Not long after that group of Beijingers left, the school held a preliminary examination. Today was the day to collect the report cards, and as the class monitor, Zhu Huijin stood out particularly. With the report cards in her hands, even those classmates who usually found her displeasing couldn't help but feel a bit intimidated by her presence.
During the first class of the morning, she arrived a bit late because she had gone to the administration office to pick up the report cards. As soon as she entered the classroom, she distributed the report cards to each student. Then, she rushed to the podium and said sternly, "Everyone did quite well this time; only one student failed. I hope that student will work hard to improve next time. As for the ranking list that everyone is concerned about..." She paused for a moment, holding up a piece of paper before continuing, "I know everyone is interested in how they ranked because it directly affects your standing in school. To respect everyone's wishes, I will simply announce the names of the top ten students as encouragement." With that, she began to read aloud.
"First place: Zhu Hui, 71 points; second place: Wan Shuhui, 69 points; third place: Wang Kun, 56 points; fourth place: Cheng Jing, 54 points..."
After quickly finishing her announcement, she closed the ranking list and asked her classmates seated below, "Does anyone have a lighter they can lend me?"
Her question was met with silence; everyone exchanged glances but no one dared to respond.
"What’s going on? We have so many boys in our class who love to smoke, yet not a single one brought a lighter today? What a coincidence!" Zhu Hui observed the boys below remaining unmoved and couldn't help but smirk.
At that moment, Ma Yan, the only Northeasterner in class, stepped up without hesitation and tossed his lighter to Zhu Hui. Seeing Ma Yan with a lighter made Yu Hong rush to the front of the podium excitedly, pointing at him and exclaiming, "Goodness! You have some nerve smoking at school!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Zhu Hui couldn't help but impatiently retort from the podium:
"Teacher, haven't you heard the saying 'Do not impose on others what you do not desire yourself'? I believe you have a lighter on you too!"
Yu Hong turned red with embarrassment from her reprimand and retreated to the side in silence.
Zhu Hui pressed down on the lighter and burned the ranking list right there in front of everyone.
The classmates below erupted into cheers at this scene, applauding Zhu Hui for respecting everyone's privacy.
Unfortunately, their excitement did not last long. By the time the third period math class began, they were doused with a bucket of cold water by Director Liu, leaving them feeling as if they were in the depths of winter. The first thing Director Liu did upon entering the classroom was to publicly announce each student's scores and rankings. This left those who had not performed well in the exam feeling frustrated and their spirits plummeted.
Director Liu was the head of the mathematics department at Nanhua High School. With her extensive teaching experience, she held significant prestige within the school. She had been recognized multiple times as a leading educator at the provincial, municipal, and district levels, earning titles such as provincial and municipal special-grade teacher and model worker. Throughout her thirty years of teaching, her rigorous style had produced many students who successfully entered top-tier universities. Zhu Hui was currently one of her key students, which meant expectations for her were quite high. However, Zhu Hui's performance in this recent assessment did not meet Director Liu's standards, leading to a harsh critique in front of the entire class.
Nonetheless, Zhu Hui was a good student; although Director Liu's words were severe, they were intended to motivate her to strive for better results next time. Thus, when she scolded Zhu Hui, it appeared to others more like praise than reprimand. In stark contrast, the only girl in the class who failed the exam was not so fortunate. Director Liu's criticism of her could only be described as a "personal attack."
With poor grades and lacking in appearance, Director Liu bluntly advised her that once she entered society, even working as a hostess would be out of reach due to her looks. She urged the girl's father to take her home immediately and suggested that she should find someone to marry instead, so she wouldn't starve after leaving school.
