Yang Qianfan was struck hard that morning, lost in thought and unable to bring himself to go anywhere. He remained at home until evening when Wang Yuhan returned from work, and he could no longer contain his emotions.
“Are you blind? How can you like someone like that?” Yang Qianfan shouted at him, his face pale and his anger raging like a Category 10 hurricane, fierce enough to destroy everything in its path.
Wang Yuhan merely smiled coldly at him, unfazed by the outburst. He turned and went to his room to grab some clothes, preparing to take a shower.
“That Dwarf Winter Melon is so ugly. Don’t you feel embarrassed being with her?” Yang Qianfan blocked the bathroom door, preventing him from entering.
“Zhu Hui isn’t pretty, but she’s not as hideous as you make her out to be,” Wang Yuhan replied casually.
“Isn’t she ugly? Her eyes look like they belong to some alien creature.”
“So what?”
“I want you to break up with her immediately.”
“And then what?” Wang Yuhan looked at him with a knowing expression, a cold smirk forming on his lips.
“Then… then… what comes next?” Yang Qianfan stuttered suddenly, lowering his head in guilt, unable to meet Wang Yuhan’s gaze.
“There’s no ‘then.’ Just stop blocking my way so I can take a shower.” Wang Yuhan pushed past him dismissively and entered the bathroom.
But Yang Qianfan was relentless, following him into the bathroom and shouting:
“You and that Dwarf Winter Melon are completely mismatched. I advise you to break up with her right away—don’t waste another minute.”
Wang Yuhan set down his clothes and turned back to him with an intrigued snort, his gaze sharp as if he were a bulldozer digging for hidden treasures buried deep within Yang Qianfan’s heart. He asked, “I find you very strange. Why do you insist that I break up with her?”
“Because… because we’re brothers, and I don’t want to see you become the subject of gossip,” Yang Qianfan replied.
“If no one gossips about you and me in this world, then who will?”
"You..." Yang Qianfan was so infuriated that he momentarily lost his words.
"Come on, do you really think I wouldn't know what you're thinking?"
"You... you know what I'm thinking?" Yang Qianfan was taken aback, his expression a mix of fear and surprise.
Seeing his reaction, Wang Yuhan smirked mockingly, not wanting to crush his spirit, but continued, "Why even come out? I appreciate your good intentions, really."
"Appreciation is useless; take action. Break up with her, do you hear me?" Yang Qianfan commanded furiously.
"Sorry, but I absolutely will not break up with her," Wang Yuhan declared resolutely, the determination on his face as unyielding as a rock.
"Why? What charm does that Dwarf Winter Melon have that makes you so devoted to her?"
"Because of her kindness and bravery. No other girl can compare to her," Wang Yuhan replied, taking a deep breath with a meaningful look. "My feelings for her are similar to how you feel about Li Lingfei. The difference is that you are attracted to Li Lingfei's looks, while I am drawn to Zhu Hui's inner qualities. As the saying goes, 'Different strokes for different folks.' You pursue your visual pleasure while I seek emotional solace. We both find what we want, so there's no need for you to interfere with my choices." With that, he pushed Yang Qianfan out of the bathroom, slammed the door shut, and started his shower.
Yang Qianfan stood outside the bathroom door, listening to the sound of water splashing inside. It felt as if a storm was raging in his heart; he was so distressed that he wished he could go to the underworld and become brothers with the King of Hell.
The next day, Yang Qianfan faked an illness and stayed home from school, lying in bed with a mind full of chaotic thoughts that gave him a headache. At noon, Li Lingfei heard he was sick and rushed over to see him. Finding him lying weakly in bed like someone suffering from malaria—too weak to speak—she looked at him with concern. She reached out and touched his forehead, asking anxiously, "If you're sick, why don't you go see a doctor?"
"What's the point?" Yang Qianfan replied coldly, turning away from her.
"If you don’t see a doctor, how can you get better?" Li Lingfei insisted urgently, trying to pull him out of bed to go see a doctor.
Unable to tolerate Li Lingfei's nagging any longer, Yang Qianfan sprang up from the bed and shook off her hand without hesitation. A wave of relief surged through him as he shouted angrily at her, "I won't go! You're so annoying!"
"Do you want to break up with me? Answer me!" Li Lingfei shouted back at him in frustration.
Faced with her fury, Yang Qianfan remained expressionless and silent, but inside he felt as if he were cutting into his own wrist in pain.
“I don’t understand what’s wrong with me. Why do you want to break up with me so cruelly?” Li Lingfei sobbed even harder.
Li Lingfei gazed deeply at him, her eyes wide and bright. The lower lip had been bitten deeply, leaving a crimson mark. Despite the pain in her heart, she forced herself to listen to every word Yang Qianfan said.
“I don’t know why I’ve been so irritable lately, always doing things I don’t want to see… I’m really sorry for how I’ve treated you,” Yang Qianfan said, his voice thick with emotion, his eyes reddening. Suddenly, he choked on his words, as if the frustration he had bottled up for so long was about to spill out.
“Is the next thing you’re going to say ‘let’s break up’?” Li Lingfei looked at him through tear-filled eyes, her voice trembling.
Yang Qianfan flinched, unable to face her tear-streaked face. He lowered his head, speechless and choked up.
Li Lingfei was stunned by his outburst. By the time she regained her composure, tears were already streaming down her cheeks uncontrollably. She had never seen Yang Qianfan lose his temper in front of her before, but now he seemed like a wild beast, mercilessly biting into her heart and leaving it bleeding.
Yet Yang Qianfan was a passionate young man who understood the fragility of beauty. How could he remain indifferent to Li Lingfei’s tears? The pleasure of the moment was quickly replaced by regret. He gently approached Li Lingfei, gazing at her for a long time. It felt as if he had a thousand words to say, but facing her tear-filled eyes left him speechless. After a moment of silence, he finally spoke again.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to snap at you just now.” He said sincerely, lifting his hand to gently wipe away her tears. “ Lingfei, you are truly beautiful—like a flawless piece of jade. Seeing you sad makes me feel guilty… I’m so afraid of hurting you. When I see the tears on your face, it feels like seeing a flaw on that beautiful jade, making me feel guilty and uneasy…”
