and said, "Are you coming in to sit for a while?"
"No, it's getting late. You should head back and get some rest. Sorry about that!" Wen Sheng replied, accustomed to apologizing.
Wang Lijuan pushed open the door next to her large red iron gate and had just stepped inside when she suddenly turned back. "Wen Sheng!"
"Yes!" Wen Sheng responded softly.
Wang Lijuan looked at him, as if waiting for something. But Wen Sheng remained silent.
"You should head back early too! Don't make your family worry!" Wang Lijuan said lightly. Then she turned and went inside, shutting the door firmly behind her.
Wen Sheng stood there for a moment, sighed, and then turned to leave.
After a while, Wen Sheng took Wen Xin to the fields to work.
