This year's Valentine's Day coincided with the Lantern Festival, making the streets particularly lively. Vendors selling roses and those selling firecrackers were nearly equal in number, each claiming their share of the bustling crowd. After school in the afternoon, Yang Qianfan waited at the school gate for Zhu Hui to arrive. He waited anxiously, and just as he was about to head to Zhu Hui's classroom to find her, she finally appeared, panting heavily under the weight of her heavy backpack.
"What on earth took you so long? Why are you so late?" Yang Qianfan shouted at her in frustration upon seeing her.
"Alright, don't be mad. It's my fault; I apologize, okay?" Zhu Hui said, shrinking her neck and clasping her hands together in a plea for his forgiveness.
Seeing her pitiful expression, Yang Qianfan couldn't bring himself to scold her any further. He reached out his hand and asked with a smile, "Where are my gloves? Let me see if you’ve lost a finger or gained an extra one."
"Cut it out! If you think you can kiss me, you're dreaming. Just so you know, there's no chance of you becoming a disabled person or a freak; my gloves have exactly ten fingers," Zhu Hui wrinkled her nose at him and made a face of disgust.
"Is that so? Then hurry up and show them to me," he urged.
"What about my chocolate? If it’s not a big box, don’t expect me to show you my gloves," Zhu Hui threatened him, extending her hand toward him to demand chocolate.
Seeing her demanding attitude, Yang Qianfan decided not to argue and handed over the chocolate he had prepared earlier. When Zhu Hui saw that it was indeed a large box, she nodded in satisfaction and smiled at him. Just as she was about to take out the gloves she had knitted for him from her backpack, Tang Hui happened to pass by.
"Hui, school’s out! Why haven’t you gone home yet?" Tang Hui asked cheerfully as he ran over to her.
"I... I’ll be home soon," Zhu Hui stammered, feeling embarrassed about having to tell him that she was going on a date with Yang Qianfan.
Noticing her flushed cheeks and the large box of chocolates along with the gloves in her hands, Tang Hui excitedly snatched the gloves from her. "Did you knit these yourself?"
"Y-yes!" Zhu Hui replied with a wry smile, glancing back at the sulking Yang Qianfan beside her.
"Hui, thank you! This is such a thoughtful birthday gift."
"Ah—birthday gift?" Zhu Hui suddenly remembered that today was indeed his birthday.
"Hui, your skills have really improved; you can knit gloves now!" Tang Hui exclaimed as he put on the gloves to see how they fit.
Meanwhile, Yang Qianfan watched in fury as this insufferable guy dared to wear the gloves that Zhu Hui had knitted for him. He felt like he had just swallowed a bomb and exploded with anger. He marched over and grabbed Tang Hui's shirt, glaring at him as if he could kill him with his eyes.
“What… what do you want to do?” Tang Hui looked puzzled at his fierce expression.
“I…”
Just as Yang Qianfan was about to snatch the gloves back from Tang Hui, Zhu Hui suddenly cleared her throat behind him and shook her head, signaling him not to take the gloves back. Although Yang Qianfan was angry, he decided to give Zhu Hui face and let it go. He turned around and, through gritted teeth, delivered his insincere birthday wish:
“Happy birthday to you, wishing you happiness ‘none’!” When he said ‘none,’ he deliberately lowered his tone a bit, making it sound like he was saying happiness ‘every’ instead.
“Th… thank you!” Tang Hui was terrified by his menacing look, sweating profusely.
“You damn guy, why did you have to be born on Valentine’s Day of all days?”
“That question is too complicated; it involves time, place, and people. I suggest you ask my mom instead.” After saying that, Tang Hui shook off his hand and dashed away wearing the gloves.
Seeing this, Zhu Hui couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Yang Qianfan felt infuriated by her mocking laughter and turned to glare at her fiercely, placing all the blame on her.
“Sigh! There’s nothing we can do; accidents are everywhere.” Zhu Hui said with a feigned look of sympathy, spreading her hands and shaking her head at him.
“Is that so?” Hearing her response, Yang Qianfan shot her a flirtatious glance and swaggered over to her, wearing a mischievous grin.
Zhu Hui noticed his exaggerated lewd smile and guessed he must be concocting some indecent plan to take advantage of her. She immediately wiped the smile off her face and took a step back defensively, keeping a safe distance from him. Cautiously, she asked, “What do you want?”
“I don’t want anything!” Yang Qianfan said with a gleeful expression as he slowly reached out towards her. Just as his hand was in front of her, he suddenly flipped his palm over, showing the inside of his hand and shouted loudly, “Give me back my chocolate!”
Zhu Hui was startled and quickly hid the chocolate behind her back, nervously repeating, “No way! No way! No way!” After saying that, she dashed away with the box of chocolate.
Seeing Zhu Hui daring to run away, Yang Qianfan didn’t back down either and chased after her. Although Zhu Hui usually excelled in sports, she was at a disadvantage due to her shorter legs compared to Yang Qianfan’s longer strides. She didn’t get far before she was caught by him.
“You’re still too green to compete with me in running,” Yang Qianfan said as he caught her while catching his breath proudly.
“What are you so proud of? I didn’t lose because I’m slower; it’s because my legs aren’t as long as yours. One step for you is equivalent to two for me. Even if I lost, it’s still an honorable defeat.”
“Alright, I’m not interested in winning or losing right now. All I know is that you owe me a pair of gloves. What are you going to do about it?” Yang Qianfan asked.
"Then what can I do? I'll get you a pair later."
"No, I want them now."
Zhu Hui sighed helplessly at his insistence on those gloves. "Sigh—there's really no way around it. Fine, I'll take the plunge today and win you a pair of gloves."
"Win a pair? How?"
"By fishing for goldfish at the Temple Fair! If I can catch ten goldfish, I can exchange them for a pair of gloves."
"Fishing for goldfish? Is that something they have at the Temple Fair?"
"Yes! There are lots of fun things at the Temple Fair, like guessing lantern riddles and playing marbles. Although they are all traditional games, they come with prizes. That's why I always go to the Temple Fair this time of year."
"Since there are prizes, let's hurry up and go!" Yang Qianfan exclaimed, excitedly pulling her along, eager to visit the Temple Fair.
