After returning home, a myriad of worries surged through him like a flock of hungry crows, overwhelming his heart. He dialed her number repeatedly, but she refused to answer. Eventually, she turned off her phone altogether.
Half a month passed, and Xiao Yang had not reached out to him. Until one sunny Sunday morning, Tang Hui, as usual, carried his backpack to school for tutoring. Just as he passed by Red Square, he encountered Xiao Yang. She had clearly lost a lot of weight in the past two weeks; the once graceful figure was now reduced to skin and bones.
"Where have you been lately? Do you have any idea how worried I've been about you?" Tang Hui rushed up to her, questioning her with palpable concern.
Xiao Yang looked at him without saying a word, her eyes brimming with tears that sparkled with a radiant light. After a moment of contemplation, she impulsively grabbed his hand and ran forward, leading him to the unforgettable alley where his left hand had been injured.
"What do you want to bring me here for?" Tang Hui asked as he shook off her grip.
Xiao Yang turned back, gazing at him through tear-filled eyes for what felt like an eternity. An overwhelming sense of regret poured from her clear gaze. She picked up a metal rod that she had prepared earlier from the corner and handed it to Tang Hui while sobbing, "I've been in so much pain during this time. The only way I can free myself from this suffering is to receive the retribution I deserve. So please help me—break my left hand too, okay?" Xiao Yang said earnestly, closing her eyes and extending her hand towards Tang Hui, ready to face her punishment.
Seeing her like this made Tang Hui furious; he threw the metal rod far away and exclaimed angrily, "What good will it do to break your left hand? Is there any chance my left hand will miraculously heal?"
"Do I have any other choice but to atone for my sins this way?" Xiao Yang couldn't help but shout at him in despair, crying heart-wrenchingly.
"You do—" Tang Hui became even more agitated. "If you want to atone for your sins, why not choose a more practical way? What benefit is there for me if you break your left hand?"
"Then tell me what I should do for you to be satisfied and forgive me."
"Fine—I’ll tell you. What I want is for you to realize that I’ve already forgiven you long ago. But now you're just giving up on yourself. Do you know how heartbroken and guilty I feel seeing you like this?"
"You’re being ridiculous. It was me who broke your left hand; why should you feel guilty?"
"Because I consider you a friend. When I see my friend feeling guilty and suffering because of me, do you think I would be happy and secretly rejoice?"
Hearing his sincere words, Xiao Yang was so moved that she collapsed in front of him, crying as she confessed, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..."
"Don't do this, get up quickly. I have really forgiven you. Why won't you believe me?" Tang Hui hurriedly helped her up from the ground.
Faced with his generosity, Xiao Yang's sobs intensified. She gazed deeply at him and earnestly said, "Could you please close your eyes, just for a moment?"
Although Tang Hui didn't understand her intention, he complied with her request and closed his eyes.
Xiao Yang lowered her head, looking apologetically at his left hand. Cautiously, she took his left hand in hers and couldn't help but lift it to her cheek. Tears of regret flowed freely from Tang Hui's hand, unreservedly seeping into his heart. Tang Hui couldn't help but open his eyes, witnessing her actions that stirred his emotions. He longed to rush forward and hold her tightly, never wanting to let go.
Seeing that he had opened his eyes, Xiao Yang felt a bit embarrassed. She quickly released his left hand, her face flushed as she turned away from him and stammered, "Don't worry, I... I didn't mean to cling to you like this. So... there's no need for you to be so surprised or so tense."
"Xiao Yang—" Tang Hui couldn't help but softly call her name.
"What... what is it?"
"If I wanted your entire life to compensate for my left hand, would you be willing?"
"I... I'm not that serious. It's getting late; you should go to school now. Let's meet again later!" With her back turned to him, Xiao Yang felt too self-conscious to look back even once. Inside, she felt as if her heart was being twisted by a knife. The awkwardness of the moment made it unbearable, so she simply took a step forward and ran away.
