Yang Qianfan gradually lost consciousness as he sank into the river, but it felt as if his awareness lingered. It was as though he had fallen into a deep sleep and was dreaming. In his dream, he found himself at Lao Jiu's Tang Noodle Shop, having breakfast. However, instead of noodles, he was served a basket of Chive Dumplings. The dumplings tasted terrible, carrying an unpleasant odor as if they had gone bad after being left out for too long. Just as he was about to complain to Lao Jiu about the dumplings, a wave of sourness surged up from his stomach. Instinctively, he gagged and coughed a couple of times, which jolted him awake.
As he slowly opened his eyes, he saw a middle-aged man with a round face and unkempt beard staring intently at him. The man grinned widely upon noticing Yang Qianfan had awakened, revealing a piece of green chive leaf stuck between his shiny golden front teeth, swaying in the cold wind—a rather conspicuous sight.
"How did I end up here?" Yang Qianfan mumbled groggily.
Jiang Xi, seeing him awake, rushed over excitedly and slapped him on the shoulder.
"If it weren't for Xiong Laoshi saving you, you would have already reported to the King of Hell by now."
"Xiong Laoshi?" Yang Qianfan blinked in surprise, staring at the oddly unattractive man before him. "Xiong Laoshi, were you the one who saved me?"
Xiong Laoshi feigned seriousness and cleared his throat.
"Yes! Fortunately, teachers like me who teach physical education have learned emergency response techniques."
"What emergency response techniques?" Yang Qianfan asked anxiously.
"Rescue breathing!" Jiang Xi interjected impatiently, pushing Xiong Laoshi aside to answer.
"What? Rescue breathing?" Upon hearing those words, Yang Qianfan felt as if his fragile self-esteem had crumbled into dust. He couldn't suppress the nauseating stench of rotten chives rising from his stomach. He jumped up from the ground, feeling queasy enough to nearly vomit.
Just when he was on the verge of tears, a group of girls' shrill screams in the distance caught his attention.
"What are they doing? Could it be that they’re so happy about my rescue breathing that they're planning a memorial service for me?" Yang Qianfan covered his mouth and sadly asked Jiang Xi beside him.
“What memorial service? What are we mourning?” Jiang Xi asked, perplexed by his words.
“Mourning my pure and innocent first kiss!”
Seeing the pained expression on his face, which resembled that of a woman in feudal society who had lost her chastity before marriage, Jiang Xi couldn’t help but cover her mouth and laugh heartily.
“What are you laughing at? What are those crazy hens screaming about? Hurry up!” Yang Qianfan glared at her in frustration and asked again.
“The only person who could make all the girls at school scream like that is none other than that junior, Zi Songyu.”
“Did he win first place in the winter swimming competition?” Yang Qianfan asked indignantly, feeling quite resentful.
“First place? No, it’s just because he jumped into the river without hesitation to save Zhu Hui, which is why he’s now being adored by all those girls like a hero.”
“What? He… he saved Zhu Hui?” Yang Qianfan gasped, nearly choking on his words. He anxiously followed up, “Did he give Zhu Hui mouth-to-mouth resuscitation?”
“Zhu Hui isn’t as weak as you; she wouldn’t faint just from drinking a couple of sips of Han River water. Why would she need mouth-to-mouth?”
Hearing this, Yang Qianfan finally relaxed. After changing his clothes, he didn’t dare lift his head and returned to school with a dejected expression.
At school the next day, everyone was talking about the previous winter swimming competition. Naturally, the focus of the discussions centered on Song Yu’s heroic rescue and Xiong Laoshi giving Yang Qianfan mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. The former was praised extensively for being not only handsome but also brave, while the latter was met with teasing and ridicule, turning Yang Qianfan into a laughingstock for everyone.
Faced with the tidal wave of mockery, Yang Qianfan appeared unfazed, lost in thought as he stared at his right hand with a silly grin. After lunch, he was dragged by Zhang Ming and his group to the basketball court. After several rounds of play, he missed every shot and scored nothing. Those around him noticed something was off about him today and speculated whether he had been cursed.
As they rested on the stone steps beside the basketball court, Zhu Hui and Jiang Xi happened to pass by after finishing their lunch. Jiang Xi noticed Yang Qianfan still lost in thought, staring at his right hand and mumbling to himself in confusion:
"That idiot can't really have lost his mind, can he? I noticed something was off with him this morning; he kept smiling at his right hand. Could it be that he was really dazed by Xiong Laoshi's kiss yesterday?"
"That pervert," Zhu Hui thought, recognizing the dazed look on his face as a sign that his mind was filled with lewd thoughts, still reveling in the sensation of having sneakily touched her chest the day before. Angered by the events that had transpired in the water, Zhu Hui marched up to Yang Qianfan, and in front of everyone, she raised her hand and slapped him hard across the face. After angrily calling him "lewd," she turned on her heel and walked away.
The people around them were left speechless, staring in disbelief as they tried to make sense of what had just happened. They turned to Yang Qianfan and asked:
"Why did she hit you? Did you do something lewd to her?"
However, Yang Qianfan didn’t react much to Zhu Hui's sudden slap. He touched his reddened cheek and gazed dreamily at her retreating figure, muttering to himself:
"Though she's not very tall, she's developed quite nicely."
Zhu Hui, who hadn’t gone far, heard Yang Qianfan’s words and was instantly infuriated. She jumped up in anger, closed her eyes in frustration, and let out a couple of exasperated shouts before running away in embarrassment.
