It was already past nine in the evening after the late study session, and the playground was deserted, with only a few rows of streetlights in front of the teaching building casting a lonely glow over the empty campus. A cool breeze swept through, causing the treetops to sway gently, stirring the summer cicadas that had long fallen asleep. After a moment of frantic chirping, they returned to silence.
Yang Qianfan had just stepped out of the library when he spotted Zhu Hui squatting in the school’s bike shed, fiddling with something.
“Hey, why are you still here so late?” Yang Qianfan approached her and asked.
Zhu Hui looked up at him, her eyes sparkling like crystals as if she had seen a savior. With tears welling up, she pointed at her bicycle and exclaimed, “I’m so glad you’re still here! Come help me unlock my bike.”
Yang Qianfan bent down to take a closer look and asked in confusion, “Where’s the key?”
“If I had the key, would I need your help?” Zhu Hui sighed in frustration, frowning. “Today has been so unlucky; I lost my key during lunch. When I get home, my grandma is definitely going to give me a good scolding.”
“Alright, stop worrying. Let me see if I can help you open it,” Yang Qianfan said as he crouched down in front of her bicycle and examined the lock for a while.
After much effort and nearly half an hour later, he finally managed to unlock the bike. Zhu Hui was ecstatic when she saw the lock click open. She praised him enthusiastically and hopped on her bike, ready to leave without looking back.
“Hey, are you really just going to leave like that?” Yang Qianfan stopped her.
“I’ve already thanked you; what more do you want?” she replied.
“Is just saying thank you really enough?” Yang Qianfan reminded her.
Zhu Hui immediately understood with his reminder, her face flushing with embarrassment. "Please—Yang Qianfan, this is school! That would be... so inappropriate."
"What are you afraid of? There's no one around," Yang Qianfan said, smiling gently as he leaned his face closer to hers.
Seeing him come closer, Zhu Hui couldn't help but laugh. She stood on her tiptoes and quickly pecked him on the cheek, which made him nod in satisfaction and smile back at her.
"Be careful on the road, and don't talk to strangers casually," he advised, reaching out to gently pat her head.
"I know, you're so naggy," Zhu Hui replied, wrinkling her nose at him in annoyance before hopping on her bike and riding off first.
Yang Qianfan watched her figure disappear into the distance, a faint smile on his lips. He looked up at the starless sky, taking a deep breath as he savored the poetic tranquility of the summer night. Just a few steps out of the school gate, he suddenly heard a loud crash followed by a piercing scream that cut through the air. Instinctively, he ran over to see what had happened. There lay Zhu Hui on the ground, clutching her head and groaning in pain, while her bicycle was awkwardly pinned beneath her slender body, its wheels spinning wildly.
"Help! My leg hurts so much!" Zhu Hui cried out from the ground, one hand pressed against her knee, tears streaming down her face as she convulsed in agony.
"What happened? Be more careful!" Yang Qianfan exclaimed upon seeing her in such distress. He hurried over to lift the bicycle off her and helped her up from the ground.
"Why am I so unlucky today? I lost my keys and now I've taken such a bad fall," Zhu Hui lamented, biting her lip as she struggled with the pain.
Yang Qianfan looked at her and shook his head with a smile. He crouched down to examine her knee carefully. Once he confirmed there were no serious injuries, he pushed her bicycle back toward the school to put it away properly before carrying her home on his back.
"Yang Qianfan, thank you!" Zhu Hui said from his back, feeling a warm current flow through her heart.
"What are you thanking me for?"
“Thank you for always being by my side, patiently guarding me, tolerating me, and accommodating me.” Zhu Hui took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and joked, “You must find it quite troublesome to deal with my seemingly reasonable yet unreasonable tantrums, right?”
“Turns out you know that what you did in the past was unreasonable! I thought you were clueless!” Yang Qianfan stopped in surprise, no longer moving forward.
“Alas! What can I say? I just wanted someone to pamper me a little, to feel cared for.”
“Pamper… pamper?” Yang Qianfan stumbled over his words, unable to associate Zhu Hui with the term ‘pampering.’
“You might not realize that every time you comfort me like this, I unconsciously feel a sense of being cherished, just like how sunlight nurtures flowers with warmth.”
“Really… really?”
“Mm!” Seeing his face turn red, Zhu Hui smiled and gave him a very affirmative answer.
They walked a bit further, as if nearing the end of the night. Suddenly, Yang Qianfan asked:
“Zhu Hui, which university do you plan to apply to for the college entrance exam? Is it Tsinghua University?” He lowered his head and felt a wave of disappointment wash over him.
“Do you hope I’ll apply to Tsinghua University?” Zhu Hui replied with a smile.
“I don’t know, but if you choose Tsinghua, I will support you.”
“Is that your sincere wish? Do you really hope I’ll leave Wuhan for Beijing?”
Yang Qianfan lowered his head and thought for a while, remaining silent. "For me, college is just an ideal starting point, not an ideal end point. It doesn't matter where the starting point is!" Zhu Hui put her mouth to his ear and whispered to him: "More Besides, Beijing is so far away, how can I be willing to leave you and my grandma!” Time flies by like a fleeting moment, and the college entrance examination is approaching in a blink of an eye. Yang Qianfan seems to be a completely different person recently, and it’s not too late to go to school. I passed the exam and never left early. I listened carefully in class and took perfect notes. After I got home, I could complete my homework independently without copying. My whole body seemed to have been drained of laziness and suddenly became diligent and hard-working. Sometimes When he encounters something he doesn’t understand in his studies, he will not be ashamed to ask and ask for advice humbly Zhu Hui. After lunch, he would run to the back playground alone with his book under his arm to find some peace and quiet, while memorizing English words. Not long after I carried it, a burst of hearty laughter suddenly came from behind, but it was mixed with a little ridicule. "Oh——, you really work hard! Do you really plan to take the Tsinghua exam with Zhu Hui?" Yang Qianfan looked back and saw it was Song Yu, holding a basketball in his arms and smiling Hoho was walking towards him. "Who told you that I'm going to take the Tsinghua exam?" Yang Qianfan snorted at him and said casually: "I'm self-aware, I'll wait until the next life to take the Tsinghua exam!" Song Yu laughed loudly again , put down the basketball and sat side by side with him, looked at him and asked with interest: "Are you studying so seriously now for Zhu Hui?" Yang Qianfan put down the book, smiled lightly at him, and shook his head. "Not for her?" Song Yu was a little surprised when he shook his head. "People live in this world not just to pick up girls, but more often they should live for their own ideals."
“Isn’t your ideal her?” Song Yu asked with a youthful innocence, clearly puzzled by his answer.
“Of course not!” Yang Qianfan replied with a smile, shaking his head, his gaze now carrying a hint of maturity.
Hearing his denial, Song Yu sighed in frustration. “My ideal is her, yet she chose you. I really don’t understand what I lack compared to you.”
“To be honest, you are truly outstanding; you excel in every aspect compared to me.”
“Then why doesn’t she like me?”
“Maybe it’s because you’re too perfect!”
“Is there something wrong with being perfect?”
Yang Qianfan smiled but did not respond.
“Then what is it about you that attracts her so much? Why does she only like you?” Song Yu asked earnestly, feeling a knot of anxiety in his heart.
Seeing his serious expression, Yang Qianfan couldn’t help but chuckle. After pondering for a moment, he said, “Sometimes, a former bad boy can be more appealing than a naturally good person.”
“Cut it out—what kind of logic is that?”
Seeing his nonchalant attitude, Song Yu lost interest in questioning him further. With a disdainful huff, he pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, took out two, and asked if Yang Qianfan wanted one. When Yang Qianfan shook his head to decline, Song Yu lit one up and began to smoke with pleasure. Just as he took a puff, Yang Qianfan suddenly reached over and snatched the cigarette from his mouth.
“Hey, what are you doing?” Song Yu was quite annoyed by this unexpected action.
“A man should take responsibility for everything around him, starting with his own body,” Yang Qianfan said as he extinguished the cigarette that had only been smoked once. He then tossed it back to Song Yu, adding, “Protecting the environment is everyone’s responsibility.” He pointed to a nearby trash can, urging him to dispose of the extinguished cigarette properly.
Song Yu was momentarily at a loss for words, caught between laughter and disbelief. With a bewildered expression, he chuckled, “Now I finally understand why Zhu Hui likes you so much; you’re just too adorable.” With that, he followed Yang Qianfan’s suggestion and threw the extinguished cigarette into the trash can.
Yang Qianfan smiled at him, seeing a reflection of his own past in Song Yu’s genuinely surprised expression.
“Hey, I heard you play basketball really well. I’d like to challenge you to a game. Is that okay?” Song Yu said earnestly as he picked up a basketball.
After considering for a moment, Yang Qianfan happily agreed to his request and set aside his book to join him for a game of basketball.
