"One pinch isn't enough; I want to pinch too." At that moment, a male classmate followed suit and pinched Zhu Hui.
"No way! If you pinch me, I have to pinch back." After he pinched her, it seemed to spark something in the others, and soon everyone joined in, giving Zhu Hui playful pinches until she was left dazed.
Then, they brought out the birthday cake, snacks, and drinks they had prepared in advance, celebrating Zhu Hui's birthday as if it were a festival. They played and laughed together, casting aside the pressure of the upcoming college entrance exams, singing songs of youth and celebrating their time together. They continued their revelry until nightfall, even waking the stars with their noise before finally winding down.
Zhu Hui happily pushed the bicycle her classmates had gifted her. Just as she stepped out of the school gate, she heard someone calling her from behind. Turning around, she saw Yang Qianfan.
"It’s so late; why haven’t you gone home yet?" Zhu Hui asked, looking at him in confusion.
"Because... because..." Yang Qianfan's face turned red as he pulled out a gift from behind his back and handed it to her. "Happy Birthday!"
"Ah! You have a gift for me too!" Zhu Hui exclaimed excitedly as she took the present and prepared to unwrap it.
"Hey! Don’t unwrap it yet." Yang Qianfan said nervously, stopping her. "You can open it when you get home."
"Why not?" Zhu Hui asked, puzzled.
"For no particular reason; just wait until you get home."
"You didn’t do something weird inside it, did you?" Zhu Hui asked suspiciously, shaking the gift in her hands and tilting her ear to listen for any sounds coming from within.
"Alright, stop shaking it. It’s just a talking doll inside; is that okay?" Yang Qianfan replied impatiently.
"A talking doll? What does it say?"
"It speaks Chinese."
"No, I mean what does it actually say?"
"You really are clueless. It's not like I was going to say something like 'Happy Birthday' or anything," Yang Qianfan said, rolling his eyes at her. "I was trying to create some suspense, but you’ve ruined it. Ugh—so boring."
"Alright, thank you for your gift. I will definitely cherish this precious present," Zhu Hui reassured him.
"Hey, take a look at this," Yang Qianfan said, extending his arm to show her the watch on his wrist.
"Wow! What a beautiful watch! Did you just buy it?" Zhu Hui asked excitedly as she admired the timepiece.
"You... you really forgot about this watch?" he asked incredulously.
"What’s wrong with the watch?" Zhu Hui replied, confused.
"This watch was a gift from you on my birthday two years ago!"
"Oh! So it's that watch! I almost forgot about it," Zhu Hui said, looking at him with a bittersweet smile. She lowered her head and added, "I can’t believe you still have it after all this time."
"It was a gift from you, so of course I treasure it," Yang Qianfan said earnestly, flashing her a shy smile before asking, "What about yours?"
"W-what do you mean by 'yours'?" Zhu Hui feigned ignorance.
"Your ladies' Couple Watch," Yang Qianfan said, noticing her act and growing impatient.
"Stop being ridiculous! I... I don’t have any ladies' Couple Watch," Zhu Hui denied nervously.
"Don’t play dumb in front of me. Who doesn’t know that you bought a pair of Couple Watches back then? Come on, where’s your ladies' Couple Watch?"
"Stop being so self-important. I’m telling you, I never bought any ladies' Couple Watch," Zhu Hui insisted. Fearing he would press further, she turned and hurriedly pushed her brand-new bicycle, eager to leave.
"If you don’t remember where your ladies' Couple Watch went, then you’re not going anywhere," Yang Qianfan said stubbornly, blocking her path and preventing her from leaving.
"You are really annoying! If I say I don't have it, then I don't have it. Why can't you just believe me?"
"Stop whining! Where did that ladies' Couple Watch go?" Yang Qianfan shouted at her in frustration.
"Alright, alright, I'll tell you," Zhu Hui said, unable to resist him any longer. "I gave that watch to Jiang Xi as a birthday gift last year."
"You... what?" Yang Qianfan trembled with anger upon hearing that she had given the watch away.
"What do you want?" Zhu Hui felt a chill run down her spine as she saw his face turn pale with rage.
"Zhu Hui, I hate you!" Yang Qianfan yelled at her, and in his fury, he lifted his foot and kicked her brand-new bicycle hard, venting his frustration before turning around and storming off.
"You perverted Male Goat! Why did you kick my precious bike?" Zhu Hui shouted at his retreating figure. Seeing the black mark left by his kick on her bicycle, she quickly crouched down to wipe the dirt away, feeling heartbroken.
After returning home, she opened the gift that Yang Qianfan had given her and found that it was indeed a figurine as he had said. Just as she was feeling bored with the figurine, she accidentally pressed a button on its back. Suddenly, the figurine spoke—not with a "Happy Birthday," but instead said, "Zhu Hui, I like you. Will you be my girlfriend?"
Zhu Hui was taken aback to hear Yang Qianfan's voice coming from the figurine. After a moment of reflection, she realized why he had made this gift so mysterious; he had chosen such a cheesy way to confess his feelings to her. She hugged the figurine tightly, blushing as she smiled at it and said, "You're so bad; why should I agree to be your girlfriend?"
That night, she lay in bed holding the talking figurine, replaying Yang Qianfan's confession in her mind and drifting off into sweet dreams.
The next day after school, while Zhu Hui was cleaning the music classroom by herself, Yang Qianfan suddenly burst in and startled her.
"What are you doing? You can't just barge in without knocking!" Zhu Hui glared at him and complained.
Ignoring her complaints, Yang Qianfan rushed over to her and forcefully put a ladies' watch on her wrist, glaring fiercely.
"If you ever give this watch away again, I won't let you off easily."
Zhu Hui looked at the watch on her wrist and realized it was the same one she had given to Jiang Xi last year. Confused, she questioned him:
"How did you get this watch? Did you force Jiang Xi to give it to you?"
"What do you mean 'force'? I bought this watch from her for 450 bucks," Yang Qianfan frowned.
"How could that damn Jiang Xi casually sell the gift I gave her to someone else? And for such a high price!" Zhu Hui exclaimed, furious and ready to confront Jiang Xi.
"Come back, don’t go after her," Yang Qianfan pulled her back.
"But she—"
"Enough about her," Yang Qianfan interrupted, suddenly blushing deeply. He lowered his voice and asked, "Did you hear what I said about the figurine I gave you yesterday?"
"What did you say?" Zhu Hui pretended to be clueless at his question.
"I mean... those words!" Yang Qianfan urged, his face turning even redder.
"Oh—those words! I heard them," Zhu Hui feigned realization, acting nonchalant.
"Then do you have anything to say to me now that you've heard them?"
"What do you want me to say?"
"For example, something like 'I agree,' 'I'm willing,' or 'I accept'!" Yang Qianfan said shyly.
"What do you want me to agree to? To be your girlfriend?" Zhu Hui shot him a cold glance, laughing mockingly.
Seeing her disdainful expression, Yang Qianfan felt a surge of anger. He glared at her and retorted, "So what if I do?"
Zhu Hui, noticing his bold confession and arrogant attitude, couldn't help but feel her temper rising as she shot back at him:
"You think you're so fierce? Who would even want to be your girlfriend! If anyone in this world were to be liked by you, it would mean they've run out of luck for eight hundred lifetimes."
"What did you say? Say it again if you have the guts." Yang Qianfan was so enraged that his whole body trembled.
"The girl who gets liked by you will have the worst luck for eight hundred lifetimes. Luckily, Li Lingfei turned around in time; otherwise, she would surely suffer terribly under your tyranny," Zhu Hui pointed at him, affirming her words clearly and deliberately.
"Is that so?" Yang Qianfan suddenly burst into a strange laugh, stepping closer to her. He raised his hands and mimicked Li Long, pinching her hard in front of him. The sound of cracking bones echoed as he gritted his teeth and made exaggerated expressions at her. "Zhu Hui, I like you. Without you, my world would be dull and lifeless; Zhu Hui, I like you. Without you, my life would be stagnant; Zhu Hui, I like you. Without you, my existence would come to an end..."
"What... what are you trying to do? This is... so cheesy!" Zhu Hui was frightened and had no choice but to back away repeatedly as he closed in on her.
"Oh, it's cheesy, is it? I'm going to make it so cheesy it drives you crazy." Yang Qianfan pressed her against the wall, rendering her unable to move. With a fierce expression, he said, "Zhu Hui, listen carefully, I like you. Just wait for your eight hundred lifetimes of bad luck!" With that, he left her there in anger.
"Tch—what was that! Was he confessing to me? Why does it sound more like a threat?" Zhu Hui stared at his retreating figure, lost in thought as she muttered to herself.
