Zhu Hui was taken aback by Director Liu's question. Embarrassed, she forced a smile and quickly lowered her head, not daring to say another word.
"I really hope you kneel here a little longer," Director Liu said, a hint of resentment in her voice as she coldly huffed at Zhu Hui. "Go back to the classroom and attend your lessons! Otherwise, what if you actually become self-taught outside the classroom? All my thirty-some years of teaching would be for nothing."
Hearing this, Zhu Hui felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her, and she broke into a silly grin.
After the Dong Xiwen incident calmed down, Class 4 of the senior year finally returned to tranquility. Although Zhu Hui couldn't regain her official position, she found herself living a carefree life as an ordinary student. Whenever she had free time, she would stroll around the playground with Tang Hui, play basketball with Song Yu, or joke around with Yang Qianfan. Life was peaceful and pleasant.
On the weekend, as Zhu Hui returned from her job at KFC, dusk was settling in. The sun had lost its intensity and shrunk to a golden yolk, glowing softly as it allowed the clouds to absorb its brilliance. The willows by Moon Lake had turned yellow again, adding a heavier touch of desolation to the picturesque scenery. Walking along the edge of Moon Lake, Zhu Hui spotted Tang Hui sitting alone on the opposite shore, lost in thought with a gloomy expression. Seeing him like that made her want to sneak up and scare him. So, she tiptoed over quietly like a cat and covered his eyes with her hands, holding back her voice as she urged Tang Hui to guess who it was.
"Alright, stop messing around, Hui. I know it's you," Tang Hui said as he pulled her hands away from his eyes.
"Hey, I was just trying to have some fun! Why so serious?" Zhu Hui pouted and complained.
"I'm sorry; I'm just not in a good mood today."
"Not in a good mood?" Zhu Hui couldn't help but burst into laughter at his response. "I'm an expert at treating common ailments like bad moods! I can prescribe you a remedy, but it comes with a fee!"
Seeing her like that, Tang Hui smiled back at her, not wanting to ruin her cheerfulness.
"Hey, what’s bothering you so much?" Zhu Hui asked as she noticed his smile fade.
"Hui, I—" Tang Hui looked at her hesitantly, his face suddenly turning red.
"What’s wrong?"
"I… I’ve realized that I've fallen for a girl recently, but I don’t know how to confess my feelings to her."
"You’ve fallen for a girl?" Zhu Hui stared at him in shock but then felt her own cheeks heat up as she thought about how Tang Hui had chosen this moment to confess to her. "If you like this girl, you should tell her directly! How else will she know your feelings?"
"But what if I don’t know if she likes me back? What if she doesn’t like me?"
"Don't worry, with your great personality, how could she not like you?" Zhu Hui said shyly, lowering her head and waiting for Tang Hui to confess his feelings.
"Really? What if she rejects me on the spot? Wouldn't that mean we couldn't even be friends anymore?" Tang Hui asked, clearly anxious.
"You won't be rejected. You need to have confidence in yourself. In fact, that girl has been waiting for you to say this for a long time," Zhu Hui replied, feeling bashful as she lowered her head even further, her heart racing like a drum.
"How do you know she's been waiting for me to say this?"
"Oh dear!" Zhu Hui exclaimed, seeing his cluelessness. She suddenly lifted her head, both annoyed and embarrassed, and shouted at him, "It's a girl's intuition, okay?"
"That's true; after all, you all are girls."
"Exactly! So why are you still hesitating? Are you going to wait until the flowers wilt and the tea cools down before you finally speak up?"
Seeing her impatient expression made Tang Hui chuckle.
"Hui, you truly are my best friend; you treat my matters as if they were your own."
"Of course! This is also my lifelong concern; how can I not be nervous?"
"Your lifelong concern?" Tang Hui looked at her in confusion, his expression blank.
"You silly head! If you don't hurry up, I'm really going to leave!" Zhu Hui said, standing up and pretending to be angry, threatening to walk away.
"Okay, okay! I will! Is that good enough?" Tang Hui got up from the ground and grabbed her hand earnestly. "Hui, thank you. You really are my best friend."
"Apart from that... don't you have anything else you want to say to me?"
"Anything else? What else do you want me to say?"
“About that girl!”
“Got it, no need to rush me. I’ll go find her right now.” Tang Hui said, excitedly leaving Zhu Hui behind as he turned and ran off.
“Hey, you—” Zhu Hui couldn’t help but call out after him.
“What else is there?” Tang Hui asked, confused, looking back.
“Nothing… nothing at all.” Zhu Hui gazed at him, feeling desolate inside. She trembled as she said, “I wish… I wish you good luck!”
“Thank you! Hui, you will always be my best friend.” Tang Hui replied confidently and walked away, leaving Zhu Hui standing there in a daze, as if frozen in place. Watching Tang Hui’s retreating figure, her heart felt as though it had fallen into a dark abyss, shattering with a loud thud.
“Searching and seeking, cold and desolate, sorrowful and miserable; during the time when warmth is fleeting and the chill lingers, it’s hardest to find peace. After a few heartbreaks, how can one endure…” At that moment, a gust of cold wind swept by, causing her to shiver involuntarily. She continued softly, “The late wind comes swiftly.”
Back home, she lost herself once again. She didn’t eat or bathe, collapsing onto her bed to sleep. But every time she thought of Tang Hui’s infuriating smile, sleep eluded her.
“Hmph—what’s so great about you? I don’t like you at all! Lowering my standards would be the most shameful downfall. My future prince charming will be a hundred times, a thousand times, a million times more handsome than you…” Zhu Hui jumped up from her bed, raising her hands in excitement with a clang. But soon enough, she deflated like a punctured balloon and flopped back into her blankets, muttering to herself, “If I don’t like him, why does my heart hurt so much?” Hiding under the covers, the more she thought about it, the more painful it became. Eventually, she couldn’t hold back any longer and burst into tears under the blankets, crying until dawn.
The next day at school, her swollen eyes made everything look gray and desolate as if it were the end of the world. Even when Yang Qianfan came over to tease her, she ignored him completely and wore a lifeless expression.
“Hey, you’re acting really strange today! Why aren’t you talking?” Yang Qianfan asked curiously when he saw her displeasure.
“No way! I’m just as chatty as usual,” she replied dismissively.
“This is what you call chatty? You won’t even banter with me.”
“If you want to joke around, go find someone else! I’m not in the mood today.” Zhu Hui slouched over with a hunched back, looking as dejected as an elderly man who had been mistreated. She sat on the stone steps beside the school playground with no energy.
“What happened to you this time?” Yang Qianfan asked curiously as he sat down beside her.
“I’m fine, I just want to find my Prince Charming quickly and have a passionate romance with him,” Zhu Hui sighed softly, suddenly asking, “Yang Qianfan, what does it feel like to be in love with Li Lingfei?”
“Ah—” Yang Qianfan stared at her, taken aback by her unexpected question.
“Don’t look at me like that. I really want to be in love.”
“Why do you suddenly want to be in love?”
“Because Hui is in a relationship now, and I can’t let him think less of me, so I want to fall in love too.”
“What? You want to be in love just for that reason?”
“Yes!”
“Love shouldn’t be impulsive; otherwise, you’ll definitely regret it later,” Yang Qianfan said empathetically.
“Is that so? But I really want to be in love right now.” Zhu Hui suddenly choked up.
Seeing her sad expression made Yang Qianfan’s heart ache.
“Zhu Hui, does it really hurt you this much that he’s dating someone else?”
“If I said it didn’t hurt, I’d be lying,” Zhu Hui replied, turning to him with a sorrowful smile. “I don’t know why, but whenever I think of him now, my heart hurts so much, like being pricked by needles.”
“Zhu Hui, do you… really like him that much?” Yang Qianfan asked, feeling an overwhelming urge to cry inside.
Hesitating for a moment at his question, Zhu Hui nodded and wiped away her tears.
“Actually… there’s a guy who has always liked you.”
"I know, but I just don't like him."
"Do you know who this boy who likes you is?"
"Who else could it be? It's that guy who keeps shouting that he likes me, Song Yu."
"My boy isn't him."
"Not him? Then who could it be?"
"Think about who else around you treats you the best," Yang Qianfan tried to remind her.
"The one who treats me the best? Oh—now I know who you're talking about! It's Wang Yuhan, right?" Zhu Hui suddenly realized and broke into a silly grin. "Wang Yuhan likes me. Why hasn't he told me sooner? Hmm! Wang Yuhan is worth considering; he's quite handsome and charming. I think he's much better than Tang Hui."
"My person isn't Wang Yuhan."
"If it's not Wang Yuhan, then it must be Luo Minggang. Yes, your person must be Luo Minggang! He confessed to me before, but I rejected him at that time. Now I regret it so much!" Zhu Hui sighed, thinking of Luo Minggang with a hint of regret.
Yang Qianfan saw that she had thought of everyone but him and was so frustrated that he couldn't help but shout at her, "I... my person is neither Wang Yuhan nor Luo Minggang! Are you blind? Can't you see me standing right here?"
"So close? You can't be talking about yourself! If it's you, I'd rather become a nun."
"What? Am I that bad?" Yang Qianfan exploded in anger.
"You're not bad, but I don't want to carry the blame of stealing Li Lingfei's boyfriend," Zhu Hui joked.
Although Zhu Hui mentioned Li Lingfei as a joke, Yang Qianfan was momentarily speechless, standing there in a daze for quite a while.
Seeing him lost in thought and silent, Zhu Hui curiously asked:
“Hey, what’s wrong with you? You still haven’t answered the question I asked earlier!”
“What… what question?”
“What does it feel like to be in a relationship with Li Lingfei?”
Yang Qianfan looked at her foolish expression and could no longer endure it. He erupted, shouting at her, “Fine, I’ll tell you! The feeling of being in love with her can be summed up in one word: ‘awesome.’ It’s an exhilarating kind of awesome!”
“Exhilarating? I see. It seems your love is indeed magnificent,” Zhu Hui nodded thoughtfully, smiling slightly at him. “I envy you both so much. I really hope that my future love can be as great as yours.”
“Zhu Hui, if there were only one nun left in this world, it would definitely be you,” Yang Qianfan pointed at her, gritting his teeth in anger.
“What do you mean by that?”
“I curse you! I curse your future love to always be filled with heartbreak!” With that, Yang Qianfan stormed off in a huff.
“You… you’re so mean! I wish you well, and you… you actually curse me!” Zhu Hui pointed at herself, nearly fainting from anger.
